Are You Sitting Comfortably?

The way that people sit in chairs is not just by chance. If you are sitting with your arms and legs swinging, it is probably a sign     1     you are relaxed and feeling comfortable. If you     2     (position) on the edge of the chair with your legs stretched before you and your feet crossed, it can signal lack of interest.

Here is an example: in a country where the rules of behavior in court were very strict, a witness in a trial sat as     3     (describe) above, with one of his huge boots put on top of     4     , wearing a big coat and his arms crossed in front of his body. The judge said: “ Sit up straight and take your coat off,       5     I’ll hold you in contempt of court.” The man sat up straight in no time when he realized that he risked       6    (fine).

When people go to the dentist or wait for a job interview, they might be seated on the edge of their chair with their feet together. If it’s a woman, she’ll probably be hugging her handbag. Body tension spreads and makes you feel short of breath. When you are in such a position, it is easy to lose your head and simply run away if things take a turn for the     7     (bad).

You don’t believe that people     8     learn to control their body language completely; they will lose control at some point or other.

Certain gestures or types of touching have different meanings in different cultures. Since non-verbal messages    1    (root)in culture, they can easily be misunderstood if either the sender or receiver is culturally unaware. Gestures or touching that Americans accept     2    normal may be inappropriate or taboo(忌讳的)in another culture,    3    (similar), we may feel put off or uncomfortable by    4    is acceptable in other cultures. Personal space also    5    (vary)depending on the culture.

Every gesture sends    6    message that is understood by those within the culture. For example, it is not uncommon for an American to gesture to someone, especially in a noisy room,    7    (use) a bent finger to call another person to come    8    (close). Among Americans this would be acceptable behavior, but to many Africans and Asians, this would be interpreted as    9    (polite)and rude, a way to call a dog. In a typical work setting, use of this gesture could result in the employee being insulted(冒犯)and the boss being confused about the employee's negative "attitude" without ever understanding the cause.

In the example above, neither party is wrong    10    at fault, but a cross-cultural misunderstanding does exist. Such a situation requires openness and trust that allow both of them to respect and explore the cultural differences.
