Some Must-see Travel Destinations for 2020
National Geographic has issued its 2020 list of best travel destinations across the world and it's sure to inspire would-be vacationers.
Guizhou Province, China
Historically one of China's most undiscovered provinces, southwestern Guizhou is gaining global notice as a big data center. The mountainous region's plentiful water and cool climate are attractive to Huawei, Apple and dozens of other tech powerhouses that have been established there. This has improved access to the entire province, including the traditional villages of ethnic minority groups, such as Dong and Miao.
Zakouma National Park, Chad
Home to a rapidly growing African elephant population — some 559 in 2019 and a thousand expected by 2024 — Zakouma National Park is an off-the map African destination. The park's location, in southeastern Chad, one of the world's least-visited countries, makes Zakouma a best-kept secret. Illegal hunting previously had made the park nearly a war zone, with 90 percent of the wild elephants killed. Funding from the European Union has brought back life to the region.
Cairo, Egypt
The Great Pyramid, one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World, can be found just outside Cairo. This triangular structure has been of interest to travelers far and wide for more than 4,000 years. Yet splendid as it is, it also houses some of the most interesting mysteries. It makes visitors wonder what's inside the pyramid.
National Blue Trail, Hungary
Hungary is a dream hiking destination thanks to the country's National Blue Trail. Winding its way from Irottko Mountain to the northeastern village of Hollóháza, the Blue Trail is a wonderfully diverse web of paths labeled with white-and-blue way markers. As Europe's first long-distance trail, it's part of the nearly 6,500-mile European long distance walking route E4.

I’m a Senior I student in a middle school. This term, my favorite teacher, Miss Mao, no longer teaches us. I want to see her, but I’m afraid that she no longer likes me and I don’t want to trouble her. I really miss her. What should I do?
Tian Yan
Dear Tian Yan,
It’s bad luck that you have lost your favorite teacher. But, if she is still in your school, nothing can stop you going to see her. When she isn’t busy, ask her if she minds having a quick chat. You can then tell her she was your favorite teacher—everyone is happy to know that he or she is liked!
If she has left the school, it will be more difficult to meet her. It will be hard, but remember people always come and go in their lives. We can’t rely on them to be with us all the time.
You may be sad to say goodbye to her, but we can remember and learn from her. Think of her best qualities.
You could also try looking for similar qualities in your other teachers. Study hard and give your new teacher a chance. In time, you might start to see that he or she has different qualities to learn from.
Finally, you can not completely rely on other people to get you through your studies, or even your life.

Best time to visit
The best month for sightseeing in Seoul is during the warm weather between summer and early fall.
Getting around
In Seoul, you have three main forms of transportation: train, subway, and taxi. The fastest option to get around Seoul is the Airport Railroad Express train. It has two options: the Express and the All-stop. While the All-stop option is cheaper, it’s about 15 minutes slower than the Express. Seoul has one of the largest subway stations in the world with 14 lines. It may seem a bit awful, but once you get used to it, it’s pretty easy.
Another option to get around Seoul is to rent a car. This is one of the least used options as Seoul has a convenient public transportation system.
Places to visit
Everland—the largest theme park in Korea.
Lotte World—a great theme park for kids with never-ending thrill rides.
Seoul Tower—a symbolic skyscraper where you can take breathtaking views of the city. Trickeye 3D museum—if you love photos, you will find strange photos in this museum.
Where to stay
There are lots of places to stay at Seoul. Below are our top recommendations (推荐): Myeongdong is tourists’ popular option. It has great shopping malls, great food, and lively nightlife. You can stay at the Aloft Seoul Myeongdong.
Gangnam is another popular district, which has become famous thanks to the song Gangnam Style. One of the best areas in Gangnam is Garosugil, where you will find cafes, art galleries, retail (零售) stores. A great hotel option in this area is the Dormy Inn Premium Seoul Garosugil.

