Most Chinese filmgoers will be familiar with the name of Zhang Yimou, one of the country's most successful and internationally praised film directors. Films such as Raise the Red Lantern and Hero brought his films to the attention of the West, and succeeded in creating a new audience for Chinese cinema.
Born in 1951 , Zhang Yimou spent his youth working on farms and in factories, during which time he developed a love of photography. When the Beijing Film Academy reopened, Zhang Yimou became one of the first students. After graduation, his career as director of photography began.
In 1987 Zhang directed his first film, Red Sorghum, which was a great success. In 1992, Zhang's Raise the Red Lantern was nominated (提名)for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Filmgoers were fascinated by the extraordinary visual (视觉的) beauty of Zhang's films, and by the importance in his stories of his heroines.
In 2002, Zhang made Hero, a martial (武打)arts film set in ancient times but told in a completely different, modern style. Hero achieved great success in the West.
In 2004, Zhang made Houses of the Flying Dragons, another martial arts film, which Zhang described as being “ much more like a modern romantic story." in which the characters devote every other thing for love.
Perhaps one of the keys to Zhang's success as a filmmaker is the fact that his preparations for a film are so detailed. He has said before he starts a project he discusses everything in detail with every single person involved in the film. The result is that when filming starts, everyone understands what is wanted. One thing is certain - Zhang has many more years of successful filmmaking before him.

She remembered her son looking at her for a moment before saying, “Let’s feed the homeless.” She thought he meant that he wanted to donate cans, or spend a day volunteering at a soup kitchen. But Jaxson had something bigger in mind.
“They need a full Easter meal like we do,” he said. LaKeicee asked him how many people he wanted to feed. “As many as possible,” Jaxson replied. “That’s how it all began,” LaKeicee recalled. “He’s been going ever since.”
Jaxson Turner, now 13, is the founder of his own charity—N2Y2C, a nonprofit he has been running with his mother’s help for three years. He has four main projects: feeding the homeless, domestic violence awareness, back to school supplies for classmates in need, and a Christmas project in partnership with Samaritan Inn.
Jaxson’s inspiration came from seeing people on corners begging for food. He saw it throughout the city and realized that people in need were everywhere. He also grew up cooking with his mother, who made a big Sunday dinner every week, and he wanted to give that experience to other people.
Jaxson raised money through grassroots efforts like lemonade stands and GoFundMe pages. Some of it was used to buy school supplies for over 100 kids a year, and some was used for a Christmas party he threw for the kids staying at Samaritan Inn, a homeless shelter in McKinney.
In total, he has raised $72,444 for N2Y2C project. N2Y2C doesn’t have a website, but it’s coming. Most of the words are spread over social media, but Jaxson has big plans for the future. As LaKeicee says, there’s always someone out there who needs help, and she is honored to help her son do it.

In his life, Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his works— more than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Though he is widely read, Frost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems.
Though born in California, Frost was brought up in New England, where he is inseparably linked. After dropping out of Dartmouth College to seek his literary dream, he remained upset for years, producing collections of works but failing to get enough of them published to make his efforts financially worthwhile. Finally, Frost left the United States in 1912 to see whether his works might be better received in London. It was, and in 1913 his first full collection was published in Great Britain. Fellow American poet Amy Lowell adored Frost’s work and brought it back to the United States, publicizing it insistently. Soon afterwards Frost’s collections became bestsellers, and he became a famous figure.
From then on, Frost was on his way to the lifelong respect and recognition for his achievements in poetry. In 1961, he was invited to read a poem for the presidential inauguration (总统就职典礼) of John F. Kennedy. He recited his poem, TheGiftOutright, from memory at the ceremony. This was perhaps his last poetry reading in front of a wide national audience before his death in 1963. More importantly, Frost became the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

My cousin and I discovered the dark gray album when we were going through Grandma’s things. Some were holiday postcards. But most of the postcards had pictures of flowers or birds that did not show a holiday or a travel destination. Instead of describing a holiday, the notes were invitations to come to a dinner party or go for a walk the next day.
“Why do these postcards ask you to come to tea?” I asked.
“Because this is how we communicated before we had a telephone,” she said.“I would put a postcard in the morning mail, and a friend would receive it that afternoon. Then she’d post a reply that arrived in my mail the next morning.”
“You got mail twice a day?”
“Yes. Remember, we had no phone.”
My cousin and I looked at each other. Connecting by postcards seemed as strange as using a carrier pigeon (信鸽).
I had forgotten about my grandmother’s postcards until lockdowns restricted (限制) our trips to see our three granddaughters. While I sent them texts, I wanted to give them something tactile (能触知的) to remind them of my love during this special time. Remembering my grandmother’s postcard album, I bought several sets of cards. Every few weeks, I’d write notes and mail them. The girls sometimes replied with short thank-you texts.
Then one day I opened my mailbox and saw three hand-addressed envelopes. Each girl thanked me for the postcards. The notes said how they’d been separated from friends, and how my messages had comforted them in a difficult time.
Yes, I received my granddaughters’ letters. Even when the lockdowns end, I will continue to send them postcards because everyone loves getting something tactile in the mail.

At the age of 12, David began working as an artist. His dad was writing a computer instruction and worried that it would be boring to read. So he asked David to draw pictures of turtles (the name of the computer program) to explain it. The publisher liked his drawings, and soon David had the job of drawing more turtles in action. “I learned a great lesson, which was that, to make money as an artist, I couldn't always draw what I wanted,” he says. “I had to figure out how to draw a turtle drinking tea and other things like that.”
David worked for 20 years as a commercial (商业的) artist, but he often felt cooped up (禁锢) sitting at a computer for 10 hours a day. Then, on a sunny afternoon about ten years ago, he brought some chalk and started drawing on the sidewalk. That's when Sluggo came to life.
“One of the reasons I like to put art on the street is to take people by surprise,” he says. “I can have fun drawing, and knowing it will be washed away helps me not think too much. It frees me up.”
It takes David about two hours to complete one drawing. He uses a lot of sidewalk characteristics in his street art. It can be difficult to draw on surfaces that are not flat. He has to notice where shadows will land so they won't destroy the 3D drawings he creates.
Today, more and more people are accepting and looking for his work. David's artwork can also be found across the country and even throughout the world. Photos of his drawings have been shown at many universities and museums.
