A camera has captured footage of two wild giant pandas in a national park in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The clips, taken in the Xuebaoding section of the Giant Panda National Park, include two pandas wandering in the daytime and moving alone at night. It is particularly rare to see two wild giant pandas walking together, the administration of the park said on Friday.
In the video, a giant panda walked up to a tree and sniffed it carefully. Then a second panda, looking like a quiet “little girl”, approached, looking at the ground, perhaps in search of food. Later, the first panda turned around, rubbing its bottom back and forth as if scratching or dancing, a typical marking behavior in animals. After that, it lay on the ground, waving its hands and feet around, as if to amuse its companion.
According to a staff member at the administration, the camera was set up on Dec. 23, 2019 in a location that was often visited by the furry animals.
Wildlife protection experts said the video was likely taken in April, the breeding(繁殖) season for wild giant pandas. The two adult pandas were very harmonious together, with no fighting, leading to the conclusion that they were probably a male and a female engaged in courting and playing.
In 2017, China announced a plan to build the Giant Panda National Park to help the endangered animals strengthen their relations, bringing together pandas on six mountains in three provinces, Gansu, Shaanxi and Sichuan.

And now rats have been observed moving their heads in time with the tunes of Mozart, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and others, according to a new paper from the University of Tokyo. What’s more, the rats seems to respond (回应) to the same beats that get humans’ feet tapping (轻踩).
The researchers played a sonata by Mozart for lab rats at different changes of the original speed: 75%, 100%, 200% and 400%. Wireless sensors (感应器) on the rats, bodies tracked their movements. Meanwhile, 20 people took part in it and listened to the same music through motion sensor- equipped headphones.
It was observed that the rats’ head movements were the most obvious when the music played at its normal speed, which was around 132 bpm (beats per minute). The same was true for the people taking part in it. The researchers then changed to some pop songs such as Lady Gaga’s “Bora This Way” and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”,As with Mozart’s, rats moved their heads along the rhythm (节奏) of pop songs, similar to how people do, at about 120 to 140 bpm.
The study showed that both rats and humane moved their heads along to the beat in a similar rhythm. The level of head moving from both humans and rats decreased as the music sped up. The study suggests that there is something similar about the way human and rat brains respond to rhythm, but rats do not match their motions to the beat like humans do. Humans can tell the timing of a beat in advance and move predictably to it.
Aniruddh Patel, a psychologist who studies brain response to music, says humans and parrots respond to beats with big, voluntary movements such as head shaking, dancing or foot tapping. Patel also stresses that this study does not show that rats have the same emotional associations with music as humans do. Yet he believes it could help show how humans and some other animals developed a sense of rhythm.

But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop into bodies of water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide toward land—like surfers who create and then ride their own waves.
As with many scientific advances-Isaac Newton’s apple or Benjamin Franklin’s lightning bolt—Dr. Roh’s experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech’s Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water’s surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water.
Dr. Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local Pasadena honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to restrict each bee’s bodily movement, allowing close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and producing a forward force. Bees get trapped on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It’s a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity.
The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn’t been documented in other insects and most semiaquatic insects use their legs for propulsion, which is known as water-walking. It may have evolved in bees, they predicted.
Dr. Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees’ surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea. “This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can’t send a boat or helicopter,” Dr. Gharib said.

Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field, in pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun. He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.
The indoor plants did start tracking the “sun” again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24-hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.
When sunflowers track the sun, the east sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way. The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sunward side of the plant during the day or on the other side at night. A plant growth-regulating hormone (激素), called auxin, appears to be a key driver.
The “dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures (成熟) and its flowers open up. At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.
“Bees like warm flowers.” Harmer said, adding that the bees are cold-blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.
“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said “We’re currently testing this idea.”
1. Why did Harmer do the experiment on sunflowers?A.To see how sunflowers grow up. |

