The editing is always brief and smooth and the scenery is pure magic. A wide diversity of the different landscapes are included rather thanjust one habitat. The music fits very well, beautiful and appropriate.
Again, like so many Attenborough nature/wildlife documentaries, “The Great Salmon Run” fascinates, teaches, moves, entertains and attracts. In terms of the facts, there was a very good mix of the known ones and the unknown. Some facts are familiar to us while some are going into details about the different animals, their challenges and some truly amazing wildlife events in their struggles for survival and interaction with other animals whether prey (猎物) or predator (捕食者).
Certainly the salmons are a thing of beauty but the greyish brown bears similarly have impressive moments as well. It may not be new territory for Attenborough, but animals are what one can't get enough of. Besides, there is enough freshness to the material not to make one feel going round in circles but absorbed.
Narration (解说) by Attenborough helps significantly. He clearly knows his stuff and knows what to say and how to say it. He delivers it with his usual richness, soft-spoken enthusiasm and sincerity, never talking down to the viewers and keeping them wanting to know more. Viewers care for what goes on in front of and behind the camera.
At no point does “The Great Salmon Run” ever feel like just a series of scenes. Instead, it feels like its own story and journey, with real, complex emotions and conflicts and animal characters, all of which are developed in a way a human character would in a film.
Overall, amazing.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt that I would get the group of my choice.
The next day, after the bell rang, Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached Group Three, Missy, my best friend’s name, was called. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There must be some mistakes! Then I heard it. “The last group: Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.”
I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by long skirts, and the other girl who wore strange clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why...?” I started. She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
I was shocked. I was amazed. She had seen something in me I hadn’t seen. “Will you help them?” she asked. I stood straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I bravely walked to my group and sat down.
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits(行为怪异的人). I grew sincerely interested in learning something about them. Mauro was struggling with the English language and his lack of friends. Juliette was also alone, because people didn’t understand that she was only allowed to wear long skirts or dresses because of her religion. Rachel wanted to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand except Mrs. Bartlett.
I did learn something that week. I was given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment. We should have handed it right back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.

"I should think you would feel rather small among us big fellows." "Actually I do," smiled Holmes. "I feel like a dime(一角硬币)among a lot of pennies(便士)."
I ever believed only such a person like Holmes could think that way. But I was proven wrong.
Yesterday I watched a huge flight of geese winging their way south through one of those beautiful sunsets that colored the entire sky for a few moments. I saw them as I rested against the lion statue in front of the Chicago Art Institute, where I was watching the Christmas shoppers hurry along Michigan Avenue.
When I looked sideways, I noticed that a bag lady, standing a few feet away, had also been watching the geese with great attention. Sensing someone was looking at her, she cast a sideways look. Our eyes met and we smiled silently acknowledging(承认) the fact that we had shared an amazing sight, a symbol of the secret of the struggle to survive. I overheard the lady talking to herself as she walked away. Her words, "Life treats me kindly", nearly made my jaw drop.
Was the lady, this homeless street beggar, being kidding or even mindless? No. I believed the sight of the geese had reminded her of, however briefly, the difficult and unpleasant reality of her own struggle. I realized later that moments such as this one provided her with great comfort and encouragement; it was the way she survived the hardness of the street. Her smile was real.
The sight of the geese was her Christmas present. It was proof(证明) that hard work mattered. It was all she needed. I envy her.

The three guys had become acquainted in band class, and organizing a group had been Mike’s idea. Mike played the guitar and acted as leader. John was on drums and James was on the saxophone. The three got together just for fun and named their group Playday.
But when some fans praised their talent, they decided to turn fun into profit. To make themselves known, Playday volunteered to entertain at parties. They played for free at school get-togethers. Mike loved the applause! He felt like a superstar. They practiced hard and discussed young musicians who had vaulted into prominence.
“The Jackson Five were kids,” John said. “Michael shot to fame like a rocket!” He exclaimed. “We can do it!” Mike encouraged the group.
After months of keeping Spirits high, Mike was tired. They haven’t seen even a cent. Let alone making a killing. Everyone was in low spirits. They decided to break up after one final volunteer job. The next day, they were to perform for patients at the Children’s Hospital where Mike’s mother worked as a nurse.
The next day the three young guys set up in the hospital lobby, and the nurses brought in the audience. As Playday began its number, Mike could feel their lack of spirit. Then Mike spotted one patient sitting limply in her wheelchair. Her expression was vacant, but when music filled the room, this rag doll came to life. She sat up straight, and the light that shone in her eyes lighted up something in Mike. He felt the thrill he’d been missing. As Mike’s playing caught fire, James and John gained energy. Soon, Playday was rocking as never before.
After the performance, the three guys spent time with the patients. Mike spoke to the girl who had encouraged him to play so well. “Wouldn’t it feel great to be rich and famous?” she asked, eyes still bright. “Will you be a rock star?” “Probably not,” Mike answered. “But I’ll never give up my music. He told her that he did not know. Galaxy decided to help them. She had learned sign language when she served as a volunteer in the deaf and mute (聋哑的) school. Then she showed the woman the direction and left her email address to them in case they needed her help later.
She received an email from that man the next day. Kazrim was his name. Galaxy replied his mail sincerely. They both started chatting online soon after and began seeing each other. Although they only communicated with the sign language, it never bothered her.
Galaxy grew fond of him gradually. Obviously, Kazrim was the same too. He presented Galaxy with a bunch of sunflowers and asked her sincerely, “Are you willing to be my girlfriend? Galaxy was pleasantly surprised. She requested him to give her some time to persuade her parents. As she had expected, her parents were furious after they had learned of their love story. Galaxy explained, “Kazrim is an excellent and a very optimistic person. He has a very positive attitude towards life and work. He cares for others always. He is 100% better than the normal. Moreover, the mute is still a human. He should have a perfect and wonderful love.”

“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,”said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University. Of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI. Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate heavy activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,”the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.

Police can use software to age photos of people who have been missing for a while, but these tend to work best in adults, as age-related changes to adult faces are more predictable and so easier to simulate.
With children, these aged images don't tend to be like the older child, and matching photos of found children to old images in a database of missing children is difficult.
Now Debayan Deb, a professor at Michigan State University, and his colleagues have created an program to do this for them. They trained a face-recognition program on data sets including the Children Longitudinal Face data set, which contains images of nearly 1000 children aged between 2 and 18 years old. Each was photographed at least four times over a period of six years.
The AI learned to match recent photographs of children with images taken 2.5 years earlier 80 per cent of the time.
With one year between the two photographs, the method was 90 per cent accurate at identifying faces. This dropped to 73 per cent after three years. The approach beats comparing children with photos taken when they were aged 0 to 4 that have been aged by software, which hovers at 50 percent recognition after six months. The new AI might help to improve accuracy of this kind of software as well.
"This is a very good paper that could potentially be used to identify missing children," says Amarjot Singh at the University of Cambridge.
Deb's next goal is to extend the age gap. His team also hopes to develop an app that could be used to fight child trafficking.
1. The software which police has used can_________.A.match photos of found kids to former images | B.predict the changes of people over time |
C.produce accurate images of children | D.age the photos of missing people |
A.Because the data set of child face images is quite large. |
B.Because the software can’t age the photos of those kids. |
C.Because aged images aren’t very alike to the older child. |
D.Because it’s difficult to recognize the older kids with photos. |
A.helps police identify missing children | B.intends to develop a new app |
C.improved the software used by police | D.will give their app to police |
