It was a battle of power, as China’s Zhang Weili took on Polish competitor Joanna Jedrzejczyk in what is being called one of the greatest fights in women’s MMA history. People had high expectations for this match — and their expectations were met. On March 7, 2020, Zhang Weili beat Jedrzejczyk in Las Vegas, successfully defending (蝉联) her strawweight UFC title (草量级终极格斗赛冠军).
Both women are known as top fighters. Zhang, 30, won China’s first and only UFC belt last year in Shenzhen. Jedrzejczyk, 32, is a former five-time defending champion in the 115-pound group.
But this year’s novel coronavirus outbreak (新冠疫情爆发) made Zhang’s training harder than usual. She had to travel from Beijing to Thailand and then to Abu Dhabi before arriving in Las Vegas, about a week later than planned. Worse still, before the match, Zhang was annoyed by social media post by Jedrzejczyk. In a picture, Jedrzejczyk wears a gas mask (防毒面具) standing behind Zhang, making fun of the outbreak. The picture caused criticism and later disappeared. Zhang said she was fired up to make Jedrzejczyk pay for the tasteless joke in the competition.
Zhang’s considerable punching power (重拳) gave her the early advantage as the pair traded in the first and second rounds. However, as a former five-time defending champion, Jedrzejczyk used her greater experience and changed her style, catching Zhang with huge kicks to the face and body to win Round Three. Going into the championship rounds, despite looking the more tired, Zhang again caught her competitor with well-timed counter punches, winning her first title defence. In the end, Zhang scored a narrow win over Jedrzejezyk in the fight. Both ended up in the hospital because of the fight.
“All fighters deserve respect from one another in the competition, ” said Zhang following her victory. “Now the situation is not just affecting China but the whole world. I hope everybody in the world can stand together to fight the virus with a united effort.” she said.

Normally when bands have a new album, they go on tour to promote (推销) the album. They may fly from country to country and drive across countries in buses, performing in concert after concert.
Touring is an important way singers and musicians earn money. But tours are very hard on the environment. Flying is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases. During their last tour, the band flew to five different continents and played 122 shows. They traveled with 109 supporting workers, 32 trucks, and 9 bus drivers. Think about the pollution from Coldplay’s flights as well as the trucks, buses and huge amounts of electricity required to power the shows!
It’s hard to keep track of the pollution a band creates while touring, but most of the environmental cost comes from the fans. During their last tour, Coldplay entertained 5.4 million fans, all of whom had to travel to the concerts and bought “merchandise” like T-shirts, CDs and posters. Some bought food and drinks at the concerts, creating tons of plastic waste.
Instead of touring to promote the new album, Coldplay recorded two videos of the band playing their new songs live in Jordan and has put the videos of their performances up for free viewing on YouTube.
Coldplay, one of whose dreams is to have a show with no single-use plastic and have it largely sun-powered, says it won’t tour again until its members work out how to make their tours help instead of hurt. The decision will cost the band a lot of money in the short run, but it could pay off big for the planet.

The New York Times’ Somini Sengupta reports that Arctic wildfires in June 2020 caused more pollution than the data (数据) that had been collected in the previous 18 years. Seasonal wildfires are common in Siberia, but this year’s fires are unusually widespread in part because of a climate change-driven heatwave. The Arctic is experiencing climate change-driven warming faster than the rest of the earth, which sets up the dry conditions that make fires spread.
“I was surprised to see a fire burning 10 kilometers south of a bay of the Laptev Sea, which is like, the sea ice factory of the world,” said fire researcher Jessica McCarty from Miami University in Ohio. “When I went into fire science as an undergraduate student, if someone had told me I’d be studying fire regimes (管强体制) in Greenland and the Arctic, I would have laughed at them.”
This June’s Arctic fires beat the pollution record set in 2019, said Mark Parrington, who works with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service tracking worldwide wildfires. Some of the fires may have spent the winter months smoldering (闷燃) only to grow again in warmer weather. And the weather has certainly gotten warmer. In June, a Russian town above the Arctic circle called Verkhoyansk hit a high temperature of 100,4 degrees Fahrenheit.
The current situation in the Arctic circle shows that previous predictions (预测) “underestimate what is going on in reality,” earth scientist Vladmir Romanovsky sold. He added that temperature observation in the High Arctic made in the last 15 years weren’t expected for another seventy years.
Millions of acres of land are on fire this wildfire season. Most of the wildfires are located in Siberia’s Sakha Republic, which sees wildfires frequently, but fires are also spreading further north and into unusual ecosystems, like those that are characterized by permafrost (永冻土).

Not only because of her flawless performance, but also for the innocence she displayed while speaking with the media. Quan said her dream is to save enough money to treat her sick mother, buy snacks, and go to an entertainment park and a zoo.
Were it not for the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, Quan would not have participated in the Games as she only joined the national team last year. Quan is the third child of her parents who live in a village in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. The city of Zhanjiang has been a cradle of elite Chinese divers through the years, producing the likes of Lao Lishi, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games, and He Chong, who ranked first at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

But she was unhappy and unsatisfied to be the only Indigenous (土著的) comic on the bill most nights — and it didn’t take long for her to grow tired of being the “token (象征性的) one.” Niles loved the comedian Kenny Robinson’s long-running, all-Black Yuk Yuk’s Toronto set, “Nubian Show”, and wondered, “Well, where’s ours?”
