Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians(行人)Are Real Danger
We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers:
★Yes, many cyclists believe dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worst offenders.
People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让)them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision (碰撞).
The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.
—Mechael Horan
★ I loved the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists ( (Viewpoints, May 29)). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.
I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.
The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used.
The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!
The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的)jackets and lights at night and in the morning. They should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.
—Carol Harvey
★Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.
I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.
Other road users, including horse rides, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?
It's about time they were registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim compensation.

We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and green means it’s okay to move forward. But why were those particular colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn’t they have been prettier colors like magenta and purple?
Well, it’s important to know that before traffic lights for cars even became a thing, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railroad companies used red to means top, white to mean go, and green to mean caution. As you could imagine, train conductors ran into a few problems with white meaning go. For instance, one train conductor mistook a bright star for a white light and thought he was all clear. Well, as you can imagine, an accident occurred. Because of common incidents like that, railway companies eventually proposed green meaning go, and it’s been that way ever since.
As far as red goes, that’s always been a color that indicated danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it’s the color with the longest wavelength so it can be seen from a greater distance than other colors.
As far as yellow goes, it was used to caution drivers because it has a slightly shorter wavelength than red, but not as short as green.
But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to means top the flow of traffic, at least as far assigns go. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Eventually, materials were developed that were highly reflective and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be painted yellow.

If you have a valid driver’s licence from your home country, you will be able to use the licence for a short period of time in Canada, though this will depend on your individual province and governmental laws.
If you plan to use your foreign licence, the best thing to do is get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your home country before travelling to Canada. An IDP will give you a translation of your licence in French and English.
☆The process of getting a driver’s licence in Canada
✔It will depend on the province or community in which you live and on your driving background.
✔You may need to pass a written examination on the rules of the road (study guides are available) and one or two driving tests.
✔You may choose to pay for driving lessons to prepare for the driving tests (you can search online for lessons).
✔Once you have a licence, it will have to be renewed periodically (see the expiry date on your licence).
✔See the transportation department in your province or territory for more information on driver’s licences, exams and driving lessons.
☆Car Insurance
It is illegal to drive a car without insurance in Canada, so if you own a car, you must ensure that you are covered by a reputable insurance company.
☆Driving laws in Canada
Driving laws are strictly reinforced in Canada and breaking the law can be costly and filled with punishments. It is recommended that you research and follow the rules of your particular province in Canada as some of the laws may differ.

Joe Irvin of Living Streets (the UK charity for everyday walking) says there is “no excuse” for the disagreement and has called on the UK government to act the same way.
“Pavement parking is really thoughtless—and if you think about people with wheelchairs, pushchairs, or sight impairment (受损), they have to go out on to the road,” says Mr Irvin.
Steve Hynd, from Bristol, said his father, who uses a wheelchair, had recently ended up in hospital after a parked car had blocked his path.
“My dad’s experience was near his care home,” he says. “He was trying to wheel himself back inside and a car had parked up on the pavement. He tried to get around it and fell out of his wheelchair.”
“He went to hospital. He’d hurt his head and got a black eye where his glasses had gone in.”
Groups such as the AA and RAC admit “some streets” should not allow pavement parking if it causes problems to emergency vehicles (紧急车辆) — but they do not believe in a complete ban across the country.
AA president Edmund King says, “We would be concerned if there was a total ban. It is clearly possible in some areas to park on the pavement while still allowing room for pushchairs or people in wheelchairs to pass.”
Hugh Bladon of the Alliance of British Drivers argues a complete ban would cause serious problems as some streets were so narrow.
The simple way to deal with the problems, Mr Bladon believes, is that all drivers must leave at least one metre between their car and the inside of the pavement to allow people with pushchairs and so on to pass by.

