Why should most of us hate spiders when we know deeply how much good they do? Is it because they somehow seem so alien? After all, what other land creatures on earth have eight legs? What other creatures spin silk webs in which to catch and wrap their prey to preserve it for the future, much as we put food in the fridge to eat later? I do not personally suffer from arachnophobia, the name given to an abnormal fear of spiders, but I can't say that I like the little beasts. However, some people do, and they actually keep them as pets!
There is a wide variety of spiders in the world. In fact it has been estimated that there are some 35,000 species——from little "money spiders" that live in your back garden, to the "black widow spider", and the “tarantula” ,the spider that is now sometimes kept as a pet.
A tarantula can be any one of a large hairy spiders family and there are about 800 species of them. While experts can tell the difference between species at a glance, most are usually described in reference books as “rather slowly" with “a strong bite which may be poisonous”. They are covered with hairs which can cause a rash (皮疹)if they are handled.
No one has calculated the number of human deaths caused by a bite from a tarantula perhaps because it has never happened, or happened so rarely, and indeed a tarantula will do no harm to anyone if handled correctly. Their disgusting image cannot belie their gentle nature but experts tell us not to handle a tarantula without expert advice.
Tarantulas are popular as pets and it requires very little space to maintain them in excellent condition. They should be kept singly in a glass container, which need not be very large but should have a layer of stones in the bottom. They feed on insects, and while young tarantulas eat twice a week, adults will often eat no more than once every 10 days.
You might like the idea of keeping a tarantula, but personally I am content with just watching them at a distance.

Scientists have found increasing evidence that orcas have developed a complex culture: A series of behaviors animals learn from one another.
Through researches, scientists discover that orcas have unique family structures and behaviors, which are passed from generation to generation. They stay in groups and the leading female orcas will teach specific behaviors to younger animals. This complex culture influences deeply what and how orcas eat, what they do for fun, and even their choice of mates.
Brian Skerry, a photographer of National Geographic, traveled the globe to record orcas’ activities. “These animals have identity, they have personality, they have traditions, they have language, and food preferences and singing competitions. And they have empathy. They care about each other.” said Brian. He found that diving with these special creatures can lead to strange and wonderful situations. And he hopes that existing features of orcas can be an opportunity for us humans to begin to see ourselves not so different than the natural world.
Our own culture has helped us to accommodate to a number of evolutionary selection pressures — from hot deserts to the cold Arctic. And the same is true of orcas. By developing new behaviors, they have been able to occupy a range of ecological chain, such as penguin hunters in the South Ocean and fish eaters in the Pacific Ocean. Hal White, head of Dalhousie University, concludes, “Culture may be very important to orcas.” And he believes the new form of culture brings out all these changes.
1. What can we infer about orcas?A.They prefer staying alone. | B.They talk with others by gesture. |
C.They learn behaviors from others. | D.They have common family structures. |

Many people feel captivated(迷住)by the intelligent and convivial nature of dolphins. So, the question arises, is it safe to swim with dolphins?
Well, first let us see the contrast between captivity-bred and wild dolphins. The very essence of these mammals makes them unsuited for imprisonment. In untamed conditions, dolphins live in large groups(referred to as pods), often in tight family units. The social bond last for many years.
Dolphins travel extensive distances each day, sometimes staying in the same place for hours or days, other times they swim in straight lines for hundred miles. They move along the coastline several miles and then turning back to go wherever they came from.
As the air is vital for the birds to soar, so is the water for dolphins. It is most important for them as they can freely move side to side and up-down.
They never come to shore. They are always attentive to even the slightest movement in the water and are always moving. Keeping this in mind, it is burdensome to imagine the catastrophe(灾难)of life in captivity for dolphins.
Their life is pretty much stagnant. Swim in a limited space, wait till it’s time to be fed, face the aggression of other dolphins from different pods, and interact with humans. After shedding some light on the living habits of dolphins, it would be easy to decide, is it safe to swim with dolphins?
A.In some species, it is for a lifetime. |
B.However, dolphins never stop to rest. |
C.The captivity-bred dolphins must stay in closed tanks. |
D.The face of a dolphin gives the illusion of happy and smiley nature. |
E.The enclosure limits their speed, depth, and protection from the sun. |
F.Dolphins living in bondage suffer silently for the entertainment of humans. |

