文章大意:这是一篇应用文。邮件介绍了俄亥俄州第一学校一份从幼儿园到12年级的调研报告。
From: Ohio First School Board info@ofsb.edu>
TO: Educational Staff
Re: School Choices 2023-24
Date: April 20,2024
Dear Staff,

We have finally completed our report, analyzing school choice data so that we can plan for the future. Surveys were sent to all the parents/guardians of students in our schools, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We heard from a good percentage of families — 89% of them responded. It is important to note that a result like this means that our families are really invested in education and want to improve the system.

I’ve included one chart from the report. The rest of it is available on our website. There is nothing further you need to do, other than to look at the charts if you want to.

A committee has already been formed to figure out what to do with the data we now have. This committee includes board trustees, the chair of the school board, and several staff from the head office, as well as principals and teachers from both elementary and secondary schools.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Colleen So

Chair, Ohio First School Board

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何在新的一年设定合理的跑步目标,以保持跑步的动力和积极性。

I can’t leave my house because there’s 45 cm of snow on the ground, I’ve had some time to think about my running goals for the coming year. Setting running goals is a great way to stay motivated to run, and the start of a new year is the perfect time to think about what you want to achieve. Here are some tips for setting reasonable goals:

Choose practical goals. Never set a goal that you can’t achieve. For example, you’re not going to cover 5 km in 25 minutes with your best personal record being 35 minutes. Your chances of achieving your goals will be much better if they’re practical.

Don’t take on too much. If you have too many goals, you’ll burn yourself out and may not achieve any of them, leaving you feeling disappointed and unsuccessful. Instead, just focus on a few key goals and the steps you need to take to reach them.

Set small, easy goals. If you have a great goal, make sure that you have small, easy goals along the way, so that they can help you make progress and prevent you from getting frustrated. If your goal is to complete a 10K, first try to run a 3K or 5K, and then 8K every time. An added advantage of setting these small, easy goals is that even if you don’t meet your final goal at last, you’ll still achieve other success along the way.

Pick some fun goals, too. Not all your running goals have to be performance-related. Come up with some creative goals, such as running a race on a holiday, running a race for charity, reading a book about running, and making some new friends while running. Non-performance related goals can keep you from feeling unsuccessful even if you give up some of your other goals.

4. Why does the author present this passage?
A.To give advice on setting running goals.
B.To inform readers of the tips of running.
C.To follow some ways of keeping healthy.
D.To voice subjective opinions on running.
5. What does the example in Paragraph 2 function?
A.To show we shouldn’t choose unrealistic goals.
B.To prove we can’t run 5K meters in 20 minutes.
C.To introduce hard goals lead to better results.
D.To explain running long is bad for our health.
6. How is the passage developed?
A.By reasoning.B.By listing.C.By arguing.D.By classifying.
7. Which opinion does the author highlight?
A.More difficult goals will lead to more improvement.
B.The degree of success relies on the amount of goals.
C.Small, easy goals would make us sense successful.
D.Non-performance-related goals lower running plans.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道,主要讲述了Yang Zhongkai和他的团队如何利用腾讯云开发的人工智能技术,准确地识别和注册树木,以便更好地保护古树。

During Yang Zhongkai’s early years, a 500-year-old majestic ginkgo tree that did not sprout leaves for two to three years at a stretch used to be a daily sight for him on his way to and from high school. Since villagers widely regarded the tree as having the power to make their wishes come true, they used to kneel down in front of the “lucky” tree and burn offerings under it, which led to prolonged heat exposure at its roots, stunting its growth.

“Millions of such old trees are in urgent need of protection given their importance as vital biological resources and symbols of ecological civilization,” said Yang, who started the team — Zhiyue — dedicated to protecting ancient trees.“But the recording and management of ancient and famous trees nationwide commonly rely on Excel spreadsheets (电子表格), which present issues such as information silos, lack of real-time updates and incomplete content,” he said.

However, things have changed of late. Yang and his team now use the artificial intelligence technology developed by Tencent Cloud to identify and register trees accurately based on individual traits and GPS tracking. “With the acceleration of a new generation of technological revolution and industrial transformation, new technologies bring more excitement to the protection of ancient trees.” Yang said. “We can now collect data on the trees’ growth, health and environment in real time, which helps us make informed decisions on how to better protect them.”

