The Beijing Natural History Museum was the first large-scale natural history museum in China after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is a large natural history museum focusing on specimen (标本) collection, research and education in the fields of paleontology（古生物学), animals, plants and anthropologyn(人类学).
The museum houses a collection of more than 270,000 zoological and other specimens. Permanent displays can be found in the Halls of Paleontology, Zoology, Botany and Mankind Evolution(进化). Its spacious galleries contain some fine specimens of fossils including various invertebrates (无脊椎动物), mammals, early humans, reptiles, dinosaur skeletons and eggs excavated in China. It also contains a large collection of minerals, as well as a fantastic display of naturally carved and polished stones used in the traditional Chinese art of miniature rockery(假山).
The Hall of Paleontology features fossils from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras, forming a wordless chronicle of prehistoric life that flourished (繁荣) between 1 and 500 million years ago. Among the exhibits are a 22-meter Mamenxi dinosaur fossil which is 140 million years old, a flying Yi dinosaur and a swimming Yu dinosaur.

【推荐1】Strange ice rings in Siberia’s Lake Baikal have puzzled scientists for decades, but now the mystery apparently has been solved. The answer: the rings are caused by warm, circular currents of water under the ice, called eddies (漩涡).
The eddies’ strong currents melt the ice at the edge, but weaker ones keep the center frozen. “Results of our field surveys show that there are warm eddies that circulate in a clockwise (顺时针的) direction under the ice cover,” said Alexei Kouraev, a hydrologist at the University of Toulouse, in a NASA statement. “In the eddy center, the ice does not melt — even though the water is warm — because the currents are weak,” he said. “But on the eddy boundary, the currents are stronger, and warmer water leads to rapid melting.”
During field work, Kouraev and his colleagues drilled holes near ice rings and set sensors capable of measuring the temperature and salinity (盐浓度) of the water to a depth of 700 feet. They found that the water in the eddies was 2 to 4 ℉ warmer than the surrounding water.
Most of the rings appear in March or April and have a width of about 3 to 4 miles — too big to recognize from the ground but easily seen from satellites above. Some rings were ephemeral while others lasted for weeks or even months.
Lake Baikal is the world’s largest and deepest freshwater lake, according to Gizmodo. It’s home to many varieties of fish not seen anywhere else in the world, and even a population of freshwater seals.
Researchers are still investigating what causes Baikal’s eddies but think it’s likely because of wind patterns, rivers that flow into the lake and the shape of the lake’s coastline and bottom.

A female olm might lay eggs just once every six years. Excitement over the possibility of new babies started in January, when the first egg was spotted deep within the Postojna Cave in Slovenia. In the end, with the help of scientists, 22 olms were born between May 30 and July 14. They are now growing into healthy teenage dragons.
Olms live in underwater limestone caves in Central Europe. These caves are difficult to reach, so scientists don’ t often get to observe olms in their natural habitat.
Olms, which can grow to be up to 16 inches long, are one of the largest cave animals in the world. They have pale skin and long snouts and their tiny eyes are fully covered with skin.
No natural light reaches these deep caves, so many animals that live there cannot see. But olms use their incredible senses of smell and hearing to hunt worms, crabs, and snails. Olms can also survive without food for long periods of time, even as long as 10 years.
When a female olm laid 64 eggs in the Postojna Cave last winter, scientists thought that only two or three of them would survive. In the wild, only about two baby olms successfully hatch from 500 eggs. The last time a female olm laid eggs at the Postojna Cave, none of the eggs hatched. So this time, scientists worked very hard to care for the olm eggs and watched over them as they grew. About one-third of the 64 baby olms survived, and they appear to be doing well.
Scientists are hopeful about the babies’ future. Although baby olms don’ t eat for the first couple of months, by August three of the oldest babies were eating worms. That was an important step in their development.
“We will keep doing everything we possibly can to ensure the olms’ well-being,” a press statement for the team stated.

Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S.
We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for an on-the -road version of TALK2US. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India.
