Climate change is bad news for the world’s coral reefs. As global temperatures increase, the world’s glaciers melt,     1     (cause) sea levels and ocean temperatures to rise. These conditions have led to coral bleaching(白化) events,     2     the coral turns white and slowly dies, unable to survive in its changing environment.

Global sea levels     3    (expect) to rise about 1.5 feet by 2100, meaning coral reefs will be deeper underwater than they were     4    (previous)in. The deeper the coral, the less light it receives, and the less     5    (able) it has to make food. This has potential to change the entire ecosystems of reefs and the marine life they support.

But a new study from a team of     6    (researcher) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) provides a ray of hope. They studied nearly 3,000 corals from 124 species at two reefs off     7     coast of Singapore: Pulau Hantu and Raffles Lighthouse. The water where these reefs live is     8    (cloud), murky and thick with sediment(沉淀物).

The light reaches down about 26 feet, yet there are corals growing well     9     that level and below. They’ve adapted to surviving under the changing conditions. Researchers say it’s likely that these corals will survive sea-level rise, according to the findings     10    (publish) in the journal Marine Environmental Research.

Surprising Facts About At-Home DNA Tests

If you send your DNA to two different companies to find out about your ancestry, you may end up with two different results. That's     1     there's no certification (鉴定) required for DNA-testing companies. They may get the basic idea correct —     2     you are a little less than half northern European, for example, but when they say you're 30 percent from here and 60 percent from there, it's a statistical guess based on their own database and method.

Your results will be     3     (precise) if you're not a native. The more people from your ancestral region in a company's database, the more accurate your results will be.

You can find out your risk of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's from an at-home DNA test kit, but a laboratory     4     (authorize) to do medical testing will give you much more conclusive results.

The results of your genetic testing could affect your ability to get insurance.     5     federal law prohibits health insurers from denying coverage based on genetic test results, the law does not apply to life, disability, and long-term-care insurance.

Law-enforcement agencies are increasingly using family tree DNA databases to solve crimes, as was done in the arrest of a former police officer accused of being the Golden State Killer. California detectives took the DNA results from various crime scenes,     6     (look) for partial matches on a public genealogy database, and eventually found their man.

The market is also exploding with companies     7     (claim) they can pinpoint the right product -- for your skin or your waistline, for instance - based on a DNA test. But consider them entertainment     8     real science, Greely says. A study found that diets based on genetic tests didn't help people lose weight.

Still, DNA tests can answer questions you've had about yourself - and     9     you didn't know to ask. For example, for     10     additional cost, 23 and Me will include your results on more than 25 individual traits, including if you are likely to be a morning person, whether your hatred of cilantro is genetic, and if your earwax is more likely to be dry or wet.

Steps to take to beat the pandemic

It is only a matter of time for China to go through the pandemic and for society     4     (return) to normal. What we need to do is to work together and cope with the epidemic in a more smooth and orderly way. To do this, at least three     5     (aspect) are urgent. First, we need to continue to reduce the panic at     6     social level. Judging from the nationwide rush to buy antipyretic (退热的) painkillers and Lianhua Qingwen capsules, we know that the anxiety and fear still exist in a certain range. If the panic cannot be     7     (effective) reduced, it will worsen the phenomenon. Second, we must increase the supply of therapeutic (治疗的) drugs and antipyretic painkillers. It is suggested that some drugs are mainly used to relieve the pain of ordinary infected people     8     have obvious symptoms. Third, a protection mechanism (机制)   for the   elderly and   the   weak with       9     (basis) diseases should be established.     10     we can protect the elderly and the weak with diseases and reduce the death rate as much as possible is not only related to morality and ethics, but also results in the overall achievements of epidemic prevention in China.
