Whether you’re a boy or a girl and whether you're a freshman or a senior, developing the following skills will help you achieve success in school and in life.
Time management. There are just 24 hours in each day. What you do with that time makes all the difference. While high-school students have an average of 35 hours per week of class time, college students have an average of 15 to 18 hours per week. Manage your free time wisely and you'll make full use of each day.
Good study habits. If you've got them, it's great. If not, there's still time to develop them. Good study habits include the following:
• Always be prepared for class, and attend classes regularly. No cutting!
• Finish homework in a timely manner.
• Review your notes daily rather than study for tests the night before.
• Set aside quiet time each day for study, even if you don't have homework or a test the next day!
Good note-taking. You can't possibly set down everything the teacher says since we talk at a pace of about 225 words per minute. But, you do need to set down the important material. Note-taking should be in a way that's the most helpful to you. You can try writing notes on different colored cards. If you really have a problem with note-taking, you might ask your teacher if you can record daily lessons. Do whatever it takes!
Review of daily notes. Don't wait until the night before the test to review your notes. Go over your notes each day while the lecture is still fresh in your mind. Add any missing pieces. Compare your notes with a classmate's notes. Review your notes each day to improve your learning and build towards your final goal: mastery of the subject or skill.

You may be bored from time to time and feel like you need something new or exciting in your life. It’s perfectly natural to feel this way from time to time, but feeling bored often can also mean that your present life isn’t satisfying you as much as it could.
When you feel bored, think about what activities bring you joy and happiness. Perhaps you find that hobbies are what help improve your spirits when life feels standstill. After all, having interests and pursuing (追求) them often can have a great effect on the quality of your life and how satisfied you feel. If this sounds like something that would benefit your life, we have some great ideas for hobbies to pursue when you’re bored!
One of the easiest and most effective ways to relieve (缓解) boredom is to take exercise. Exercise is not only good for your body but also your mind. When your body is moving, it re-leases (释放) certain chemicals that make you feel good. Learning a new language is another way to challenge yourself and become more creative. It can also open up a whole new culture and way of thinking for you! Many people find that learning a new language gives them a sense of achievement that they don’t get from other hobbies.
Furthermore, reading is a hobby that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. It’s inexpensive, easy to fit into your plan and can be done just about anywhere. It doesn’t require special equipment or supplies, and you can do it alone or with others. The last way to avoid feeling bored inside is to spend time outdoors. Find a place to go where you can get away from the noise and other troubles. You may find that being outside offers a sense of peace and calmness.

“Where are you going to college?” “Tm going to my local community college.” My answer seemed to be the magic phrase that would wipe the smile right of many people's faces. It's clear that people have a lot of misconceptions(误解) about community colleges.
Many people think community colleges are only for people who couldn't get into a four-year school. But it is not true. In high school, I always got A's. But when it came to applying to colleges, I had no idea what I wanted to major in and couldn't justify spending thousands of dollars at a 4-year school until I knew what I wanted to do. My parents were very supportive of my decision to attend the community college.
Some people will ask, “Since the community college is cheaper, will you get a good education?" I found that nearly all of my professors taught the same courses at 4-year colleges. My professors were knowledgeable and experienced, and I found many of the courses challenging.
Some people think if I attend the community college, I will miss out on the “college experience”. I must admit that this is something I worried about a great deal the summer before college. But I soon learned that the community college, just like any other college, is what you make of it. I strived to make the most of my time at the community college. I also made tons of friends by joining clubs and attending student government meetings.
I took a lot of different courses. I had an amazing professor who suggested I take her journalism class. Never having written for my high school newspapers, I dared not take it, but since she was so enthusiastic, I eventually decided to have a try. That one course was all it took for me to realize that I wanted to become a journalist.
I look forward to graduating this May to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. Community colleges may not be for everyone, but for me it is a life-changing experience that has helped me discover who I am and the person I hope to become.

【推荐1】A few years ago, my younger sister and I were the first to board our flight for Norfolk, Virginia. Just as we were about to board the plane, a mechanic came out of the aircraft and blocked the door with his arms. He turned to the flight attendant and hurriedly stated, “We got problems!”
I thought to myself, “Why did I have to be the one to hear that? Why couldn’t I have been at the back of the line? I didn’t need to know that!” Very soon we were back in the terminal, waiting, and then finally back on the plane. I waited for the pilot to give an explanation. Pilots take courses to ease passengers’ mind, right? They know what to say to calm nerves.
Unfortunately, I didn’t think this pilot took that course. Soon his voice thundered throughout the plane. “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. We had no power on the plane. We have a generator on the ground right now, and we’re going to jump—start the engine. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what happens.”
See what happens? We were going to get up in the air, and see what happens? Couldn’t we have another plan, one that’s been worked out just a little better?
At this point, all I could do was to laugh nervously. One woman started yelling, “Oh no! We’re going to crash!” There were sighs of desperation and anxiety spreading throughout the cabin. Finally, we got up in the air thirty minutes later, and what happened? Nothing—other than thrust(推力) and lift. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched the ground than a round of applause burst out, as everyone throughout the airplane breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.
Although, I did sincerely like to have a plan better than “see what happens” worked out when flying—it really isn’t such a bad life strategy. Success will never be guaranteed. The best thing you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. Sometimes adjustments would be made in the air, or shall we say, in the middle of the process.
1. The purpose of the text is to _______.A.introduce a frightening flight experience |
B.prove that taking a plane is dangerous |
C.show a way of making plans |

B.The pilot said nothing to calm the passengers. |
C.The passengers arrived in Norfolk safely. |
D.The flight was delayed for half an hour. |
A.complained about the mechanic’s carelessness |
B.stood up and started yelling |
C.waited calmly for the problems to be solved |

B.To avoid repeating failure, give yourself all the reasons why you can’t. |
C.To set up a business, don’t wait until you have everything you need. |

【推荐3】It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going back to school.
Most teachers start the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class.
When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.
You might have already known a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it's a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!
Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they'll have mapped out a seating plan. It's a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don't forget.
Here are a few final tips for a fantastic (奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments (作业) and handing in your homework on time. Take your time with schoolwork. If you don't understand something, ask the teacher.
1. What can we conclude from the first paragraph?A.All students feel excited about a new term. |
B.All teachers let students pick their seats. |
C.New school worries do not last very long. |
D.Being hard-working helps make new friends. |
A.turn to their teachers | B.write them down |
C.ask their parents | D.help with each other |
A.To offer students some advice on starting a new school term. |
B.To encourage students to work harder in a new school term. |
C.To remind children of the importance of starting school. |
D.To introduce a way to improve students' learning ability. |
