Top 4 Colleges Whose Graduates Earn the Most Money
Who says college isn’t worth it? Graduates of each of these 4 small colleges can look forward to cashing in when they hit the job market.
Amherst College: Amherst, Massachusetts
Average earnings: $82,000
Harvard may be the more selective and well-known university in the state, but it’s Amherst College’s graduates who are pulling in the salary. It’s known as one of the “Little Ivies”. Despite Amherst’s tiny size (2,000 undergraduates in total), its alumni (校友) network is well-connected and involved with the student body, which helps explain why graduates get top job opportunities.
Lafayette College: Easton, Pennsylvania
Average earnings: $81,000
Another Little Ivy, Lafayette College graduates about the same number of students as Amherst each year. Those graduates make nearly as much as Amherst graduates based on Zippia’s research. It’s entirely possible that Lafayette’s success in getting its graduates good jobs is that it’s one of the few liberal arts (文科) colleges of its size that also offer its students engineering degrees.
Helene Fuld College of Nursing: New York, NY
Average earnings: $79,300
Nurses are in very high demand, according to Indeed, and that demand is expected to remain strong. This contributes to the high pay offered to this nursing school’s graduates. So does its location in New York City, where salaries (and the cost of living) are higher.
Bates College: Lewiston, Maine
Average earnings: $75,700
Another small liberal arts college — and Little Ivy — Bates offers, among other things, a small teacher-to-student rate. It is also noted that Bates has one of the most beautiful campuses around, helping draw a highly driven student body.

Rent a room
Spare room? Not only will a lodger earn you an income, but also, thanks to the government-backed “rent a room” program, you won’t have to pay any tax on the first £4500 you make per year. Try advertising your room on Roomspare or Roommateeasy.
Make money during special events

Live on set
Renting your home out as a “film set” could earn you hundreds of pounds a day, depending on the film production company and how long your home is needed. A quick search on the Internet will bring up dozens of online companies that allow you to register your home for free — but you will be charged if your home gets picked.
Use your roof
You need the right kind of roof, but some energy companies pay the cost of fixing solar equipment (around £14,000) and let you use the energy produced for nothing. Firstly, it’s a great introduction to vocabulary. Seeing an adult sounding out the words and linking them to the shapes on the page begins to build up vocabulary that they will use for the rest of their life.
Then there are a variety of good effects of hearing stories which improve their minds and develop social awareness and sills. At a time when they are perhaps stuck indoors more than ever before, reading is the best way to motivate children’s imagination. They can travel to the moon, meet the Gruffalo and pop in to a chocolate factory all before they’ve even had lunch!
There’s no better way to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes than reading their story and seeing things from another’s point of view is a great way to build empathy (共鸣), tolerance and qualities needed. There are some fantastic children’s books which show characters acting as strong role models. These stories can encourage future leaders and thinkers, so every child can feel they can achieve their dreams, from the Little Leaders series to Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls.
Now is the perfect time to build up a library of excellent reads ready for children to enjoy now and in the future. They will create memories to last a lifetime. On top of the benefits for your little ones, it’s fun, relaxing and a great chance to go back and reread the best books from your own childhood.

