Cultural tourism helps to encourage the protection of culture and heritage by keeping endangered traditions alive. For example, heritage handicraft skills (手工技能) might be little practical, but outside interest could be enough to safeguard a tradition that might otherwise have been lost.
Cultural tourism also improves education.
However, when cultural practices and traditions are presented only for tourism purposes, they may lose their true meaning and become superficial (表面的) performances aimed at entertaining tourists.
In addition, a lot of tourists can put a pressure on local resources.
Most importantly, cultural tourism may lead to the loss of cultural diversity. As destinations become more popular to mass tourism, there is a risk of homogenization, where cultural practices and traditions become standardized to the tastes and expectations of tourists.
A.Only when culture tourism is managed properly |
B.This can lead to a misunderstanding of the culture |
C.It is important to improve cultural understanding and respect |
D.Because cultural tourism often involves travelling to far areas |
E.Travelers have the chance to take part in educational activities |
F.But it’s worth noting that this type of travel has both benefits and downsides |
G.Popular cultural destinations often experience an increase in the number of visitors |
【推荐2】Space travel has arrived! Companies like SpaceX are already taking paying customers into space and Virgin Galactic is booking passengers for its first business flight for the summer of 2023. But space travel is available (可获得的) to a small group of people who are very rich. Now, a Japanese company plans on opening space up to ordinary people.
The company is planning on sending space viewing balloons that will make space travel available to people who are not wealthy or have no skills needed to fly a rocket (火箭). “It’s safe and money -saving for people,” Keisuke Iwaya, the CEO of the company, told reporters. “The idea is to make space travel for everyone.” he added.
While the balloons do not actually go into outer space, the capsule (太空舱) will fly higher than some planes and will give passengers a clear view of the universe (宇宙).
The company developed a capsule that can fit two people—a pilot and passenger—and a balloon that can fly to a height of 25 kilometers. It took 12 years to develop. Unlike rockets and hot air balloons, the reusable balloons will be lifted by helium (a very light gas). It will take two hours to rise and will stay there for an hour before beginning its going down. The capsule itself is 1.5 meters wide and has several windows that will allow passengers to view the earth below or the universe above.
Keisuke Iwaya worked together with the Japanese travel company JTB Corp to support the sales when the space capsule is ready to operate as a business. Applications are now being accepted until the end of August, 2023. The first five passengers will be announced in October. At this point, the price is out of reach at €167,000 but will be reduced to the tens of thousands of euros.
The first flights will leave once every week, weather permitting. While most future space travelers may dream about flying into space in a rocket, floating in a balloon capsule is a kinder and safer way to travel. Wish you a safe journey!

【推荐3】There are a lot of names for people who travel the world—backpackers, tourists, explorers, travelers. Labels (标签) are everywhere but seem especially popular among travelers trying to differentiate (区别) their style of travel. For many travelers, these labels make them feel better over another.
Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods once said, “Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.” The idea here is that travelers are better at exploring the world than tourists. They dig deep into the culture, drink it up, and get to know a place while a tourist takes pictures and declares to have “done Paris.”
But that’s wrong, we are all tourists.
On the road, backpackers love to talk about how real their travels are and how unreal tourists are. “Look at those tourists over there,” they say. They scoff at others who travel too quickly or to places that they think are not well worth visiting. Nevertheless, they do so while eating hamburgers and drinking beers with other travelers.
The only way to really get to know a place deeply is to live there. If you want to live like a local, find an apartment, get a job, go to work, and do the same things as you did back home.
We are all only passing through a culture, getting a small taste before moving on to the next place. Even if we stay weeks or months, we’re just getting in touch with the surface. As a matter of fact, we are all really just tourists, or explorers, or travelers. Call yourself whatever you want—it’s all the same as we’re all trying to do the same thing—see the world.
So don’t label anyone and don’t let anyone label you. We’re all tourists. We’re all travelers. What we are all doing is more important than what we call ourselves. Let’s just enjoy the fact that we are simply people on the road.
1. The purpose of Andrew Zimmern’s words in Paragraph 2 is to ________.A.present amazing experiences | B.tell travelers from tourists |
C.get to know different people | D.give an example of misunderstanding |
A.laugh at | B.model after |
C.take notice of | D.agree with |
A.They live like locals while traveling. |
B.They have a brief experience of places. |
C.They enjoy tasty food on the way. |
D.They like calling themselves explorers. |
A.Explore deep into cultures. |
B.Make a detailed trip schedule. |
C.Just enjoy the trip on the road. |