Xushui Lion Dance
Hebei is the birthplace of the Northern Lion Dance. The Xushui Lion Dance is mainly performed during the Spring Festival and religious ceremonies of local temples. In the dance two people usually play the lion: one waving the lion head and the other waving the lion body and tail. The latter is one important feature of the Northern Lion Dance. The lion, with its exaggerated appearance, is mighty and valorous, and also naive and lovely. It can vividly perform watching, standing, walking,·running, rolling, sleeping and shaking its mane and also many other difficult acrobatics.
Tianta Lion Dance
The Tianta Lion Dance formed during the Sui and Tang period in Shanxi, is surprising, adventurous, vagarious, peerless and splendid, since it is performed on towering hath paces, which is really a breathtaking acrobatic scene. The protection and salvation of the Tianta Lion Dance is very important for research on local aesthetics, folklore, music and dance history.
Huangsha Lion Dance
The Huangsha Lion Dance originated in the Northern Song Dynasty and was popular in the Huashayang area of Linhai City, Zhejiang Province. Its biggest highlight is the ingenious adoption of martial arts into the performance. The Huangsha Lion Dance, valuable for research on local folklore, sociology, and aesthetics, now needs urgent protection and salvation. There are less than ten people alive who can perform the dance today.
Guangdong Lion Dance
The Guangdong Lion Dance is a typical Southern Lion Dance. It originated from the royal lion dance during the Tang Dynasty and was later introduced to the south by immigrants from the north. The Guangdong Lion Dance finally came into being in its present form that adopted local characteristics during the Ming Dynasty. Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello; E-mail, too, is slower than a text; Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.
My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”
In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’ phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.
How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. Others, like me, want no reply.
The anthropologist(人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.

D.He thought his father left him too many voice mails. |
A.Favorable. | B.Doubtful. |
C.Reserved. | D.Disapproving. |
A.Learn from the old generation. |
B.Ask once-acceptable questions. |
C.Respond with a thank-you email. |
D.Consider their audience. |

The meat-eating marsupials (有袋动物)died out on mainland Australia a few thousand years ago, but survived in Tasmania, an island of southeast Australia separated from the mainland, until the 1930s. Until now, scientists have believed the cause of this mainland extinction (灭绝)was increased activity from native Australians and dingoes (Australian wild dogs).
Scientists behind the University of Adelaide study, which was published in the Journal of Biogeography on Thursday, collected 51 new thylacine DNA samples from fossil (化石)bones and museum skins. The paper concluded that climate change starting about 4,000 years ago was likely the main cause of the mainland extinction.
The ancient DNA showed that the mainland extinction of thylacines was rapid, and not the result of loss of genetic diversity (基因多样性).There was also evidence of a population crash (大跌)in thylacines in Tasmania at the same period of time, reducing their numbers and genetic diversity.
Professor Jeremy Austin said Tasmania would have been protected from mainland Australia's warmer, drier climate due to its higher rainfall. He argued that climate change was "the only thing that could have caused, or at least started, an extinction on the mainland and caused a population crash in Tasmania.”
"They both occurred at about the same time, and the other two things that have been talked about in the past that may have driven thylacines to extinction on the mainland were dingoes and humans. So the only explanation that's left is climate change. And because that population crash happened at the same time that the species (物种)went extinct on the mainland, our argument is there's a common theme there and the only common theme is that there is this change in climate."
1. What did scientists believe in the past according to the passage?A.Marsupials were all meat-eating animals. |
B.Dingoes should be removed from Australia. |
C.Thylacines had no enemies on mainland Australia. |

What allows you to be extra lazy? Dust mites (尘螨). These little creatures live on our dead skin and produce allergens that you could breathe in while you are sleeping. And about 1.5 million dust mites are spending every night with you right now. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to get rid of them: Don’t make your bed in the morning.
Researchers at Kingston University have found that dust mites live well in warm and humid (潮湿的) environments but die in dry conditions, the BBC reports. Making your bed every morning produces a good place for these little creatures, but keeping your bed sheets open kills them off. Sometimes it pays to be a little lazy.
“Something as easy as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove humidity from the bed sheets and mattress. If dust mites won’t be able to get enough water, they’ll finally die,” Dr Stephen Pretlove told the BBC.
Fewer dust mites means fewer health problems, too. However, not all experts agree; according to some, most homes are wet enough for dust mites to live on, no matter what we do. “I find it hard to believe that just not making your bed would have any effect on solving the problem,” Professor Andrew Wardlaw from Britain said.
1. What do experts suggest us doing in Paragraph 1?A.Following our mothers’ advice. | B.Enjoying good physical health. |
C.Keeping away from bad habits. | D.Leaving our bed unmade in the morning. |
A.By keeping our beds dry. | B.By cleaning up our rooms. |
C.By warming up our rooms. | D.By giving dust mites enough water. |
A.Not making the bed can make us lazier. |
B.It’s easy to keep dust mites away from our home. |
C.Dust mites have nothing to do with health problems. |

