Zhang Yaping, a 32-year-old woman, was awarded a poverty-alleviation ( 扶贫) prize by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development earlier this year. Despite difficulty walking, she overcame poverty through her own effort and helped many people around her.
Born in Gansu province, in 1988, Zhang contracted polio (小儿麻痹症) at a young age, which affected her ability to walk. When she was a junior high school student, a traffic accident caused permanent injury to her father's leg. Zhang had to drop out of school to take care of her father and for several years, continued learning by herself. She was admitted into a secondary technical school in 2009.
After graduation, she decided to work in her hometown. “My brother and sister were quite young, and my mother couldn't take care of both of them as well as my disabled father, so I could not go far,” says Zhang.
She tried her hand at various jobs, but found it difficult because of her leg ailment. She then decided to grow crops in a large scale, inspired by other villagers.
“At the beginning, I didn't have enough money or labor, so I went to villagers' homes every day trying to persuade them to join me, as well as exploring every means to collect money.” says Zhang.
Although she enjoyed a good start to her farming career, it wasn't long before a landslide caused by heavy rain and an earthquake in 2017 resulted in heavy damage to her cooperative. “The loss just robbed me of my confidence to continue. However, it occurred to me that it was I who encouraged other villagers to join the cooperative. If I gave up, I would be lacking in my responsibilities to them,” recalled Zhang. Finally, Zhang Yaping found her resolve and restarted her business with the help of local government. The cooperative gradually developed into a large-scale operation, which has benefited 206 households. They bid farewell to poverty and led a prosperous life.
“In the future, I want to expand the scale of the cooperative, form my own brand, promote deep processing of our products and apply more technology in raising our livestock. Although I walk slowly and take longer to get where I am going, I believe that someday I will overtake many others,” says Zhang.

We stopped near the top of an off-path section that went through forests. I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.
I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. Just as I was regaining control, I ran into the trunk of a large tree.
It was like hitting a solid wall. The pain was instant. I knew immediately that my back was broken and quickly realized the situation could get very serious. Nobody would be coming past. There was no phone signal. It was snowing and cold. If I waited, I would probably be rescued eventually. But the chance of freezing to death before that happened was too high for me to risk staying put.
I tried to stand but fell down and almost blacked out with pain. I managed to get the board off from my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and used the board to slowly drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope.
It took about two hours before a skier found me and I got help. The mountain rescue team came, with my brother arriving shortly afterwards. I couldn’t feel my hands or my toes from the cold, but the relief at knowing I was safe was enormous.
A helicopter took me to hospital. I had broken one of my backbones, so I had an operation where the doctors inserted plates. The constant pain was huge, but it wasn’t as bad as seeing the pain and worry I put my family through.
The recovery road was tough, but I was lucky. Gradually, I was able to walk, then swim, then cycle and then run. I haven’t been back to the slopes yet, but it might happen someday—I will, however, be sticking to the paths.

I asked if I could sit in it and when I did, I put my left hand on the steering wheel and my right on the shifter. I said to myself, “It just feels right.”
Soon after, I started seeing billboards and print advertisements. Mazda’s motto for the new car was, “It just feels right.” Total coincidence (巧合). At the time, I was under contract (合约) to race with Ford Motor Co., and so I always had Ford cars. I didn’t need a new car, but I bought one anyway — a Miata from its very first model year.
There wasn’t anything like the Miata at the time — a new, small, two-seat convertible sports car. And this one hit every mark. It had cool style, it was affordable, it had durability (耐用), performance, and economy. I was living in South Florida and it was a perfect place to drive with the top down. The car loved to go fast. I certainly got some tickets for speeding. It was the kind of car that made you want to go into garage (车库) so you could say good night to it.
Now, so many years later, I can look back and say that I have never owned any car for more than three years except this one, which I have owned for over three decades. It amazes me that when I first saw it, I’d never heard of the Miata. Now you see them everywhere, and it has its own successful racing series, the MX-5 Cup.
About five years ago, I was going to visit my daughter who lived in San Francisco, and I learned that Tom Matano—who led the design of this car for Mazda — was working in San Francisco. I made an appointment and I met him. To me, it was like meeting Enzo Ferrari if you are a Ferrari nut. He turned out to be the most modest, delightful human being, and it was an honor to get to know him. These days I still drive the Miata to its fullest. Recently I went on a road trip with one of my favorite girlfriends. We were on a straight road that had no speed limit. I was hauling at 120mph. The car was happy as a camper, as they say, and so was its driver.

