Snowy weather can be beautiful especially when you are inside looking out. When bad weather happens in Canadian cities like Victoria on Vancouver Island, many workplaces close. Necessary places like hospitals must remain open and that’s where the snow angels come in. Almost 100 people volunteer their time to drive hundreds of health workers to their jobs. They are members of the VI Toyota 4×4 group whose vehicles are set up for snow driving with bigger tires(轮胎)that can make them through deeper snow.
The 4×4 group volunteered to drive workers when there was a heavy snow in 2019. Afterwards, they started a Facebook page and that’s where the work rides are coordinated(协调). When a large snowstorm was due to hit earlier in January 2020, the group reached out to Island Health — the publicly funded health care provider — to say that they were ready to spring into action.
The volunteers were really happy to give a helping hand. “While there were no charges for the service, people were donating money for gas and giving us delicious homemade baked food,” the driver Shelby Newcombe said. “I’ve been running from Sooke all the way to Saanich Peninsula Hospital and anywhere in between. I’ve been driving all walks of life, from doctors to housekeeping staff, and have met people that I normally wouldn’t have.”
The snow angels say their goal is to make sure that all the patients at Island’s hospitals are taken care of and that’s why they do their part. Having people that are giving back to their communities is part of what makes this Victoria rank in the top twenty of the world’s cities for quality of life even when it snows.

【推荐1】This year, high school students in Chicago are feeling upset for the loss of graduation ceremonies (毕业典礼) and everyday joys because of COVID-l9. The best way to deal with your sadness and feel useful to your community is to volunteer online. Here are three ways you can offer help.
Online Volunteers
Becoming an online volunteer for the Red Cross can allow teenagers to make a contribution in the hard time. This can involve actions like sharing the Red Cross content across social media or organizing an online donation. Points of Light, an online volunteer service organization, can offer you a lot of jobs including writing letters to health care workers, or organizing food donations for needy families in your area.
Online Teachers
Children from poor families have suffered great educational losses during COVID-19. Teensgive.com allows students many chances to teach children under 12 online. Schoolonwheels.com allows students aged 16-18 to provide teaching services to children above 12 through the Internet. Those aged 12-15 can also volunteer for Subjectlover.com, but must be accompanied (陪同) by a parent. Learntobe.com is a place for connecting college helpers and children in need online.
Online Translators
If you can speak two languages, there are plenty of ways in which you can help just right from your computer. Some communities need some COVID-19-related papers translated from English to French. You could offer your help. You could also consider joining the army of TED Talk translators who work on subtitling (添加字幕) the videos. A number of chances can also be reached through Translators Without Borders.
During this hard time, you can start where you are, use what you have and do what you can to make a difference.

In keeping with the traditional family hierarchy(等级制度), my grandfather had the honor of naming me. He chose Xiǎoxiá which means “early morning light”—the time of my birth. “Xiá also shares the same character as Dānxiá Mountain, referring to the place where I was born.”
But my parents didn’t like the name. They thought it sounded dull and it didn’t resonate with their expectations for me. As the eldest son, my dad performed his right to name me next, naming me Chénshī. The two characters together mean “an early morning poem.” It reflects a saying in China: There is bread and butter in life, but also poems and dreams. But in the Hakka dialect spoken by my family, the name sounded like the phrase for “a floating dead body.”
On the third day after my birth, my mom decided on Shūrán. It stuck. My name means nature, comfort, and harmony. It means to go with the flow. She knew that I, as the only child, would carry the expectations of both sides of our families on my tiny shoulders and it would be difficult not to feel crushed by the weight of those expectations. Like my dad, she hoped that I would be able to freely pursue my dreams. She wanted me to become an independent and strong woman just like her.
A month after I was born, she wrote an acrostic poem about my name and her wishes for me:
A DIARY FOR MY DAUGHTER’S NAME
As an ancestor of the Yellow Emperor
Shuran follows the flow with a clear mind and bright eyes
She will become beautiful and look just like Xī Shí
When she grows up, she will be a great success and do great things

