Staying connected
When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close because of the fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.
But still, the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring.
“I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.
The coronavirus has changed everyone’s lives, but for students, the disruption feels particularly serious. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were put off. Summer plans, such as camps, are up in the air.
But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with false information, and finding out the best ways they can help – through online method.
For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to help was to create a “social distancing promise” for young people.
“I saw a lot of young people not paying attention,” he said. “They were … still going out, hanging out with others. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger people, who were possibly not watching the news.”
Harycki started a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that followed and kept the locations of people who’d signed the promise. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connected with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing promise to strengthen that although everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.
“Part of what we’re showing is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.

She became the country's Prime Minister (总理) for one day on Oct 7. As she took the seat of Finnish PM, Sanna Marin, she met politicians to spread her message that girls “need to realize more how important they are, and how they are just as good at technology as boys," she told AFP.
This was part of an international campaign called Girls Takeover. It invites girls across the globe to step into the shoes of leaders in different fields of society for a day, according to the BBC. This year, the focus is on promoting digital skills and technological opportunities for girls.
Finland always tops lists for gender equality and is now on its fourth year taking part in Girls Takeover. This year, the young campaigner Aava Murto also posted her speech on Finland's government website to criticize gender stereotypes (刻板印象) about technology.
According to Murto, girls around the world fear being rejected and discriminated (歧视) against for getting involved in IT and technology.
As Murto explained in the speech, if a girl says she plays video games, she is often considered strange. On the other hand, if a boy says he does not play video games or have a game machine, he is considered weird for that reason.
Saying that “Girls, too, have a digital future," Murto called for more help so that many issues can be solved.

One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images. Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.
Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parent’s educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads,” Anderson says.
Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.
For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.
1. Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?A.Radio-listening. | B.Television-watching. |

The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products.
Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will bring the ban into effect from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products deemed to contribute to the climate crisis. Advertisements will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting complaints from the meat sector that the government is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.
Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant-based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for the food of animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen (氮), which can contribute to air pollution, water pollution and climate change. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane (甲烷), a powerful greenhouse gas.
Zlggy Klazes, a councillor from the GroenLinks party, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told the Haarlem105 radio channel: “We are not about what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people want to continue eating meat, it’s fine. We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and meanwhile, encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause. Of course, there are a lot of people who find the decision shocking and unreasonable, but there are also a lot of people who think it’s fine.”

His restaurant on the French Riviera, Mirazur, is considered one of the best in the world, but when it was forced to close its doors temporarily, Colagreco found a way to use his cooking skills to serve the community.
During normal times, Mirazur does great business. But in March, Mirazur had to close its doors due to the coronavirus lockdown. Within days of the reopening in June, Mirazur had already filled up all its reservations for the rest of the year.
The months of closed doors were not a rest for Mirazur’s staff, however. Colagreco and part of Mirazur!s team, instead of standing by, used this time and their talents to aid in the fight against the virus. On April 2, Mirazur’s kitchen, so unique that its menu is a surprise every day, moved its headquarters to nearby La Palmosa Hospital to cook for the health care staff.
Twice a week for two months, the cooks prepared meals to honor those who were facing the pandemic on the front lines. They gave these hospital meals the same elegance and combination of flavors as their dishes at Mirazur. Everything was made with products from the restaurant’s garden, from which its menu is usually nourished, and donations from local suppliers.
A native of La Plata, and trained by Argentine chefs Beatriz Chomnalez and Carlos Alberto “Gato” Dumas, Colagreco has been living in France since 2001. As time went by, his name began to stand out and great new restaurants started to bear his signature. In addition to Mirazur, for example, he opened Grand Coeur in Paris, and L'Estivale by Mauro Colagreco at Nice Airport, Cote d'Azur.

A century ago, only 50 European bison remained on Earth, and they were mostly restricted to nature reserves.
“The conservation successes provide living proof that the world can set,and meet, ambitious biodiversity targets,” said Dr. Jane Smart,Global Director of IUCN' s Biodiversity Conservation Group in a statement.
Eight of the 47 bison herds have special genes for long-term survival, so scientists need to move animals in and out of herds in order to make healthy genes continue. Establishing greater numbers of separate herds will also help prevent possible losses due to things like diseases or natural disasters.
This led to the creation of a project called “Wilder Blean" where Blean Woods in Kent, England, will receive Dutch and Polish bison to create the first wild herd on the island for 6,000 years.
English conservationists and wildlife managers are interested in the effects bison have on the landscape. As large grass-eating animals, the constant foraging, digging and breaking they do on the forest floor have been assumed to have positive effects on the ecosystem.
Bison kill weak or dead trees by eating their bark or rubbing against them to remove their thick winter fur. This turns the tree into food and habitat for insects, which in turn provide food for birds.
In this way they act like forestry experts, and the Kent Wildlife Trust hopes that this significant species will maintain declining populations of plants, birds, insects, and mammals by way of their unique habits.
1. What has made the European wood bison grow in large numbers?A.Being restricted to nature reserves. | B.Being updated on the latest Red List. |

