Big Read Tucson will center around two books: “Postcolonial Love Poem”, a poetry collection by Natalie Diaz, and the children’s book “We Are Water Protectors”, written by Carole Lindstrom and illustrated by Michaela Goade.
“We decided to center Big Read Tucson around water because of the importance of water to our region,” said Sandra Soto, director of Big Read Tucson. “A primary reason that we selected Diaz’s book is because so many of the poems feature water, the scarcity(缺乏) of which Diaz feels in a spiritual and urgent way.”
“Postcolonial Love Poem”received a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2021. “Natalie Diaz’s book provides an unusually rich opportunity to create locally meaningful, shared reading experiences,” said Soto. “Diaz’s poetic sensibility is largely shaped by her experiences growing up on the border of California, Arizona and Nevada. Her references and landscapes will be recognizable and important to Tucson readers.”
“We Are Water Protectors” won the 2021 Caldecott Medal and is available in both English and Spanish. “Like Diaz’s work, this book addresses the importance of water,” Soto said. “It is accessible to readers and educates young people about the necessity to protect water on behalf of animals, humans, plants and the earth.”
On Jan. 14, Big Read Tucson will kick off with an outdoor celebration, including readings, and book giveaways, at Mission Garden, a living agricultural museum at 946 W. Mission Lane.
The event will be followed by presentations of “Postcolonial Love Poem” and “We Are Water Protectors”and multiple book discussions at various yet-to-be determined locations, including high school classrooms and libraries.
“Over the three months, we will host many interactive events, all with the aim of generating firsthand experiences with the imaginative power of literature and the pleasure of collective discussion,” Soto said.

The app doesn't limit how many languages you can try to learn at the same time, or how many lessons you can complete in one day, even on the free version. I use Duolingo to keep up with Spanish and German. It's an easy app because it doesn't require you to create an account right away.
For example, even if you start with little to no understanding of Spanish, the lessons are pretty gentle. You'll choose which picture- paired with the Spanish translation- accurately describes basic phrases and words. Duolingo translates from English to Spanish and back again. Most questions let you tap or click on the Spanish word to translate it in case you get stuck. The app offers additional learning resources if you click the lightbulb icon, as well as the ability to fast-track your lessons if you click the key icon.
Duolingo's “streak” feature motivates you to keep up with your language learning efforts by tracking the number of days you've reached your point goal. It can also make it feel like your world is crashing in if you lose an 80-day streak. Resources such as Duolingo Stories, which are short audio stories that allow you to check your comprehension skills as you are available online and in the apps. Duolingo also has a podcast that reiterates the lessons you've completed.
You can also subscribe to Premium for $10 per month, which gives you access to an experimental feature that lets you chat with a language tutor from a country where the language is spoken. This isn't available for all Duolingo Plus subscribers though.

When I was a boy, in the 1980s, we communicated by telephone. I never wrote a single word to anybody my own age, except to pass notes in class when I was bored. The Internet and the mobile phone have changed all that, and put a new emphasis (强调) on the written word.
Written words are important now. Everything, especially for the young, depends on them. Online chatting and searching, messaging and emailing, all depend on writing, and writing quickly. There is no time now for thinking about the right phrase carefully or planning the best way to say something before you make that phone call, that text and that e-mail demanding an exigent response.
The important difference between writing and speaking is that writing can be crossed out (划掉), whereas speech cannot. Communication is now a continuous work in progress, as long as it’s done on screen, and as long as you delete it before anyone reads it. Instead of technology having made the accuracy of spelling and grammar irrelevant, the move from the spoken to the written word has had the opposite effect: we judge accuracy severely, whether it be a romantic message or a job application, and are unimpressed by people who don’t know how to use punctuation (标点符号).
Glancing around the Internet, you can find examples of terrible English, but you’ll also find an astonishing number of corrections.
There has probably never been a time in history when writing has been so universal (普遍) and so important. Books on the English language can now top the bestseller lists. Today, the Philippines holds the record for texting: 27 per user per day, In Scandinavia, more than 85 per cent of the population communicates by text, Some 294 billion e mail messages are sent every day. These are communications that until recently were made by telephone, letter, face to face or, and this is highly important in the communication debate, not at all.

A.It is judged seriously. | B.It spreads quickly. |

B.It makes the written word popular again. |

Zagar devoted himself to beautifying the South Street neighborhood in the late 1960s, when he moved to the area with his wife Julia. The couple helped the area by purchasing and repairing some old buildings, often adding colorful mosaics on both their private and public walls. The first such project was Julia's still-busy folk art store, the Eyes Gallery at 402 South Street.
Zagar started working on the Magic Gardens in 1994 in the deserted parking lot near his studio. He spent the next fourteen years sculpting multi-layered walls and decorating the 3, 000 square foot space. The installation(装置艺术),primarily consisting of found objects and contributions from the community, finally covers half a city block with countless patterns and colors. It shows Zagar's many artistic influences, as well as the events and experiences of his life.
In 2002,the owner of the once-unused parking lot decided to sell the land in response to rising South Street property values. Unwilling to witness the destruction of Zagar's neighborhood art environment, the community rushed to support the artist. His creation, newly titled Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, turned into a nonprofit organization with the intention of preserving and promoting Zagar's works at the site of the Magic Gardens and throughout the South Street region.
The Magic Gardens is now a permanent art institution that is open to visitors throughout the year. Trained guides are available to lead tours of the Magic Gardens and Zagar's surrounding public wall paintings. In addition, it offers monthly mosaic workshops led by Zagar himself, and regularly hosts concerts, dance performances, and other public events.

It met the EU 2020 target of recycling 50%of waste many years ago. But almost everyone who lives here follows a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons(纸板箱)and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code.
The reason for this becomes clear at the city’s recycling plant. The bags arrive all jumbled up because they’re collected altogether in a rush, once a fortnight from outside people’s houses. But thanks to those bright colors, scanners can select the bags and separate them efficiently. The food waste in green bags is processed on site into a certain thick liquid to make burnable gas, which powers the city’s buses. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution, so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things. Like the rest of Sweden,Eskilstuna is committed to sending zero waste from its citizens to landfill. Waste that cannot be recycled is burnt at a local plant to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, but does create greenhouse gases.
As countries around the world try to improve their recycling rates, some may look to Eskilstuna as an example to follow as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get busy sorting at home.

The timber-framed home in Great Glen, Leicestershire, contains a number of “zero-carbon features” including solar electric energy, triple glazing and rainwater storage. It is entirely heated by underground water-filled tubes that are warmed by solar energy from rooftop panels. The house was designed and built by Caplin Homes and covers two acres of land. The design and construction, down to the materials, were used specifically for their low carbon footprint.
The solar panels on the roof of the five-bedroom house are called hybrids because they collect both electrical and thermal energy. Solar walls preheat incoming air, and an Earth Energy Bank (EEB) and heat pump can store heat, and get it back for use when temperatures drop. The south-facing triple-glazed windows are said to also improve the house’s energy management during the winter.
All the technologies are regulated by a control system, which monitors the inside and outside temperatures, how much energy is being received by the solar panels, and the heat levels in the EEB domestic hot water tank. Due to its low energy design, the Solar House is expected to only require heat from the EEB for about 10 weeks of the year.
For £1.2 million, buyers also get two garages. Estate agent (房地产经纪人) Anthony Fox said the possibility of no utility bills was a big draw for potential owners: the idea is that your bills pretty much disappear and the house is self-sustaining and self-sufficient. That was a big aspect for most of the people who came to have a look around. “We had a lot of interest on the open day. There were some strong considerations to buy there and then. Everyone was very keen to learn how the house worked.” He added.