On the last day of our visit, I found myself alone on a busy corner across the street from our hotel. Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me. As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me. She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across. Together, we moved slowly into the chaos.
Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.
Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance. A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won’t immediately appear on the scene.
For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect. Everyone needs recognition, to be seen as worthy of being known, to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.

Rome, Italy
Italy is known for its love of quality food, and the same applies to the coffee. Rome is packed with cafes that keep the city running. Coffee brewers take their business very seriously, so that you rarely meet a watered-down cup.
Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne loves coffee so much that they hold an annual coffee festival and have their own coffee-related publication, the Melbourne Coffee Review. What makes Melbourne coffee shops unique is the way the city is divided: the city is divided into several villages, each with its own specific culture. The most recommended drinks to get in Melbourne are typically lattes or other coffee drinks with milk.
Vienna, Austria
When it comes to coffee, Vienna goes hard: the city had its coffee shops listed as “intangible heritage(非物质文化遗产)” by UNESCO in20l1. Vienna cafes pride themselves on their atmosphere, taking the furnishings and decoration of shops quite seriously. These spaces are great social or people-watching atmospheres. Viennese particularly enjoy cappuccinos and the local Wiener Melange.
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Considered the “birthplace of coffee”, and one of the world’s top coffee bean producers today, it’s no surprise that coffee is an important part of Ethiopian culture. If you have friends or relatives there, expect to be invited to coffee ceremony. You’ll enjoy roasting and grinding(研磨) the beans, then brewing them in a clay pot before finally enjoying the final product with your hosts.

We tend to overlook luck's role, and this seems to get worse the richer we get; surveys show that the wealthiest are least likely to owe their fortunes to good fortune. Many such people oppose taxation(税收) and government spending: why should others get a handout(救济品) if they don’t need one? More often than not, they vote against the very policies that helped them get lucky to begin with. In a recent Atlantic essay, Robert Frank, an economist who has studied attitudes to chance, quoted(引用) EB White: “Luck is not something you can mention in the presence of self-made men.”
However, if we see this just as a problem of the super-rich people, we may let the rest of us off too easily. Anyone living in a highly developed economy in 2019 is already the one who benefits from luck - for example, not living in the modern-day Central African Republic, where few people can live a long life. In fact, we are lucky to have been born human. You might have been a battery hen, or a mayfly with only one day to live.
Our blindness to such truths isn’t only because we’re self-absorbed but also we attach more significance to things that are easier to call to mind. It's not hard to recall countless times when you put in the effort to succeed: struggling through university finals, preparing for job interviews, tolerating a long-distance travel to work. On the other hand, it's rather difficult to realize you're privileged-like not being born in a war zone, or before antibiotics(抗生素), and so forth.
1. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean?A.. Self-made men don't like to be talked about. |
B.Successful people tend to overlook the role of luck. |
C.Successful people owe their achievements to luck. |
D.Self-made men are more likely to show off their fortune. |
A.struggling through university finales. | B.living in a war zone |
C.tolerating a long-distance travel | D.preparing for interviews |
A.few people in Africa are lucky | B.people succeed because of luck |
C.people value the important of lucky | D.each of us is actually privileged |

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110 year old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use email to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fastfood restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,“Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”
1. The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to ________.A.use for their schoolwork |
B.access the Internet |
C.work at home |
D.connect them to libraries |
A.attend lectures on information technology |
B.travel around the world |
C.get information from around the world |