Three years later, Dimon’s opinion is unchanged. The difference now is that it has gone mainstream. With the pandemic declared over, most American companies seem to have settled on the idea that some in-person time is beneficial — even necessary — for workplaces.
Studies have found people get more feedback when they’re in the same space as their coworkers, leading to more opportunities for advancement. And while findings on productivity are mixed, there’s evidence that fully remote workers encounter more friction when trying to convey information quickly.
After making remote work possible for millions of people, Zoom is now telling some of its own employees to show up in person. The company has decided that employees who live within 50 miles of a Zoom office are required to work in-person two days per week in the office.
However, many office workers who enjoyed greater autonomy while working from home are not readily giving that up, even as their employers step up demands for them to come back. Hired by Microsoft as a senior training associate, Garcia Espejo works from home most of the time, scheduled as she sees fit. For Garcia Espejo, who’s been caring for her elderly parents, it will be painful to lose this flexibility.
“Post-COVID for the first time ever, people are being told when and where to show up, and it just is causing this reaction from people like, ‘Wait a minute. I’m not ready!’” says Debbie Lovich, managing director at the Boston Consulting Group.
Still, the trend is coming. A recent survey of 1,500 office workers, conducted by Boston Consulting Group, found 85% working in “a hybrid mode,” and only 8% fully remote.

Researchers surveyed more than 13,000 teenagers in England, Sweden and the Netherlands on who they thought was the most popular in their class. Then the researchers gave each student in their classroom a popularity score linked to their birth month as well as their age position in their class. They discovered this: the older the student was, the more likely he or she was to be considered popular.
“A child enters school before or after a certain cut-off date and that determines how old or young you are relative to your year group,” says van Aalst. “We found that if you’re born right after the cut-off date, which makes you one of the oldest members of your class, you’re going to be popular.”
They found that the same effect also applied at the year-group level. Here, it was the children who were the oldest relative to all of their peers in the year group-rather than just those in their own class-that were the most popular.
All three countries showed roughly the same pattern (模式). However, at the classroom level, it was in the Netherlands that the pattern was the strongest. This is partly because the country has a system of grade retention - when students don’t meet their academic requirements, their teachers will hold them back a year, which means they then become the oldest in their class and often the most popular.
This relative age effect has also been shown in other areas. “Relative age has earlier been proved to affect school performance-relatively older children do better in school,” says Herman van de Werfhorst at the University of Amsterdam. Similarly, previous research has shown that older children tend to be better at sports than younger students in the same year group.
1. How did the researchers know who the popular students were?A.By recording students’ performance. | B.By studying earlier research results. |
C.By collecting answers from students. | D.By comparing the ages of students. |
A.Popularity. | B.Relative age. | C.The survey data. | D.The cut-off date. |

B.It would be difficult for them to pass the exams in Netherlands. |
C.They might gain more popularity than others in the same year group. |
D.They might be the most popular among the peers of the three countries. |
A.The older a child gets, the wiser he or she will be. |
B.Many students want to be held back to be popular. |
C.Older children are likely to perform better in school. |

One influencer, Carrie Walker, draws 1. 2 million views for a half hour read online. And sharing secrets presents commercial opportunity: selling notebooks and pens on shopping website. or copies of diaries on auction (拍卖) website.
Sally Bayley of the University of Oxford, author of The Private Life of the Diary, regards sharing diaries on social media as the contrary of diary keeping. saying the journal is an internal territory, inseparable (分不开的) from privacy. Yet diaries have also long been shared. In the 19th century, when keeping a journal rose in popularity, diary-sharing then was “extremely common”. Diaries were read aloud or sent to friends. “That distinction between public and private really doesn’t hold at all, ” says Professor Huff. Some diaries served practical uses, sharing advice on self-improvement, pregnancy or childbirth. British women in a strange land often sent diaries back home. They were creating an extended family through these diaries.
Many journal videos also create a sense of community. They share stories of loneliness of struggles with body image or early romantic trouble. They make fun of the improper expectations of youth and the disappointments of adulthood, with the ear of sympathetic strangers.
The co-existence of secrecy and celebration was perhaps best understood by Anais Nin, a 20th-century French-born American whose diary was an exercise in self-creation. “I’m in my journal, and in my journal only. Nothing shows on the outside. Perhaps I don’t exist except as a fantastic character in this story. ”
And Nin published her journals. Its content won her fame that her fiction had not. Her confessional (忏悔的) texts broke through the thin screen between public and private. The diaries are a masterclass in broadcast secrecy.
“We write to taste life twice.” Nin wrote, “in the moment and in reflection. ” She spent her last years reading her diaries to crowds. Like today's influencers, she knew that reflection tastes much sweeter in company.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemical and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

Our expanding waistlines lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article in The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situations—in an airplane crash, for example.
The New York Times’ Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength(强度)— first set more than 60 years ago — require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg). Today, the average American man weighs nearly 194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg). Negroni reports:
“If a heavier person completely fills a seat, the seat is not likely to behave as intended during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption that is built into the aircraft seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly. ”
“Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said,“those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from ‘the uncontrolled movements of the passenger’. ”
Most complaints about airplane seats focus on their lack of comfort and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times’ article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Investigators of the issue got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to comment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight dummies (人体模型). Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said.
Fortunately, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the board’s investigators have never seen an accident involving a commercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.