He begged his mother for months for a guitar so that he could play songs to Angie, a girl he liked, but after he finally got one for Christmas, he found out that guitars didn’t play themselves. He took a few lessons, but the strings hurt his fingers, so now the five-hundred dollar guitar lives under his bed.
After reading an ad in the back of one of his comic books, Jacob decided that he wanted a metal detector (探测器), so that he could find buried treasure. By the time spring came he had saved $200 and purchased the metal detector. He beeped it around the park for a while, but soon found out that no one had ever left any treasure in his neighborhood. He buried the metal detector in his closest.
Given Jacob’s history with hobbies, it was no surprise that Jacob’s father was unwilling to buy him a magician’s kit (魔术包) for his birthday. “Dad, this time I’ll stick with it for real. I promise!” Jacob begged. Jacob’s father sighed. But he was reminded of his own youth long ago, when he quit football and started boxing practice before hardly getting his equipment dirty. So when Jacob’s birthday came around, he was both surprised and pleased to find the magician’s kit that he had desired so badly. As Jacob continued pulling plastic thumbs and giant playing cards out of the kit, an ad on the TV caught his attention.
“Hey kids! Have you ever wanted to go to space? For only $195 you can go to space camp and live life like an astronaut for a whole weekend!” As the ad continued playing, Jacob walked away from the magic kit and stared at the TV screen eagerly. Jacob’s cry rang throughout the house as he yelled, “MOM!” He now knew what his true purpose in life was.

Now, I am Bo to her and close friends. Although I have been Bo to my mother all my life, I recently discovered that my true name is not on my birth certificate; it’s the name that is as unique and memorable as I am.
People usually know me as Christine. They still see me as a quiet, bookish child. They don’t know who I am now. My most recent hopes, fears, goals, dreams and opinions escape their notice; it is easier to think of me as I was. In their minds, they have a box labeled “Christine” in which I fit neatly, and as Christine, I was content with the perfect packaging.
Those who call me Bo or Bo-Bee really know me. They remember who I was and realize I have changed. The Bo I am is ever-changing, ever-growing and ever-learning.
When I was Christine, I was quiet, and easily scared. I feared groups, meeting new people and sharing my opinions. I was more comfortable with a book than my best friend. As Christine, I thought everyone was better than I was.
As Bo, I still love my books, but I want to discuss them. As Bo, my dream is to live where I can experience new things and meet new people. I dream about being alone on a stage lit by a single spotlight; I have that confidence now. I am equal to those I once saw as better than me.
I can’t always be Bo. Sometimes exposing myself is still scary and I feel too nervous; I want to hide in those old boxes. Mostly, however, I am ready for the world. So, just call me Bo.

Environmental science student Lucy Dunton said she got the idea from designer and maker Dave Hakkens' video on Facebook. Mr. Hakkens is from the Netherlands and posts videos about how to make things out of waste plastics on social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.
“We're really interested in doing something, changing the way people think and creating this amazing community, to share skills and advice and connect with like-minded people,” she said. “Plastics can be used to make useful, everyday things as a way to fight plastic pollution. We want to encourage and support those who have started or want to start their own project, by acting as guides and sharing advice and resources.”The group is growing as others put their hands up to offer their time, skills and resources through the website and join the group.
Environmental science student Aiden Ryan worked with mechanical engineer Luke Christiansen to build the team's compressor (压缩机) in Luke's Dad's storeroom at Holdfast Bay, South Australia. They're now collecting parts for a shredder, so they can stop cutting plastics by hand. Raw materials come from organized beach cleans. They take their collection of plastics back to the storeroom where they are turned into new plastic products such as bowls and plates.
“A bowl could be made out of 10 reusable plastic containers,”Mr. Ryan said. He hopes to start selling the new plastic products soon.
Nic Wipf-Grant, one of the founders of Precious Plastic SA, says it is part of the growing sharing economy.“We want neighbours to share skills with neighbours,” he said. “We want neighbours to bring their plastics over and make bowls, plates and iPhone covers as gifts for their family and friends.”