【推荐2】A study confirmed that the cracks (裂缝) found on the surface of Mars last year by the Curiosity Rover are evidence of ancient lakes that likely dried up about 3.5 billion years ago. The new study provides further evidence of what the climate on the Red Planet may have been like in its ancient past.
The study, published online in Geology, proved that cracks on Mars’s surface previously photographed by Curiosity are dry mud cracks which could have only been formed when wet ground was exposed to the air. This conclusion was based on an analysis of a single area of rock known as “Old Soaker.”
Researchers used the Curiosity Rover and information from its many tools including the Mars Hand Lens Imager, ChemCam Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometer (LIBS) and the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) to study both the physical appearance and the chemistry of the rock, which is described as no bigger than a coffee table.
The analysis showed that cracks on the rock were formed by exposure to air, rather than heat or the flow of water. In addition, the shape of the cracks suggests it experienced a single drying event on the planet, rather than getting wet and drying over repeatedly. The position of the cracks, closer to the center of the ancient lake rather than alongside it, also suggests that the lake levels changed often, rising and falling over time.
“The mud cracks are exciting because they help us to understand this ancient lake system,” lead study author Nathaniel Stein, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said, referring to the ancient lake system on the planet.
Scientists have known of the existence of ancient water on Mars for years. A 2015 NASA study that measured water in Mars’s atmosphere suggested that ancient oceans may once have had more water than our own Arctic Ocean. However, because the planet has less gravity and a thinner atmosphere than Earth, this water evaporated into space over the course of several billion years.
1. What is the Curiosity Rover underlined in Paragraph 1?A.A research organization. | B.An automatic machine. |
C.An ancient remain on the planet. | D.A space telescope on earth. |
A.The cracks are near the center of an ancient lake. |

B.The gravity on Mars is stronger than that on Earth. |
C.The atmosphere on Earth is thicker than that on Mars. |
D.The ancient Arctic Ocean had more water than it has now. |
A.Water on Mars. | B.A trip to Mars. |

Cinemas across the West closed in March and, despite attempts to reopen in the summer, the box office has not recovered. From October 9th Cineworld, the world's second-largest chain, will temporarily shut its 536 Regal theaters in America and its 127 British ones. AMC, the biggest, will cut the opening hours at some Odeon cinemas in Britain.
Early in the pandemic the problem was audiences. In March Disney's "Onward" closed as people refused to breathe the air with a crowd of strangers. Business got harder when governments ordered theaters to shut.
As countries have cased (解除)restrictions and audiences prepared to return, cinemas are finding little to show them. In China, where Covid-19 seems under control, studios have resumed pumping out hits. But Hollywood will not risk premiering (首映)costly blockbusters (大片)while many markets, including New York and California, remain closed, and cinema-goers cautious. Most big titles have been postponed.
Nine months without income would be disastrous (灾难性的).America's National Association of Theatre Owners predicts that seven out of ten small or medium-sized cinema companies will go bust (破产),which it has urged Congress to approve.
Both AMC and Cineworld are likely to stop a contract or file for going bust, believes Moody's, a ratings agency; AMC could run out of cash by January. Share prices of Western operators have dropped sharply this year, and are now worth a fifth as much as five years ago. Chinese ones have done better.
1. Which company will reduce the opening hours in Britain?A.Cineworld. | B.Odeon. |
C.AMC. | D.Hollywood. |
A.Government's restriction. | B.Films' attraction. |
C.Audience's attitude. | D.Operators, signing contracts. |
A.They are applying for going bust. |
B.They are complained by the audiences. |
C.They will offer the audience more big titles. |
D.They put off premiering most big blockbusters. |
A.A few famous film companies. | B.Covid-19's effect on the cinemas. |