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota
More than a third of this Northwoods network of boreal forests and rocky islands is covered by water—four huge lakes plus 26 smaller ones. New environmental protections make now an ideal time to experience these waterways via a tour boat. Easy-access shoreline campsites line the park’s major lakes.

This coast-meets-mountains reserve takes wildlife watching to the next level. Use the park’s only maintained long trail to the outlook over Harding Icefield for breathtaking views of this expansive, icy landscape. From a tour boat, look out for orcas, humpback whales, and dolphins among the waves and Steller sea lions and harbor seals on the beaches.
Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana
Kids will find more than just a day at the beach in this welcome pocket of nature. It’s a 45-minute drive from Chicago here. An impressively diverse number of ecosystems in this compact park let families explore wetlands, pine forests and 15 miles of sandy shoreline in a day.
Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
Accessible only by boat or seaplane, this park offers untouched beaches, and the chance to explore the historic Fort Jefferson. Embarrassingly, I have also realised just how much money I've squandered down the pubs in restaurants and through mindless shopping.
Free of any financial worries, I was spending without thinking. Stuck in a cycle of consumerism, I was struggling in vain to spend my way to happiness. Giving up spending for a year was an extreme approach, but I wanted to taste extreme frugality, shake up my spending patterns and overpay my mortgage instead of shopping. I could continue to pay my bills, including mortgages, broadband(宽带), phone bill, charity donations, life insurances, money to help my family and basic groceries.
It was not easy, especially in the first few months. There were lows, such as when I missed my favourite jazz concerts and hit films. There have also been some awkward moments when I've turned up to a friend's house for dinner empty-handed. I did a lot of washing up at my friends' houses in return this year.
I did find new ways to live, however. Using sites such as Eventbrite I have been to film screenings, wine tasting evenings and theatre productions for free. Living in London I have a wealth of free cultural activities on my doorstep and I've been to more art exhibitions this year than ever before. I even managed a free holiday, cycling the
Suffolk and Norfolk coast and camping on beaches. It's something I'd never done before and probably wouldn't have, were it not for the challenge.
The last 12 months have taught me what things I really need. I can honestly say I' m happier now. I've gained confidence and skills, done things and met lovely people I wouldn't have otherwise done or met.

Of course, it wasn't only Tom and his best friend John that Janice was after. She had two friends, Wilma and Bobby, who were almost as big as she was,and the three of them would wander around the playground, grabbing up rocks, running through jump ropes, and laughing while second graders screamed. They would even stand outside the girls' room every morning and make the little girls give them their milk money before they'd let them go to the bathroom.
Belle, Johns little sister, unfortunately, was a slow learner. Her daddy had brought her a package of Twinkies, and she was so proud that as soon as she got on the school bus, she forgot every-thing she knew and yelled to another first grader, "Guess what I got in my lunch today, Billy?”
“What?”
“Twinkies!”she shouted so loud that you could have heard her in the back seat even if you were deaf in both ears. Out of the corner of his eye, John thought he saw Janice brighten up.
When they sat down, Belle was still talking about her Twinkies loudly. "My daddy brought them to me from Washington.”
John threw another look at the back seat. “You better shut up about those Twinkies”he said in her ear. “You just jealous(嫉妒的) because Daddy did bring you none.” “OK.” He turned to Tom to say, “warned her, didn’t I ? and Tom nodded back.
Neither of them was too surprised to see Belle come screaming toward them at rest time. “She stole my Twinkies!”John sighed. “Belle, didn't I tell you?”