The 260 dogs for the study were presented with two buckets (桶), one of which contained dog food that the dogs could access by knocking off a paper lid with their nose or paw. The dogs were at first trained to trust a person they had never met, called the “communicator”, to help them find the food from the correct bucket. The communicator would point to the food-filled bucket, look at the dog and then say “Look, this is good, this is very good!” to encourage the dog towards the food.
After establishing this trust between the communicator and the dogs, the researchers added the all-important part of deception into the mix. The dogs watched another stranger, known as “the hider”, move the dog food from one bucket (bucket A) to another (bucket B). This was done both with and without the communicator in the room—so the communicator was either witness to the switch or they weren't. In both of these conditions, the communicator would recommend bucket A to the dog, which was now empty.
Across the two conditions, more dogs followed their own visual experience of where the food had been hidden rather than the communicator's suggestion. About two-thirds of dogs ignored the communicator who had witnessed the food switch and went on to recommend empty bucket A.
According to Huber, dogs did not rely on the communicator anymore, which contrasts with previous studies involving apes and children under five years. In these previous studies, if a communicator had witnessed a switch but recommended an empty bowl of food, young children and apes would follow their misguiding advice.
“Dogs do not follow human wrong pointing gestures blindly, although sometimes they find them difficult to ignore,” they conclude. “Instead, they can adjust their behaviour flexibly depending on the trustworthiness of the people giving information and can recognize between helpful and unhelpful experimenters.”

The report, released Wednesday by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks the countries of the world based on six different categories of well-being: income, freedom, trust, life expectancy, generosity and social support. This year's report also pays special attention to the happiness of each country's immigrants.
The U.S. dropped four spots from 2017 and landed in the 18th place, and last year's winner, Norway, came in second place — followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland.
'' The top five countries all have almost equally high values for the six factors found to support happiness, and four of these countries—Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and now Finland — have been in first place in the six World Happiness Report rankings since the first report" in 2012, '' co-editor John Helliwell told CNN. '' In a division with such excellent teams, changes in the top spot are to be expected."
Rounding out the top 10 happiest countries was Canada in sixth place, then New Zealand, Sweden and Australia. The order of the top 10 nations changed from the 2017 list but the countries did not, according to the report. They were also 10 of the 11 top spots in the immigrant happiness category (including Mexico — 24th overall, but 10th in immigration).
'' The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of immigrants and the locally born, '' Helliwell said in a statement. '' Although immigrants come from countries with very different levels of happiness, their reported life evaluations resemble those of other residents in their new countries. Those who move to happier countries gain, while those who move to less happy countries lose. ''
Other major world powers placed in significantly low spots on the list. Germany came in 15th, the UK was 19th — followed by Japan in 54th place, Russia in 59th and China in 86th.
The report, based on surveys completed by citizen volunteers, came just under a week before World Happiness Day on March 20, when the UN declared to recognize '' the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations inthe lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives''

Simply Electrifying offers the comprehensive story of one of mankind's most important journeys: from a time when only a few could even imagine a world with electricity to today when, for most of us, a world without electricity would be unimaginable.
Since the birth of the modern science of electricity 265 years ago, mankind has built a great structure to produce, deliver, and use electricity, thanks to a combination of pioneering science, innovative technology, wise business strategy, and pervasive (到处存在的) economic and environmental regulation.
Simply Electrifying brings to life the stories of the people that made it all possible- from early pathfinders like Benjamin Franklin, Michael Faraday, James Clerk Maxwell, and Albert Einstein to innovators such as Samuel Morse, Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla. In modern times, business strategists and economic and environmental regulation driven by many, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Rachel Carson, and even President Barack Obama, have shaped how we use and understand electricity in important ways. Today, Elon Musk and others are on the edge of again changing the way we think about and interact with it.
Simply Electrifying is painstakingly researched and beautifully written, showing us how both profit-makers and policy-makers must use a wide-angle lens to truly understand the past and predict the future.

Ember Mug
It’s hard to always keep coffee at the right temperature, especially in winter. It’s too hot to drink at first, but before we know it, it gets too cold and loses all its taste. The perfect level of warmth for a cup of coffee only lasts for 37 seconds, which makes the Ember Mug a great innovation. It keeps your coffee or tea at a certain temperature, anywhere between 45℃ and 62℃ once you set it through a smart-phone app.
Tasty One Top
TV cooking shows make cooking look so easy, but it’s almost impossible to get the recipes to cook the same as how the professionals cook. However, the Tasty One Top DIY cooking companion is here to help. Developed by Buzzfeed, the cooker can be connected to a smartphone app, which has more than 1,700 recipes and videos. You choose a recipe and the app will let the cooker know what to do. For example, it’ll tell you when to turn your steak or when to add certain ingredients.
Jibo
Smart speakers from companies like Amazon and Xiaomi have added a lot of fun to our lives, but they’re still just faceless speakers. However, Jibo, developed by MIT professor Cynthia Breazeal, has brought smart technology to life. Said to be “the world’s first social robot for the home”, Jibo looks like a cartoon character. Inside its “head”, there are various sensors (传感器) and cameras, which allow it to recognize faces and speech. It can also set alarms, remind you of important things, tell you the weather and read news or messages from your friends and family.

