A working model of the yet-unnamed device was presented to the public this week during the yearly Google I/O developer conference. Google did not say when the glasses might go on sale to the public.
The first Google Glass device included a wearable camera that could film what the wearers saw. That caused widespread privacy concerns. The camera element also gave Google Glass a kind of science-fiction look. The latest device looks more similar to traditional glasses.
A brief demonstration of the new eyeglasses described its translation ability, but did not provide additional details. The company also did not say whether the new device would be equipped with a camera. A demonstration explained that a person, wearing the glasses and talking with someone who speaks a different language, can see the spoken words in their own language. The description showed translations involving English, Mandarin, Spanish and American Sign Language.
The new device is one of several products shared at the conference that are currently in development. The company says the products aim to better connect Google services with activities happening in the real world. This includes company offerings for searching and viewing maps, as well as other services using the latest developments in artificial intelligence.
Eddie Chung, a director of product management at Google, spoke to developers about the new eyeglasses. “What we’re working on is technology that enables us to break down language barriers, taking years of research in Google Translate and bringing that to glasses,” he said.

It shouldn’t even be a subject. ” We’re choosing subjects for our A-level taster day at school. I see the raised eyebrows (眉毛) when I explain two of my GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) choices are dance and drama(戏剧).
I was told by advisers that dance and drama wouldn’t help me to get a suitable career. My friends told me I’d get bored of dance and switch to science within the first month.
But taking GCSE dance was the best decision I ever made. Dance gives me something to pour my head and heart into. It gives me a feeling of belonging, creativity, security and freedom.
The education secretary Nicky Morgan has put emphasis on (强调) science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), saying that students who focus on the arts risk their careers. Stopping young people from expressing themselves at such a young age is not doing them any favours. Perhaps Nicky Morgan has forgotten to open the door of having a drive to study that subject day in, day out. It shouldn’t matter what that subject is.
I don’t doubt the influence that STEM subjects can have on the people that love them. But to force children into one field is cruel. As much as I try, I’m not good at and don’t love physics, biology or maths. I don’t want a career in these areas.
There has been a decrease in the number of state schools offering arts subjects taught by specialist teachers. I can’t even imagine how it feels to be told that you don't teach a “real subject” by an 8-year-old boy.
To the teachers, the parents, the government I say: Let children make their own decisions. Let them live in the present. Let them have a real, unlimited education.

【推荐3】Frequently Asked Questions about Assessment
Does it matter if my coursework is too long or too short?
The word count for each piece of coursework should be provided on the title page. IOE allows a 10% margin(差额)on the word limit set for the coursework. For example, if the word limit is 5, 000 words, you can submit an assessment of between 4, 500 and 5, 500 words. Note that if your work exceeds (超出)the 10% margin, it will automatically fail.
When is the deadline for coursework assignments?
Final deadlines for coursework submissions are normally 2 calendar moths after the end of term in which the module runs. Coursework deadlines will be published on your programme webpage at the start of the academic year. The deadline for reports is normally the first working day in September. Note that you MUST submit your coursework by the deadline and that failure to do so in automatic fail.
When will I receive the grade and feedback for my coursework?
Your coursework and report are independently marked by two members of staff. Once the markers have agreed a grade, you will be informed of your results by the programme administrator. We aim to complete this process within 4 weeks of the submission deadline. Feedback and grades are not guaranteed within 4 weeks for extended, delayed, or resubmitted coursework. In special circumstances, you may apply for additional time to complete your coursework but must submit the evidence proving you are impacted by unforeseen factors. The time should be not later than two weeks before the original deadline.
If you are in any doubt about the assessment, please contact the programme administrator.
1. What results in an automatic fail?A.Exceeding the word limit. |
B.Not providing the word count. |
C.Missing the coursework deadline. |
D.Not publishing the coursework. |
A.Consult the programme administrator. |
B.Submit evidence to support your case. |
C.Revise your coursework based on the feedback. |

One example of AI is driverless cars. They are already on California roads, so it is not too soon to ask whether we can program a machine to act ethically. As driverless cars improve, they will save lives. They will make fewer mistakes than human drivers do. Sometimes, however, they will face a choice between lives. Should the cars be programmed to make a sudden turn to avoid hitting a child? What if the only risk is damage to the car itself not to the passengers?
Perhaps there will be lessons to learn from driverless cars, but they are not super-intelligent beings. Teaching ethics to a machine even more intelligent than we are will be the bigger challenge.
About the same time as AlphaGo’s victory, Microsoft’s ‘chatbot’ took a bad turn. The software, named Taylor, was designed to answer messages from people aged 18-24. Taylor was supposed to be able to learn from the messages she received. She was designed to slowly improve her ability to handle conversations, but some people were teaching Taylor racist ideas. When she started saying nice things about Hitler, Microsoft turned her off and deleted her ugliest messages.
AlphaGo’s victory and Taylor’s defeat happened at about the same time. This should be a warning to us. It is one thing to use AI within a game with clear rules and clear goals. It is something very different to use AI in the real world.
Eric Schmidt is one of the bosses of Google, which owns AlphoGo. He thinks AI will be positive for humans. He said people will be the winner, whatever the outcome. Advances in AI will make human beings smarter, more able and “just better human beings.”

A.She could not tell good from bad. |

【推荐3】Wouldn’t it be great if you could correct your eyesight, especially nearsightedness, and reduce your dependence on glasses and needn’t have eye surgery? The solution is called orthokeratology, or ortho-k (角膜塑形镜).
What is ortho-k?
Orthokeratology( ortho- k)is the fitting of specially designed contact lenses (隐形眼镜) that you wear overnight while you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your cornea (角膜) so you can see clearly the following day after you remove the lenses when you wake up.
How long does the ortho-k effect last?
You should be able to see acceptably well without glasses or contact lenses for a day or two, sometimes longer. For best results, one should wear the ortho- k lenses every might.
Who are good candidates for ortho-k?
Most people with mild to average nearsightedness are good candidates for ortho-k. Because the cornmeal reshaping effect is temporary, little risk is involved, and you can discontinue wearing the lenses at any time. Children and young adults who want to be gases-free but are too young for eye surgery or are afraid of taking the surgery often are good candidates for ortho-k. People who participate in contact sports or work in dusty environments that can have problems for contact lens wear also can be good candidates.
How much does ortho-k cost?
Costs also can vary based on the region of the country and the type of practice where you have the procedure performed. Ortho-k prices in the US generally range from $1, 000 to $2, 000 But particularly difficult cases of ortho-k can cost as much as $4.000.
There are additional costs for lens care solutions and following up exams, which can total about $300 to $ 500 per year.
Finally, keep in mind that, as with all contact lenses, there are some possible side effects of wearing ortho-k lenses. Ask your eye doctor for details.
1. According to the passage, which way is introduced to correct eyesight?A.Performing an operation of the cornea. |
B.Applying contact lenses in the daytime. |
C.Fitting proper glasses during the night. |
D.Wearing especially designed contact lenses. |
A.You have to wear ortho-k day and night to ensure good results. |
B.Ortho-k is a good choice for a man with average nearsightedness. |
C.The cast of ortho-k in the city is higher than that in the countryside. |
D.There is no need for people to worry about the side effects of ortho-k. |