Many of the relatives of the 39 people who died in the freezing, airless vehicle are too poor to bring the bodies back to Vietnam.
Ten of the 39 victims were from the Can Loc district of Ha Tinh province, where Bui Huy Cuong is deputy chairman of the people's committee. He told the Guardian Newspaper that officials have visited bereaved(新近丧失亲人的) families to encourage them to receive ashes, instead of bodies, because it would be cheaper. But he said families want bodies so they can be honored in traditional funerals and are hoping the authorities will pay. "At the moment, we are not sure if the British or the Vietnamese government will take responsibility for bringing victims back to Vietnam, " he said. "Families know nothing about it. '' Pham Thi Tra My was the victim who came to prominence when her final text home was made public in which she said, "I'm sorry, Mum. My journey abroad has not succeeded. Mum, I love you so much I'm dying because I can't breathe. ”
Nguyen Dinh Gia, the father of another victim, Nguyen Dinh Luong, from Nghe An province, said his family also wants a body. He said villagers have been visited by local authorities but do not understand their options. “They did not tell me how much the transport fee is, but told us 让's costly …so it's easier to bring back ashes instead of the body," he said. “I said we are asking for help from two governments ... We've had to wait for many days now and are falling into depression.”

However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, then you'd better save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) states that “whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.

The United American Indians of New England call the national holiday a National Day of Mourning. They will mark the day in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the place where some of North America's first European settlers landed. Organizers describe the event as a time to remember “the genocide (种族灭绝) of millions of native people, the theft of native lands and the attack on native culture.”
Native American groups have been holding the National Day of Mourning since 1970. But they say their message is especially urgent now. That is because the town of Plymouth is getting ready to hold a number of events marking the settlers' arrival. The original settlers, known as the pilgrims (清教徒), first landed in the Native Americans' land, which is now Massachusetts, nearly 400 years ago. As the anniversary nears, the native people whose ancestors met the pilgrims want to make sure the world hears the whole story. The Wampanoag tribe helped the European settlers survive. Its members say the settlers brought diseases, racism and oppression.
On November 28, 2019, people Taking part in the National Day of Mourning gathered on Cole's Hill. The hill overlooks Plymouth Rock, a memorial to the colonists' arrival. The area also has a large statue of the Wampanoag leader in 1620. At the gathering, Native Americans from tribes around New England beat drums, offered prayers and read speeches. Then they marched through the streets of Plymouth joined by like-minded supporters.
Organizers said that the marchers called attention to the situation of missing and murdered native women. They also noted government action on migrants from Latin America and the detention (拘留) of children.
Paula Peter is a Wampanoag writer and activist. Peters sees progress in how Americans think about their history. They are starting to look past the false Thanksgiving story about pilgrims and natives living peacefully together, she says, She adds that the work of native groups continues to honor their ancestors. They are taking their history out of the margins and moving it to the center of attention.

Through the streets of Bellingham he went, heading south on Washington 11, running along the coast of Puget Sound for a few miles, then following the highway as it swung east a little before meeting U.S Route 20.
Turning into the sun, he began the long, winding drive through the Cascades. He liked this country and felt unpressed stopping now and then to make notes about interesting possibilities for future expeditions or to shoot what he called “memory snapshots.” The purpose of these causal photographs was to remind him of places he might want to visit again and approach more seriously. In later afternoon he turned north at Spokane, picking up U.S. Route 2, which would take him halfway across the northern United States to Duluth, Minnesota.
He wished for the thousandth time in his life that he had a dog, a golden retriever, maybe ,for travels like this and to keep him company at home. But he was frequently away; overseas much of the time and it would not be fair to the animal. Still, he thought about it anyway. In a few years he would be getting too old for the hard fieldwork. “I must get a dog then.” He said to himself.
Drives like this always put him into a sentimental mood. The dog was part of it. Robert Kincaid was alone as it’s possible to be—an only child, parents both dead, distant relatives who had lost track of him and he of them, no close friends.
He thought about Marian. She had left him nine years ago after five years of marriage. He was fifty-two now, that would make her just under forty. Marian had dreams of becoming a musician, a folksinger. She knew all of the Weavers’ songs and sang them pretty well in the coffeehouse of Seattle. When he was home in the old days, he drove her to the shows and sat in the audience while she sang.
His long absences—two or three months sometimes—were hard on the marriage. He knew that. She was aware of what he did when they decided to get married, and both of them had a vague sense that it could all be handled somehow. It couldn’t when he came from photographing a story in Iceland and she was gone. The note read, “Robert, it didn’t work out. I left you the Harmony guitar. Stay in touch.”
He didn’t stay in touch. Neither did she. He signed the divorce papers when they arrived a year later and caught a plane for Australia the next day. She had asked for nothing except her freedom.