Specifically, content related to literature on TikTok has generated its own domain. Commonly referred to as “BookTok,” this side of the platform focuses on all things about books: book recommendations, tips for pleasing bookshelves and edits related to literature-based fandoms (粉丝圈).
With heightened demand for new media to comfort themselves during the pandemic period of severe challenges, many young adults have regarded literature as a form of escape. Restarting former literary passions, BookTok users have turned their attention to the app to praise the novels that have helped serve as a brief getaway to worlds within bound pages.
Through a revival of novels that shaped the childhoods of many who are now young adults, even younger generations on the app have been exposed to foundational novels in young adult literature. Along with this emphasis on nostalgic (怀旧的) fandoms, BookTok takes advantage of TikTok trends in order to attract those who may not be familiar with literature to read. The popularity of BookTok and the novels that are recommended to young adults on the app have had a direct effect on bookstores and book sales, with both independent bookstores and chains such as Barnes & Noble taking notice of the broader range of readers that are influenced by TikTok and updating their stock to appeal to users.
As of March 2021, BookTok has over 6 billion views and will only continue to grow larger. Though the popularity of BookTok brought many significant questions regarding the future of the book industry and the books that receive mass attention on social media, the importance of the BookTok phenomenon perhaps lies mainly with the readers who claim their love for books and the creative channels through which they express this admiration. In 2006, Finkbeiner was asked to give a presentation on climate change in his class. Inspired by Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, who led an effort to plant 30 million trees, Felix spoke about deforestation and its effect on the planet. At the end of his talk, he followed with his own fearless idea that a million trees should be planted in each country to fight climate change. He challenged his classmates to help him. One year later, the project named “Plant-for-the-Planet” was born. It wasn’t long before his fearless dream was realized.
When he was just 13, He was invited to speak at a United Nations conference and made the call for others to join him. “We cannot trust that adults alone will save our future, “he said in the speech. “We have to take our future in our own hands.”
Finkbeiner is now in his twenties, and Plant-for-the-Planet is an organization with around 70, 000 members. It works to teach people about climate change and to encourage the planting of more trees. Finkbeiner has taken over the United Nations’ Billion Tree Programme, planning to plant another trillion trees instead.
Finkbeiner continues to give talks on climate change to world leaders. “I don’t think we can give up on this generation of adults,” he says, “and wait 20 or 30 years for our generations to come to power. We don’t have that time. All we can do is to push present world leaders in the right direction.

One of the most exciting and publicized uses of 5G is telesurgery (远程手术). This is when a doctor remotely performs surgery on a patient. They may not be in the same room, nor even the same country! In January 2019, the world’s first remote surgery was performed in Fujian province. A doctor controlled robotic arms through a 5G network to remove the liver of a laboratory test animal. Two months later, China completed its first 5G-based human brain surgery between a doctor and a patient located more than 4,000 kilometers away.
Team leader Tian Wei told Xinhua News Agency, “The combination of 5G technology with surgical robots is a huge technological advance that will help us share our skills with more patients in distant regions.”
“People across society can now have access to top medical resources. In the future, using robots and 5G will be common. The medical community will be smarter,” he added.
These advances were only possible with 5G. The high speed of the network means there is no meaningful latency between a doctor’s movements in one place and a robot’s in the other. This allows doctors far more precision than on a 4G network. It’s the same as playing a computer game online. Slow connections mean trembling shaking and unpredictable movements.
5G will also bring everyday benefits to healthcare. Before treatment, 5G will support a high number of high-definition (高清晰度的) video calls with doctors and provide immediate advice to those who can’t visit hospital. After being treated, wearable devices will send data in real-time to doctors, allowing hospitals to monitor recovering patients from their homes.
5G technology aims to ensure everyone has access to good healthcare. But as 5G is rolled out, we may realize world where robot operations and home healthcare become common.