When Starbucks opened its first shop there in 1999, it was far from clear that the country’s tea-drinkers would take to such a different and usually more costly source of caffeine. Starbucks tried to attract customers to coffee’s bitter taste by promoting milk and sugar-heavy concoctions(调和) such as Frappuccinos.
But coffee has become fashionable among the middle class in China. Starbucks now has about 3, 800 shops in China more than in any other country outside America. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站), says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than10 %year. Starbucks and its rivals see big opportunities for expanding there.
So too, however, do home-grown competitors. A major new presence is Luckin Coffee, Beijing- based chain. Since its founding less than two years ago, it has opened more than 2,300 shops. On May 17th Luckin’s initial public offering on the Nasdaq stockmarket raised more than $570m,giving it a value of about $4bn.
Luckin’s remarkable growth is sign of change. No longer do Chinese consumers see coffee as such a luxury. Most of Luckin’s shops are merely kiosks where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app. Independent coffee shops are springing up. The growth is striking considering the country’s reputation for its tea-drinking culture where many residents like to relax in teahouses sipping tea served gracefully.
But the two markets are different. The teahouses tend to cater to older people who like to spend long hours playing mahjong and gossiping. At the coffee shops it is rare to see anyone over 40. Young people use them for socialising, but much of their interaction is online -sharing photos of their drinks and of the coffee-making equipment. An option on the Chinese rating app Dianping allows users to search for wanghong ("internet viral") coffee houses.
1. How did Starbucks try to appeal to Chinese consumers?A.By reducing the price slightly. | B.By introducing the benefits of coffee. |
C.By making coffee taste not so bitter. | D.By promoting its products effectively. |
A.People tend to like coffee’s bitter taste. |

That memory impairment(损伤) might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go.
Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big a radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking.
A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. Even the type of network signal that a phone uses can matter. Much of Switzerland was using an older “second-generation” type of cell phone networks, the study reports. Many phone carriers (通讯公司) have moved away from such networks. And more companies plan to update their networks within the next few years.
The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.

Money
As is well known, the Chinese are conservative when they are planning to spend money, but far fewer American families are saving money for emergencies and education than their Chinese counterparts (对等的人)..
Privacy
Chinese people do not have the same concept of privacy as American do. They talk about topic such as ages, income or marital (婚姻的) status, which Americans think is annoying and disturbing.
Family
In China, elders are traditionally treated with great respect while young are cared for. In America, the goal of the family is to encourage independence, particularly that of the children. Unlike the Chinese, older Americans seldom live with their children.
Friends
Chinese people have different meanings to define friends. Just hanging out together time to time is not friendship. Friendship means lifelong friends who feel it deeply necessary to give each other whatever help might seem required. Americans always call people they meet friends, so the definition of friends is general and different. There are work friends, playing friends, school friends and drinking friends.
Education
Chinese people value education and career more than Americans, who in turn attach more great importance to good character and faith, which they think are of great value in their life.
________
Basically China values the community and the USA values the individual. If you achieve something in the USA, it’s because you are great. While in China, if you achieve something, it’s because the team, or family, or company is great. Everything you do gets owed to the greater whole, while in American individual achievements are celebrated.
1. What can be inferred from the passage?A.Americans lay more stress on faith and good personality. |

【推荐3】Knowing how to communicate well needs very personal attention between you and another human being. Is there a better way to learn how to communicate effectively? Yes, there is. Please follow the 3 basic steps below.
* Relax and breathe
Whether it's a business meeting or a first date, the first thing you must do in order to communicate is to relax.
When you relax, you are in control. You control your reactions and your reactions do not control you. Breathing is central to relaxation. Take a few deep breaths and your body will begin to be more at ease. This will help you apply what you already know about how to communicate well.
* Think and you will be prepared
Have you ever heard the old saying "think before you speak"? Well, it is true. By thinking ahead about how the conversation might flow, you will be better prepared, more at ease and more confident.
* Follow the flow of the conversation
If you are uncomfortable, being silent will only make it worse and make the other person uncomfortable as well. So when all else fails, follow through with small talk until a common topic appears.
A good way to keep a conversation going is to ask the other person questions. People love to talk about themselves and if you do this, they will leave the conversation, thinking very highly of you. Learning good communication skills is not something out of reach. If you make an effort, you will succeed.
