Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer (征服) Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.
In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.
For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.
The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.

There are a few benefits to users from the cloud besides giving you peace of mind if you lose your phone. You can access your data anytime, anywhere if you’re connected to the Internet. And you don’t have to worry about using up all of the storage on your hard drive, meaning you might not have to pay as much for a device that comes with a ton of storage.
You’ve probably heard of the two biggest names in the market, Amazon Web Services, known as AWS, and Microsoft Azure, IBM, Google and Alibaba are also big players when it comes to providing cloud services.
Many cloud services are based on a subscription pricing model. That means users pay, for example, a monthly fee for cloud services and they can scale up or down as needed. And cloud providers are cashing in. AWS takes up about 12 percent of Amazon’s quarterly sales, but it makes more than half of the company’s operating income.
Before we get too excited about the cloud, let’s take a step back and look at some of the risks. One obvious concern, if all of our data is online, what happens when the Internet goes down? That’s what happened in 2013 when an AWS power cut took down Instagram, Vine and Airbub.
Hacker attacks are another big risk with research showing around one-fifth of all files in the cloud contain sensitive data.
Finally, it can be difficult for consumers and businesses to switch between different cloud companies. I might have a hard time syncing my iCloud and Google Drive accounts. That can give some big companies that are already making big money on the cloud a lot of power over our data.
12. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “access” in Paragraph 1?A.Get. | B.Show. | C.Understand. | D.Enter. |
A.Instagram. | B.Alibaba. | C.Airbub. | D.Vine. |
A.Cloud providers offer services at their own cost. |
B.All the cloud services must be ordered ahead of time. |
C.AWS gains over 50%of Amazon’s operating income. |
D.Customers must pay a regular fixed fee for cloud services. |
A.what the cloud is | B.how the cloud works |
C.the advantage over disadvantage of the cloud | D.the advantage and disadvantage of the cloud |

That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.
At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey little girl, you want to eat a bowl?”
“But … but I do not carry money …” I shyly replied.
“Okay, I’ll treat you.” the seller said, “come in, I will cook you a bowl.”
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
“What is it?” He asked.
“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel (残忍的)!!”
The seller sighed, “Girl, why did you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?”
I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.