The prize committee mentioned “her unmistakable poetic voice that with plain beauty makes individual existence universal”. Being the first American woman to win the award since Toni Morrison in 1993, Gluck, 77, joins a list of literary giants and previous Nobelists who include, in this century, Canadian short-story master Alice Munro, Chinese magical-realist Mo Yan, etc.
Gluck’s works include 12 collections of poetry and a couple of volumes of essays on literary writing. “All are characterized by trying hard to achieve clarity. Childhood and family life, the close relationship with parents and brothers or sisters is a theme that has remained central to her,” Anders Olsson, the chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said. “She seeks the universal, and in this she takes inspiration from myths (神话) and classical themes,” Olsson added, citing her 2006 collection Averno, which the committee described as “masterly” for its “visionary interpretation of the myth of Persephone’s fall into hell in the captivity of Hades, the god of death”.
As a professor at Yale and a resident of Cambridge, Gluck also served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2003 to 2004 and is no stranger to awards. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her collection of poems titled The Wild Iris, in which “she describes the extraordinary return of life after winter in the poem Snowdrops,” the Nobel literature committee said Thursday. She also won the 2014 National Book Award for poetry for Faithful and Virtuous Night. In 2016, President Obama awarded the National Humanities Medal to Gluck in a White House ceremony.
The publicity-shy Gluck did not immediately make any comment about the latest honor for her body of work, which lasts more than half a century. In a recent interview, she acknowledged that prizes can make “existence in the world easier” but did not amount to the immortality (不朽) of a true artist.

Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps producers to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream –as well as for developing over 75 flavors(味道).
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No — there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and rates 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12 F. Harrisonexplains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,”he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the colour expected from that flavor?”Next it’s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy – working at once cool job.

A very special group of dogs are known as “Therapy (治疗) Dogs”. These dogs are family pets with special training. The training allows them to go into public buildings and comfort people in need. The dogs are trained to be calm and quiet. Loud noises and unfamiliar places don’t frighten them. Therapy dogs can improve people’s health as well. Studies show that when people spend time with animals, their blood pressure goes down. They are calmer, and their mood improves.
Some therapy dogs work in schools and libraries. In one town in California, therapy dogs have become children’s reading friends. The dogs belong to a therapy dog group. Eight of these special dogs have been trained to be listening friends for young readers. The library is trying to encourage kids to enjoy reading. The children are invited to meet at the library. They are paired up with a therapy dog and can read to it.
The dogs make a great audience. They don’t judge a child who cannot read well; they just listen quietly. This would then detect any objects that might be above chest-level. The AI is also able to pair up with various systems, including Google Maps, Amazon Alexa and more.
Of course, the smart cane itself can only integrate with AI functions on a basic level right now but the overall aim is to gather information from various sensors that WeWalk have been installed (安装). It can then use data to find out how visually damaged people use the product and how they behave so that a far more complicated product can be created in the form of advanced AI.
It should be noted that this isn't meant to be a simple smart cane. It's supposed to be connected with transportation networks and even autonomous vehicles. The general idea is that WeWalk would eventually be able to interact with traffic lights so that people can then cross roads without having to push a button. They would also be able to alert (报警) buses so that they can then wait at a stop ahead of time.
Innovations like this would be more than welcome but they would fall short of some of the dreams that were once inspired by Al. People once thought that AI would be able to form logical connections and even change the world. Right now it hasn’t really done that, but scientists are working on it.
Only time will tell if this is ever going to be the case but right now it looks like there is a lot being done to try and make sure that the world of tech and healthcare are being benefited and for all of the right reasons.

I am writing in reply to your article about homelessness in Ledchester as it raises questions about whether or how we should give money to charity.
There are now so many chances to give to charity in the UK these days that it can be difficult to know what is best to do. As your article said, if you go shopping in Ledchester city centre, there will be many chances to give money to charity, or to homeless people who look poor, tired and cold, but the solution is not as easy as you seem to think. Can I be sure that the person won’t spend the money on alcohol(酒) or drugs? You seem to have forgotten the research which showed that 9 out of 10 people begging on the street spend the money they are given on alcohol and drugs. Also, can I be sure that the person isn’t one of those “professional beggars” who simply pretend to be homeless and poor?
I think a more effective way to give money is to buy things in one of the many charity shops in Ledchester such as the Oxfam shop. This isn’t really charity as you are buying something, but you know the money is going to a good cause.
In recent years, as we all know, there have been a lot of big events organized to raise money for charity. Many will remember “Live Aid”. Lots of famous bands got together to hold a concert and make a record with all the money going to Ethiopia because of the food shortages there. The BBC also has a “Children in Need” day every year. In one sense you could say that these events are very successful as they raise a lot of money. However, I don’t believe that these events solve the real problems. In my view, these events just allow people to feel good about themselves for a day and then forget about charity and problems in the developing world for the rest of the year. My wife and I decided to support a child. We give a certain amount of money every month and this goes to pay for the education of a girl in Ethiopia. I would encourage your readers to support a child too. We don’t know if it is the best way to help, but at least it is something.
Yours faithfully,
Tom Blinson

My happiest moments were spent with the few friends I was allowed to have. My family eventually distanced from all the neighbors. So the time came when I didn't even have neighborhood kids to play with. So, I learned to spend my time reading, discovering nature and setting and achieving small goals for myself.
There was another family in town that was quite similar to mine. They had a lot of children like my own family. They attended the same church. I always wondered what it would be like if my family were more like them. They never knew it, but I watched them and admired hem. They were happy and close — everything I wished my family could be.
Decades Later I found myself back at that very same church I had left behind. This time I was in that church for my mother's funeral. As I approached the church for the funeral, memories came flooding back home. I remembered the warm, kind smiles of that family when I was a child.
After the funeral service, I heard a familiar voice call my name. I turned around and he was there, the father of that, family I had admired when I was young. He was a church volunteer for my mother's funeral lunch. We chatted for a bit. I pointed out my happy child to him and it was at that point I realized I was raising my boy in a way I had seen him raise his own children so long ago. He didn't realize it, but my son s life has been greatly affected by him.
