China plans to complete the construction of a space station and have    1    put into operation around 2022, said Zhou Jianping, the chief designer of China's manned space program, at a forum (论坛)    2    (hold) in south China's Guangdong Province. The space station,    3    could be enlarged if needed,    4    (design) to weigh 100 tonnes and accommodate three astronauts, according to Zhou.

“The main goal of the construction or the space station is to enable China to become a country    5    (independent) mastering the technology for long term manned flight in near Earth space, and having the capacity to carry out long-term manned scientific    6     (experiment) in near Earth space and comprehensive development and utilization (利用) of space resources,"    7    (say) Zhou at the 4th China Summit Forum on Human Factors Engineering, which was held at SunYat-sen University from Saturday to Sunday.

The space station will be built as China’s main platform for space science research    8    the intention of mastering the technologies in constructing and    9    (operate) large space facilities, the technologies that guarantee life and health of astronauts who often fly in orbit, and the construction of a    10    (nation) space lab, according to Zhou.

By the end of the year, a 3D-printed bridge will be put to use in China for the first time.

Different     1     traditional bridges, its     2     (create) design doesn’t use reinforced concrete. It is made of a new material     3     (design) to weather rain and sun for     4     extended period, and that’s durable enough to meet national construction industry standards. If parts of the bridge become damaged, they can be   repaired     5     (separate).

The 15-meter-long footbridge in Shanghai,     6     will have service life of up to 30 years, will take 35 days to build, according to     7     (it) chief architect. The complex curved surfaces of the bridge can only be achieved by     8     (use) 3D printing technology. Based on laboratory testing, it can bear a load of 250 kilograms per square meter.

This isn’t the first time that a 3D-printed bridge     9     (make) in China. In July last year, Tongji University in Shanghai made the world’s first two 3D-printed pedestrian bridges.

10    , that pair of bridges was only built as a demonstration, and not for actual use.

Human memory is notoriously (众所周知地) unreliable. Even people with the sharpest facial recognition skills can only remember so much.

It’s tough to quantify how good a person is     1     remembering. No one really knows how many different faces someone can recall, for example, but various estimates tend to hover in the thousands – based on the number of acquaintances a person     2     have.

Machines aren’t limited this way. Give the right computer a massive database of faces, and it can process what it sees – then recognize a face it     3     (tell) to find – with remarkable speed and precision. This skill is     4     supports the enormous promise of facial-recognition software in the 21st century. It is also what makes contemporary surveillance (监控) systems so scary.

The thing is, machines still have limitations when it comes to facial recognition. And scientists are only just beginning to understand what those constraints are.     5     (figure) out how computers are struggling, researchers at the University of Washington created a massive database of faces – they call it MegaFace – and     6     (test) a variety of facial-recognition algorithms(算法) as they scales up in complexity. The idea was to test the machines on a database that included up to 1 million different images of nearly 7,000 different people – and not just a large database     7     (feature) a relatively small number of different faces, more consistent with what’s been used in other research.

As the databases grew, machine accuracy dipped across the board. Algorithms     8     were right 95% of the time when they were dealing with a 13,000-image database, for example, were accurate about 70% of the time when     9     (face) with 1 million images. That’s still pretty good, says one of the researchers, Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman. “Much better than we expected,” she said,

Machines also had difficulty adjusting for people who look a lot alike –either doppelgangers (长相极相似的人), whom the machine would have trouble       10     (identify) as two separate people, or the same person who appeared in different photos at different ages or in different lighting, whom the machine would incorrectly view as separate people.

In the Wake of Uber’s Fatal Accident

The first pedestrian death has led some to ask whether the industry is moving too fast to deploy the technology.

The autonomous-car industry faces closer scrutiny and criticism after a self-driving Uber car killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, in March. Full details of the accident are unclear,     1     the local police department issued a statement saying that a woman     2     (strike) fatally after walking in front of an Uber car travelling in self-driving mode. Uber says it is cooperating with a police investigation and has suspended testing of its self-driving vehicles.

It is the first time a self-driving vehicle     3     (kill) a pedestrian, and the event is already causing some to question the pace     4     the technology is moving. Besides Uber, dozens of companies, including     5     (establish) car makers and small startups, are rushing to test experimental self-driving vehicles and autonomous systems on roads. These efforts have received blessing from local governments     6     the technology seems so promising and a safety driver is usually behind the wheel as a backup.

It is widely argued by experts such as Philip Koopman that autonomous cars will eventually be safer drivers than the average person, because the vehicles don’t get distracted. However, proving that safety may be time-consuming and some say the technology is being deployed too quickly. At a time when many have praised the technology as ready for large-scale deployment, “this is clear proof     7     it is not yet the case,” says Bryan Reimer, a research scientist at MIT. “Until we understand the testing and deployment of these systems further, we need to take our time and work through the evolution of the technology,” he says.

The accident comes amid     8     seemed like rapid progress on self-driving technology and a push to loosen legal restrictions. Just days ago, Waymo, Uber, and others had urged the Congress     9     (pass) legislation that would pave the way for self-driving cars in the U.S. The accident will most likely slow the passage of that bill.

So far, the public has showed little sign of turning     10     the technology, even after such incidents. “I am not really sure this is going to lead to a public worry or backlash,” says Kambhampati. “Because honestly, I thought there would be more of a backlash after the Tesla accident.”