How can policymakers help people follow through on important tasks? They use carrots and sticks: bonuses, late fees, or regulations. These methods can be clumsy, and often aren’t effective for the situation at hand. Reminding people to form simple plans. however, provides a low-cost, simple, and powerful tool.
Evidence is growing that providing prompts (提示) , which push people at key times to think through how and when they will follow through, make people more likely to act on tasks of importance. In one early randomized (随机的) study on vaccination (预防接种) rates, for example, a team of social psychologists showed that 28% of Oxford University seniors got the shot after being encouraged to review their weekly schedules and to select a possible time to stop by the health center. They were also given a list of times when shots were available and a map showing the health center’s location. Only 3% of the seniors got the shot when simply informed about how effective the shots were.
People who make a plan gain an advantage from their psychological forces. Specifically, they can overcome the tendency to put off as well as the tendency to be overly optimistic about the time it will take to accomplish a task.
People mistakenly believe that their strong intentions are enough to push them to perform desired behaviors. These psychological research results stress the need for policy decisions that encourage plan making and improve social welfare.

Srikant Gowda, a farmer from Karnatakas Shivamogga region, recently made interactional news headlines after it was reported that he used hair dye to paint his watchdog in the characteristic stripes of a tiger. The dog already had a reddish hair color, so all he had to do was add the black stripes and some white to give it the tiger look. It wasn't that Gowda had always wanted to own a tiger, but that he hoped the disguise(乔装) would help the dog drive away the monkeys destroying his crops.
The Indian farmer told reporters that he got the idea four years ago when he visited Uttara Kannada and came across a farmer in Bhatkal who was using a fake tiger doll to scare away monkeys. It seemed silly, but he tried the idea himself and was surprised to see that it actually worked. However, he was convinced that the toy tiger wouldn't fool the monkeys for long, so he decided to try something else as well.
The trick, strange as it might seem, has worked well and the dog has been able to actually scare off the monkeys.
This year Gowda not only used hair dye to make his watchdog look like a small tiger, but he also placed large posters of real tigers and his own fake tiger all over his farmland, hoping that they would keep the monkeys at bay. The paint job actually doesn't harm the dog. It’s actually hair dye(染发剂) and lasts up to a month before fading away.

But instead of relaxing on white sand beaches, Current was disappointed at the number of unwanted animals wandering the streets. “Dogs were everywhere, coming out of the bushes and along the sides of the road,” she recalls of that trip 25 years ago. “They were dirty and covered with fleas and scars.” “It was sad,” she says. “I just couldn’t stand to watch it.”
Current decided to help fix it. She built a second home on Isla Mujeres in 2000, and beginning with a skinny, toothless cat she rescued from the streets, she went on to find homes for more than 2,000 dogs and cats. Today, thanks to Current’s efforts, the island no longer has a wild-dog problem, and “people are more aware of their pets’ needs,” says Marcelino Velazquez, 34, a property manager from Isla Mujeres. “They vaccinate them and don’t abandon them on the streets. The way of thinking has changed.”
For Current, it was a hard-fought transformation. “At first I was angry and thought it was horrible,” Current says of the conditions on the island when she began her work. “But these weren’t bad people. They were people without resources.” When she first arrived, the community had no small-animal vet, and animal control consisted of a team of government workers who’d round up street dogs in a truck and kill them. “I used to follow the truck, and when they’d go for lunch, I’d let the dogs out,” she says. “One time I let the air out of their tires.”
At one point she was caring for more than 65 rescued dogs in her home, and she estimates she has spent about $1 million of her own savings on her efforts. “It was exhausting,” she admits. Now Isla Animals has an on-site shelter with a small staff, and many volunteers and donors among the island’s tourists. Each year the group re-homes more than 170 pets, many of which fly with volunteers to families in the U.S. and Canada.
“There’s nothing in the world like finding a starving dog, nursing it back to good health and finding it a loving home,” Current says.