In most Asian societies, on the contrary, people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient (东方) reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have memorized.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’ t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖症). The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights.
Not doing sports increases teens’ hazard of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be prevented by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的)performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park
The most visually striking point here is El Capitan. The massive cliff (悬崖), 2.5 times as tall as the Empire State Building, towers over the rest of the park, which offers you a perfect spot for taking impressive pictures. You can also wander the Salt Basin Dunes, 2,000 acres of shockingly white sands. If you're taking very long hikes, bring plenty of water and some protein-rich snacks.
Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument preserves more than 87,500 acres of wild rivers and thick forests. In addition to hiking and camping, Katahdin is a great spot for hunting and fishing. Bring some hiking boots and perhaps trekking poles (登山杖)to cross these rocky forest trails. The park has a day use fee of $5, and the first-come, first-serve campsites cost $8 per night.
North Cascades National Park
Though the snowy peaks of the North Cascades are dangerous in the winter, it turns into a thick and green park in the warmer months, filled with beautiful mountain valleys and clear lakes. You can take a guided nature hike or go fishing. Winter driving conditions in the North Cascades can be dangerous, due to water, frost, snow, or ice on the roads.
Organ Mountains.—Desert Peaks National Monument
This is not a national park, but is a national monument. It is home to several rare species of plants and animals, and lava (炫岩)flow. There are excellent chances for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and nature photography, as well as overnight hiking. You can also go primitive camping anywhere in the monument for free. It could be said that first aid is the more general of the two, and training in first aid might include instructions and practice on how to respond to a variety of medical emergencies that could be posing threat to life or to a part of a person’s body. One such medical emergency could be cessation(停止)of breathing or heartbeat, and the appropriate response, in this case, might be to perform CPR. Thus, CPR can be seen as a type of first-aid response.
There can be differences in the amount of first-aid training people learn, and courses can sometimes be broken down into emergency and standard training. Standard training is actually the more extensive of the two, and would include teaching and learning how to handle a variety of medical situations like bites from insects or animals, broken bones, poisoning, childbirth, and care of wounds. Emergency first aid tends to be limited to the teaching of CPR, how to handle choking emergencies, and instruction on wound care for heavy bleeding.
CPR and first aid may be taught together or are sometimes taken as separate courses. People may need a whole day of practice or longer before getting CPR certification, which should be obtained from recognized agencies like the Red Cross. The big difference between CPR and first aid, in terms of taking classes, is that CPR focuses only on learning to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and recognize those circumstances as soon as possible in which it should be performed; while first-aid classes may teach this too, but they will teach in the broader context of how people need to respond to lots of different injuries or illness.
The issue of CPR and first aid may get confusing when people are asked to get training in one or both of these. Some people may be asked to take a first-aid course and have CPR training. Those who need more extensive training in standard first aid certainly won’t satisfy this need by only taking a CPR course. Those confused about what training they need should get this issue clear with the person(usually an employer)requesting the training.
Being able to respond first in a medical emergency usually means needing to know CPR, but other knowledge could be just as essential. For instance, how to stop uncontrollable bleeding or how to handle an episode of anaphylactic shock(过敏性休克)could be vital too.
1. What is the purpose of performing CPR?A.To be qualified as a first-aid trainer. |
B.To gain practical knowledge of first aid. |

As cat owners know well, cats do not follow humans in the same way dogs do. As a result, many people have come to think that maybe cats do not understand human language. A report shows that cats understand human language well enough to recognize their own names. The report tells a series of experiments with house cats in Japan. In these tests, people said four words that were similar to cats' names, and each word had the same number of syllables and some of the same sounds.
The cats seemed to lose interest after the speaker said a few of the words. Then the person said the cats' names. The cats moved their ears when they heard their names. They also moved their feet.
In another part of the experiment,Japanese researchers went to a cat café, a business where humans can come to spend time with cats. They compared house cats to cats that live at the cat cafe. When people said the names of the cats staying in the cat café, these house cats reacted as much to the names of the cats living at the cat cafe just as to their own names. The researchers thought this was because visitors may give food to the cats when they reacted.
The researchers hope that the findings from their study will help both cats and people. They add that perhaps cats can learn words to warn them of dangerous things or places.
1. What does the report show?A.Dogs can recognize their names. | B.Cats know nothing about humans. |
C.Cats understand some human language. | D.Dogs have lived with humans shorter than cats. |
A.They moved their ears. | B.They made a big noise. |
C.They moved off the speaker. | D.They touched the speaker with their feet. |

【推荐3】If you’ve ever had trouble getting your teen up in the morning or you’ve seen your teen fall asleep during the school day, you’re not alone. Many teens have difficulty in waking up early for school, and that’s because they sleep late at night.
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Adolescent Sleep Working Group reviewed studies about sleep in teens. Researchers studied the harmful effects of not getting enough sleep-anything less than 8.5 to 9 hours of sleep on school nights-could have on young people. They discovered not getting enough sleep may cause poor grades at school. Not getting enough sleep has also been connected to a higher risk of car accidents in teens.
It may seem as though the way to solve the problem would be for teens to just go to sleep earlier. But researchers say that isn’t likely to work. Teens experience physical changes that make falling asleep earlier difficult. Their biological (生物的) clocks just won't allow them to fall asleep at 8 p.m., even when they’re tired.
Studies have shown that just delaying (推迟) school by 30 minutes can have a great effect on a teen's health and performance. So most researchers suggest the school start time be delayed until at least 8:30 a.m. for teenagers.
Some of the benefits could include:
·Teens may be more likely to get the necessary amount of sleep.
·The delayed start time could help teens sleep during their natural sleep.
·Teens may be less likely to depend on coffee to stay awake during the day.
·Enough sleep could help teens study better in class, which could help them do better in exams.
·Sleeping longer could reduce health problems caused by a lack of sleep in the long run.
·Getting home later in the afternoon may reduce the amount of time when some teens are home alone, and could reduce the possibility that tens will take part in unhealthy activities.
But doing that can also cause some problems.