While the picture book is long gone, the saying remains and the phenomenon still exists.
The Joneses are everywhere, living a successful and wealthy life. Their skin is beautiful, their body is perfect, and they have much money. They have the good house, pets, smart children and they seem never to struggle. For people, the Joneses take the form of a particular family and they regard the Joneses as a description of perfection.
We tell ourselves constantly if we could become someone just like our neighbors, we would be happy. However, as we compare ourselves with others, we notice the deep pain that these comparisons bring about. Well then, what do we do about the Joneses? We should remind ourselves nobody is perfect and perfection is an illusion. So we should train our brains to question or change the distorted (歪曲的) ways of thinking, and see the big picture.
While the methods above do help us see others more clearly, the methods alone won't solve the problem. Moving away from comparison means turning inward to address our insecurities and inviting more mercy. From there, we can honestly begin to notice what we want for ourselves and work to reach those goals. That, finally, is the road to a peaceful mind.
As we move away from the comparative model of judging worth and stop seeing others, success as a treat, we can even feel glad that the Joneses have meaningful careers. We can hope their marriage is happy, their bank account is full, and that their children are successful. We can hope good things happen to the Joneses.
1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A.How "the Joneses" live. |
B.What your neighbors have. |
C.Why "the Joneses" are perfect. |
D.How your neighbors affect you. |
A.Being grateful to life. | B.Understanding others. |
C.Gaining peace of mind. | D.Being close to perfection. |

C.Show our love to other people. | D.Treat others with a normal attitude. |

Until now, a survey of 43 countries published on October 30th by the Pew Research Centre shows that people in emerging markets are within a whisker of(一步之遥) expressing the same level of satisfaction as people in rich countries. It is in line with the standard view of happiness and income seen so far.
According to the survey, in 2007, 57%of respondents in rich countries regarded themselves as happy; in emerging markets the share was 33% ;in poor countries only 16%-a classic expression of the standard view. But in 2017,54% of rich-country respondents counted themselves as happy, whereas in emerging markets the percentage jumped to 51%.
The sharp increase happened thanks to huge improvements in countries such as Indonesia(+35) and Pakistan(+22).In 12 of the 24 emerging markets, half or more people rate their life satisfaction in the top of the ladder.
This is not to say the link between income and satisfaction has been snapped. Poor countries still lag behind: only a quarter of the people there count themselves as happy-half the level of the other two groups. There is also a clear link between happiness and income growth. China’s GDP rose at an annual average rate of 10% in 2007-2017 and its happiness level rose 26 points.
Within countries, richer people express more satisfaction than their poorer neighbors. The study divided respondents into categories with higher and lower incomes and fewer and more household goods. In every country in every group, richer folk with more goods expressed higher levels of happiness. So at a personal level, money does buy happiness. And if you ask people about different aspects of their lives-health, family life, religion, standard of living-it turns out that satisfaction with living standards still has the biggest influence on happiness.
1. What led to the increase of happiness in emerging markets?A.Economic downturn. |
B.Investment in emerging markets. |
C.Their rapid development. |
D.More cooperation with rich countries. |

【推荐3】Closeness and independence are both important in our life. Though all humans need both of them, women tend to focus on the first and men on the second. It is as if their lifeblood ran in different directions.
These differences can give women and men differing views of the same situation, as they did in the case of couple I will call Tracy and Brian. When Brian’s old high school friend called him at work and announced he’d be in town on business the following month, Brian invited him to stay for the weekend. That evening he informed Tracy that they were going to have a houseguest, and that he and his friend would go out together the first night to chat like old times. Tracy was upset. She was going to be away on business the week before, and the Friday night when Brian would be out with his friend would be her first night home. But what upset her the most was that Brian had made these plans on his own and informed her of them, rather than discussing them with her before extending the invitation.
Tracy would never make plans, for a weekend or an evening, without first checking with Brian. She can’t understand why he doesn’t show her the same courtesy and consideration that she shows him. But when she protests, Brian says, “I can’t say to my friend, ‘I have to ask my wife for permission’!”
To Brian, checking with his wife means seeking permission, which implies that he is not independent, not free to act on his own. To Tracy, checking with her husband makes her feel good to know and show that she is involved with someone, that her life is bound up with someone else’s.
Tracy and Brian both felt upset by this incident because it cut to the core of their primary concerns. Tracy was hurt because she sensed a failure of closeness in their relationship: He didn’t care about her as much as she cared about him. And he was hurt because he felt she was trying to control him and limit his freedom.
