Pop singers, actors and sports stars are not the only ones today’s teenagers seek to imitate. It turns out that the legendary American poet Emily Dickinson (1830—1886) has a sincere following among many young people.

She may seem a curious choice for teenage devotion. Many might think of Emily Dickinson as someone locked away from the world, a spinster (未婚女性) living and writing in her bedroom as if she were in a self-made prison. In a way, though, many teens are just like this. Uncertain and a little afraid of the approaching world of adulthood, it seems safer to many to keep to oneself.

It turns out that Emily Dickinson wasn’t quite like this. A new exhibition at the Morgan Library in New York is encouraging a different perspective on the poet. The designer of the show, Carolyn Vega, told the BBC that while it is true that Dickinson liked to keep herself to herself, she also took a great interest in life beyond the front door of her father’s house in Amherst, Massachusetts.

According to Vega, Dickinson was deeply connected to her world through family, friendships, and literary mentors and editors. She also read many books and was aware of the political realities that were going on around her, including the American Civil War.

The title of the New York exhibition, “I’m nobody! Who are you?”,from one of her poems, tells us a little about Dickinson’s approach to life and writing. She seemed to have thought, “The less I am to myself, the more interesting the world will become.” And when reading a large number of the 1,800 poems she wrote, the world seems just like that a place we thought we knew, but which Dickinson represents to us in a brand new way.

A.Dickinson didn’t want to be famous.
B.Dickinson is not a productive poet.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了Siwa绿洲的农民克服地理环境上的困难,用智慧和努力在沙漠上种甜椰枣的故事。

【推荐1】To grow sugary dates in the sand, Siwa’s farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. As an oasis (绿洲) in Egypt, Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years. Since ancient times, the oasis has had farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians, tables.

The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plant, to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural (农业的) fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony (和谐). That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first move away the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.

To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to grow up, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa gets more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.

The dates can be eaten fresh, or made dry. Every part of the date tree is important in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then, of course, there’s the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil, and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.

Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even harder.

1. What can we learn about sugary dates from paragraph 1 ?
A.They have existed for a long time.
B.They prefer the desert environment.
C.They’re introduced to Egypt from abroad.
D.They’re the most valuable fruit in Egypt.
2. What impressed the author a lot during his visit to Siwa?
A.The great variety of plants grown there.
B.The hard but happy life of local people.
C.The difficulty in developing the local agriculture.
D.The farmers’ wisdom and contribution to farming.
3. What do the figures mentioned in paragraph 3 show?
A.It is easy to pick dates from the trees.
B.It is worth the effort to plant date trees.
C.It costs a lot to grow date trees in the oasis.
D.It is necessary to develop agriculture in Siwa.
4. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?
A.Improved.B.Died.
C.Became expensive.D.Remained unique.

【推荐2】My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn't fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn't get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial (商业广告), a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this method would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

1. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?
A.He got an older model than he had expected.
B.He could have bought it at a lower price.
C.He couldn't return it when it was broken.
D.He failed to find any movie shows on it.
2. Which of the following can best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1?
A.changed to commercials.B.provided fewer channels.
C.ended all their programs.D.showed all-night movies.
3. How did the author finally get this TV set working again?
A.By shaking and hitting it.B.By having it repaired.
C.By switching channels.D.By turning it on and off.
4. How does the author sound when telling the story?
A.Humorous.B.Nervous.
C.Careful.D.Curious.

3】Lunar New Year used to be a daylong celebration for us. My parents tried really hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year’s day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes, gathered at my grandma’s house. Kids were pulled out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.

Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids have grown up and are living their own life. The Lunar New Year celebration is no longer elaborate as it used to be. As we melt into American culture, the “olden ways”, as we call them, have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing.

For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and customs of our parents’. They don’t mean as much to us as they do for them. At the same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realized that the diaspora (流散) of young Asian American in the United Sates is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin color do not entirely define who I am. I am as much a “hamburger” guy as a “rice” individual. I can’t quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian, there isn’t really a check box that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.

I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for the first time, I’ve hung up Lunar New Year decorations around the house and replaced our Christmas wreath (花环) on the front door with decorative firecrackers. In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.

1. What do we know about the author’s family in Paragraph 1?
A.They lived a very hard life in America.B.They respected the old and loved the young.
C.They stuck to the traditions of Lunar New Year.D.They paid little attention to children’s education.
2. What does the underlined word “elaborate” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.carefully prepared and organizedB.extremely simple and easy
C.unbelievable and ridiculousD.humorous and appealing
3. Why does the author mention “hamburger” and “rice” in Paragraph 3?
A.To suggest various choices.B.To indicate diverse identities.
C.To clarify different customs.D.To compare personal tastes.
4. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.We should strengthen family bonds.B.We are what we choose to be.
C.Passing down family traditions matters.D.Knowing yourself is a lifelong process.