Released on Friday, the Zao app went viral as Chinese users pursued the chance to act out scenes from well-known movies. This is done using “deepfake” technology, which has already caused concerns elsewhere over its potential misuse.
Users provide a series of selfies in which they blink, open their mouths or assume other expressions. The app will then realistically change the person’s animated likeness onto movies, TV shows or other similar content.
But this has also resulted in privacy concerns as the app’s policy reportedly gave it “free, permanent, transferable, and re-licenseable” rights to all user-generated content.
Apart from worrying that their personal information can be disclosed, users are also concerned that the app, through facial recognition technology, can compromise their online payment accounts.
On Sunday, the app issued a statement promising to modify its privacy policy. It also assured users that the app will not result in any compromise to their payment accounts. The app has since changed its terms to ensure that it will not use headshots or videos uploaded by users other than to improve the app. It also promised to remove from its servers any content that was uploaded but subsequently deleted by users.
Zao is owned by Momo Inc, a Tinder-like Chinese dating service that is listed on the Us Nasdaq. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spoke to the developer of the AI face-changing app on Wednesday. The Ministry’s department of network security said it demanded the company sick to relevant laws regarding the collection of personal information. Apart from calling on the company to standardize its terms of agreement it also made it clear that the company should do its utmost to ensure the protection of user data.

Corals are comeback creatures. As the world froze and melted and sea levels rose and fell over 30,000 years, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, which is roughly the size of Italy, died and revived five times. But now, thanks to human activity, corals face the most complex condition they have yet had to deal with.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change, a rise in global temperatures of 1.5oC could cause coral reefs to decline 70-90%. The planet is about 1oC hotter than in the 19th century and its seas are becoming warmer, stormier and more acidic. This is already affecting relations between corals and the single-celled algae (海藻), which give them their color. When waters become unusually warm, algae float away, leaving reefs a ghostly white. This “bleaching” is happening five times as often as it did in the 1970s. Meanwhile the changing chemistry of the oceans makes it harder for corals to form their structures.
If corals go, divers and marine biologists are not the only people who will miss them. Reefs take up only a percent of the sea floor, but support a quarter of the planet’s fish diversity. The fish that reefs shelter are especially valuable to their poorest human neighbors, many of whom depend on them as a source of protein. Roughly an eighth of the world’s population lives within 100km of a reef. Corals also protect 150,000km of shoreline in more than 100 countries and territories from the oceans buffeting, as well as generating billions of dollars in tourism revenue.
Coral systems must adapt if they are to survive. They need protection from local sources of harm. Their eco-systems suffer from waste from farms, building sites and blast fishing. Governments need to impose tighter rules on these industrials, such as tougher local building codes, and to put more effort into enforcing rules against overfishing.
Setting up marine protected areas could also help reefs. Locals who fear for their livelihoods could be given work as rangers with the job of looking after the reserves. Visitors to marine parks can be required to pay a special tax, like what has been done in the Caribbean.
Many reefs that have been damaged could benefit from restoration. Coral’s biodiversity offers hope, because the same coral will grow differently under different conditions. Corals of the western Pacific, for example, can withstand higher temperatures than the same species in the eastern Pacific, which proves a way forward to encourage corals to grow in new spots.

I tried as hard as I could to remain calm but my heart was racing. I stared down at my sweat-covered shaking hands.
I looked up again at the audience realizing that these were real people. They were not just my mum and dad who would say “Good job!” even if I messed up the entire piece.
What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes?
As it turned out, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight (聚光灯)was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together drying off the sweat.
Slowly I walked to the mud-brown piano in the center of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys which were waiting impatiently to be played. I swallowed the golf-ball-sized lump (隆起部分) in my throat and sat down. Slowly I opened the music. Next I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory (象牙色的) keys.
As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my years of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece so many times that I could play it backwards if requested.
Although at one point, I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically (自动地).
My eyes burned holes into the pages in front of me. There was no way that I was going to lose my concentration. To keep this to myself, I leaned forward and focused carefully on the music.
When I came to the end of the page a warning went off inside my head: DON’T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!
Needless to say I obeyed myself with all my heart and mind. And proud of my “page-turning” feat (技艺) I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake.

Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, 21, are happy to give a hand. The three men cut truckloads of wood (数货车木头) and then give it to those in need.
It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted (发帖子) on Facebook: “If you are in need of firewood and cannot afford it, please message me personally! If you know someone who burns wood, and they’re living in a cold house this holiday season, please help me and my boys make sure no one goes cold in our neighbourhood.”
