Memo
To, All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sport1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sport 2: Gym
We will be using St Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00pm.Second, it has a lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sport 3: Hiking
Hiking (远足) will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sport 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school.Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e.2:45pm to 3: 45 pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

B.Students selecting basketball had better register early. |
C.Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts two hours. |

I was nine years old when she entered our home in the countryside of Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm.”
That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart, My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county seat, where my father’s career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn’t the only beneficiary. My father became the wealthiest man in town. This means that the public has the right to communicate with and receive services from federal(联邦的)government institutions in either English or French. Federal government employees have the right to work in the official language of their choice in bilingual regions.
Like the United States, Canada started as a colony. Beginning in the 1500s, it was part of New France but later became a British colony after the Seven Years' War. As a result, the Canadian government officially recognized the languages of both colonizers: France and England. The Constitution(宪法)Act of 1867 legally accepts the use of both languages in federal courts. Years later, Canada strengthened its commitment to bilingualism when it passed the Official Languages Act of 1969, which restated the constitutional origins of its co-official languages and set out the protections afforded by its dual-language status.
Recognition of both English and French protects the rights of all Canadians. Among other benefits, the 1969 Act recognized that Canadian citizens should be able to access federal laws and government documents, whether their native language was French or English. The general law also requires that consumer products feature bilingual packaging throughout the country.
The Canadian federal government is committed to advancing the equality of status and use of the English and French languages, within Canadian society. However, the reality is that some Canadians speak English, and of course, some Canadians speak the other language entirely.
Although the federal government theoretically guarantees bilingual services in all areas, there are many regions of Canada where English is the clear majority language, so the local government does not always seek services in French in those regions. Canadians use the phrase "where numbers warrant" to determine whether a local population's language usage requires bilingual services from the federal government.
While many Canadians are bilingual, they are not only speaking English or French. Statistics Canada finds that more than 200 languages that were not English or French, were reported as a language spoken by its people. About two-thirds of the respondents who spoke one of these languages also spoke either English or French.
1. The acceptance of two official languages in Canada is due to______________.A.the language-using tradition caused by Canada's colonial history |
B.the convenience for business dealings by using two languages in the country |
C.the welcome attitude toward immigrates from all over the world. |
D.the mastery of two languages of Canadians because of school education |
A.the legal order from the federal government |
B.the popularity of the language in the world |
C.the number of schools teaching the language |
D.the number of local people using the language |
A.English has gained superior legal position to French because of bigger number of users in Canada. |
B.The legal court usage of French and English was established in Canada in 1969. |
C.Both French and English should be used on products in Canada according to federal law. |
D.Canadian people speak either French or English in social communication. |
A.The advantages of using multiple languages in Canada. |

It's a scene from a famous TV series, when at a very important moment the 67-year-old Jack ran back into the family's burning house to save his daughter's dog He later died from cardiac arrest(心脏停搏) caused by taking in too much smoke.
After all that is not real, some might think. But similar stories are not difficult to find, in which the pet owners paid the ultimate price for saving their pets.
Recently, a 61-year-old Florida man was hit by a train with his dog after running out to save it from the railway. One month earlier, a woman in California died in the flames of a wildfire while trying to rescue her dog from a car. And in Texas after a hurricane, a 25-year-old man died from an electric shock after trying to save his sister's cat from her flooded home.
There have been many studies on humans attachment to pets, and there have been results associating health benefits with caring for animals. According to those studies, owning a pet can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress and relieve anxiety or depression.
According to one survey of American Pet Products Association, about 68 percent of the US families own a pet. And of all the pet owners, about 95 percent consider their pets part of the family.
1. What happened to the old man in paragraph 1?A.He saw a tragedy last week. |

C.He lost his life as a result of saving his dog. |
D.He joined a growing list of courageous pet owners in an activity. |
A.comparing | B.giving examples | C.analyzing | D.giving a definition |
A.Jack's death was a result of heat in the smoke. |
B.There aren't other pet owners who choose to do the same as Jack in real life. |
C.Humans shouldn't take the risk of saving their pets. |
D.There is scientific evidence that having a pet is good for people's health. |
