“A lie can travel half way around the world before the truth can put its bots on.” That quote is attributed to Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake(假的)news”, lies spread even faster than the truth is having trouble finding its boots.

To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors(谣言), half-truths and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-old worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to distinguish fact from opinion. A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell real news from fake news. In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.

Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice. They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be skeptical of online information.

Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more credible sources of information. Reporters are professionally trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be credible? Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice? Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to confirm the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.

2. What will always happen to young people with news around?
A.They prefer to real news story.
B.They are easily taken in by fake news.

文章大意:本文是说明文。讲述了现在越来越多精明的中国年轻人正在摒弃消费主义,过着越来越节俭的生活。

【推荐1】A penny saved is a penny earned. And more and more benny-wise young Chinese are abandoning consumerism by leading an increasingly frugal (节俭的) life by developing anti-consumerism concepts.

According to a survey by JD.com, nearly 50% of respondents would use all means to save money and more than 30% plan to become deal-hunters to fit in their budgets. More than 80% of Generation Z Chinese spend less than 5,000 yuan ($737) a month. When shopping, they care the most about practicability, personal preference and price, instead of brands, popularity and brand spokesmen.

And more than 600,000 users have joined a group named Frenzied Money Savers on Douban, a popular social media platform, where members share sometimes extreme ideas, tips, books and everything to save hard-earned money. For instance, some recommended uninstalling shopping apps such as Taobao, Meituan and Pinduoduo and installing it each time you really need to buy something so as to hold back the urge to spend. And milk tea, coffee and takeouts are strongly opposed by many.

Chinese have long established and valued the saving culture with the country’s household savings rate leading the world. Young Chinese who are born in a relatively prosperous and abundant society have learned to get rid of the addiction to consumerism and use money in a more sensible and wiser way, which could help create a more healthy and upbeat social vibe (社会风气), besides reducing the huge waste and damages to the environment caused by over consumption.

Just as the American writer Theodore Thornton said, the habit of saving is itself an education. To save and spend wisely are lessons young people all over the world have to learn.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了人们觉得寻求帮助很难的原因。

【推荐2】Asking for help is hard, but others want to help more than we often give them credit for, says Stanford social psychologist Xuan Zhao.

We shy away from asking for help because we don’t want to bother other people, assuming that our request will feel like an inconvenience to them. But oftentimes, the opposite is true: People want to make a difference in people’s lives and they feel good happy even when they are able to help others, said Zhao.

There are several common reasons why people struggle to ask for help. Some people may fear that asking for help would make them appear incompetent or weak. Some people are concerned about being rejected, which can be embarrassing and painful. Others may be concerned about burdening and inconveniencing others. These concerns may feel more relevant in some contexts than others, but they are all very relatable and very human.

When people are in need of help, they are often caught up in their own concerns and worries and do not fully recognize the prosocial motivations of those around them who are ready to help. This can introduce a persistent difference between how help-seekers and potential helpers consider the same helping event. The researchers consistently observed that help-seekers underestimated how willing strangers and even friends would be to help them and how positive helpers would feel afterward, and overestimated how inconvenienced helpers would feel.

We love stories about spontaneous (自发的) help, and that may explain why random acts of kindness are popular on social media. But in reality, the majority of help occurs only after a request has been made. It’s often not because people don’t want to help and must be pressed to do so. Quite the opposite, people want to help, but they can’t help if they don’t know someone is suffering or struggling. A direct request can remove those uncertainties and unlocks opportunities for positive social connections and emotional closeness.

1. One of the reasons some people hesitate to ask for help is that ______.
A.they fear appearing weak or incapable.B.they enjoy handling challenges independently.
C.they don’t want to make others embarrassed.D.they don’t believe in the power of social connections.
2. What can we learn about potential helpers?
A.They are unwilling to help strangers.B.They willingly offer to help others.
C.They lack motivation to help others.D.They are often underestimated by researchers.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.People are often pressed to help others.
B.Stories about spontaneous help are not true.
C.It is better to directly ask for help if necessary.
D.People are unwilling to help unless requested.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Benefits of Offering HelpB.Ways of Asking for Help
C.Reasons Why People Need HelpD.Shocking Truths About Asking for Help

【推荐3】The idea of being quarantined (隔离)hadn't seemed like a major issue until we all began to realize all of the things that get taken away when school goes. We had taken our "normal" lives for granted and this pandemic (流行病)was proof.    1     Throughout our entire educational lives, we students have always jokingly said we wanted school to be cancelled. We didn't realize, however, that all the activities associated with being in school would be taken away too. School has an influence on so much more than we actually think.    2

While in my room, my sixth-grade cousin opened my door and expressed how she didn't want school to be cancelled because it was the only reason she left the house.    3     This is when I began to acknowledge the true impact school has even on the youngest of children. As a sixth-grader, her only known duty so far was to go to school, learn, maybe participate in a sport or two, and socialize with others. When eating dinner my uncle shared with us that he has no work until April 15. My other aunt and uncle now had to play a larger role than ever imagined in the education of their children. Without one-on-one interaction with a teacher, it's crucial to ensure that their kids of ages 4 and 7 continue learning. During this school closure, parents and students alike have noticed the direct effect social media has on our reactions.    4     Many of these opinions either contribute to hysteria (歇斯底里)or attempt to tell us that we may be overreacting.

5     This pandemic has effects of all different levels of significance, many of which can never be replaced nor made up. The death toll it has worldwide is even more frightening to think about. Everyone is affected in one way or another by this crisis, but let us not forget what school has taught us about ourselves as a community ... that we are stronger together.

A.Initially, everything seemed to be under control.
B.She explained how she would be bored without school.
C.It has provided us with friend groups, hobbies and passions.
D.Since this didn't affect us at all, we continued about our daily lives.
E.Opinions of all sorts are broadcast regardless of the accuracy they contain.
F.We took for granted the simplicity of walking across a stage with a diploma in our hands.
G.However, the impact the coronavirus has had on the world is a generation-changing event.