“In addition to applying cutting-edge technologies such as AI and large models to assist in the development of traditional industries, the company also makes great efforts to promote the development of charitable causes through technological and platform advantages, “Wu Yunsheng said, vice-president of Tencent Cloud, adding that“the power of technology can change the world”.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了英国计划通过新法律,对未能有效保护儿童在线安全的科技公司高管处以最高两年监禁。修正案已获40名保守党议员支持,预计将在2023年1月17日投票。

Technology bosses who fail to protect children online face up to two years in prison after 40 Tory MPs (保守党议员) backed plans for a new law.

With great support for an amendment (修正案) to the Online Safety Bill from a few figures of authority, which would enable senior managers to be put to prison if they willfully or neglectfully fail to carry out their duties to children, the MPs are forcing Downing Street to take the amendment seriously. Similar laws were passed in Ireland last month.

At present, the bill has criminal sanctions (制裁) for managers — but only if they fail to cooperate with Ofcom, the regulator — and fines of up to 10 percent of a company’s global income for failures to protect children online. MPs and campaigners believe these are not a serious enough deterrent to protect children online or to prevent a repeat of the Molly Russell tragedy. Under the bill,a company should ensure children do not encounter unhealthy content promoting self-harm, eating disorders and suicide. The companies must use technology to identify the age of people using the platform. The measure is due to be voted on at report stage on Jan.17th 2023, after which the process of making and passing laws will move on to the Lords.

However, Monica Horten, the policy manager at Open Rights Group, which defends human rights online, warned:“Does this turn Britain into an powerful state? One that would put people in prison, not for what they’ve written but for what other people are writing and other people’s misuse of the system. I think that for parliament (议会) to be just nodding this through with no debate would be morally wrong and deserving criticism.”

The government said,“Our aim is to hold to account social media platforms for harmful content, while also ensuring the UK remains a great place to invest and grow a tech business. We are confident we can achieve both of these things.

12. What can we know about the new law?
A.Up to 10 percent of a company’s global income will be fined for failures soon.
B.Senior managers could face a serious sanction once the law comes into effect.
C.The amendment to the Online Safety Bill has gained support from all people.
D.Similar laws were passed in Ireland last month and will be passed in Britain.
13. Which word could replace “deterrent” in Para.3?
A.Money.B.Blow.C.Fine.D.Failure.
14. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Parliament will face severe criticism for nodding the new law.
B.This new law would turn Britain into a powerful state eventually.
C.Molly Russell was a sufferer exposed to unsafe online environment.
D.The government approves of the amendment unconditionally.
15. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Opinions on a New Law Protecting Children Online
B.The UK Aiming to Punish Some Technology Bosses
C.An Amendment Support to the Online Safety Bill
D.Prison Threat for Online Harm to Children Since

One day my mom and I read a story on a magazine called Humane Society News. A wild dog named Solo died for lack of medical care after he was ill. I knew how sad the story was because my own dog, Kela, had recently died. My world had ended when I lost Kela. She had been my best friend since I could remember. The article continued to tell about wildlife rehabilitators. They nursed the sick animals back to health, but as more and more animals were rescued, the medical expense became a big burden for them. I immediately determined to do something for them. I may be a kid, but why can’t I do a fund-raiser to help save more dogs?

My mom thought it was hard for an eleven-year-old girl to raise, but she told me to go ahead and try it anyway. I realized that I needed a name for the fund-raiser and thought since I was trying to protect dogs’ life, I would call my program Help Dogs. I decided that pet stores would be really good places to go with donation boxes and Help Dogs flyers (传单). I used little green Chinese take-out boxes, decorated with a picture of Tiko, one of the dogs I chose to help, and me. I wrote on each box “Help protect the life of dogs by donating a dollar”. I thought my actions might not raise much money for the dogs, but they can at least increase people’s awareness of wild animals protection.

One afternoon, after all the boxes had been distributed throughout our community, I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen one of my flyers. The reporter decided to do an article about Help Dogs. After the article came out, I waited for a few days before checking to see if there were any donations.
