As warming continues, scientists warn the oxygen content of oceans across the planet could be more and more reduced, with serious consequences for the future of fish and other sea life.

1    . One is the simple fact that as water gets warmer, it can hold less dissolved(溶解的)oxygen. The other reason is less obvious.    2    —either from the atmosphere, or from photosynthesizing algae floating at the top of the sea. The oxygen then spreads to the deep ocean as the surface water slowly sinks.

Global warming is expected to reduce the mixing of the ocean by making surface seawater lighter. That's because in a warmer world we can expect more rainfall and more melting of glaciers, icebergs, and ice sheets.    3    .The extra heat from the warming atmosphere will also make surface water expand and thus make it lighter still.    4    . Instead, more of the oxygen will remain near the surface, where it will be used up by oxygen-breathing organisms.

A low-oxygen ocean may become an inescapable feature of our planet. A team of Danish researchers wondered how long oxygen levels would drop if we could somehow reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2100. They determined that over the next few thousand years oxygen levels would continue to fall, until they declined by 30 percent. The oxygen would slowly return to the oceans, but even 100,000 years from now they will not have fully recovered.    5

A.The entire ocean gets its oxygen from the surface.
B.It's not known why the oxygen level of oceans has reduced.
C.Scientists point to two reasons to expect a drop in ocean oxygen.
D.Fresh water's inpouring will make the water at the ocean's surface lighter.
E.Global warming has caused the reduction of the oxygen content of oceans worldwide.
F.If they are rights, we have every reason to worry about the major effect it has on sea life.
G.The light surface water will be less likely to sink so the deep ocean will get less oxygen.

1】A team of psychologists led by Dr. Karen McComb at the University of Sussex in the UK have discovered an effective way for humans to communicate with cats through slow blinking (眨眼睛), similar to how cats interact with each other.

Dr. McComb and her team conducted two experiments to study this phenomenon. In the first study, owners were instructed by researchers Tasmin Humphrey and Andrew Wood to slowly blink at their cats from a distance while being recorded. Humphrey and Wood found the cats were more likely to respond with slow blinking of their own compared to when no interaction took place.

To follow up on these findings, McComb, Humphrey, and Wood designed a second experiment without considering the exsisting relationship between humans and cats. Researchers, including McComb, performed the same slow blinking action. Like in the first experiment, the cats in this study also responded more favorably to slow blinking by returning the gesture and more readily approaching an extended hand, according to Humphrey’s analysis.

The slow blink expression involves partially closing the eyes briefly, copying a relaxed, friendly facial expression in humans. McComb notes that for cats, it appears to signal good intentions as constant staring could be seen as threatening. Wood says that cats may have developed this language to acknowledge humans who react positively to the signal. Being able to effectively communicate acceptance in this subtle cat way seems to strengthen the bond between cats and their owners, McComb adds.

McComb, Humphrey and Wood hope their findings can provide insight into cat behavior and thinking. They also aim to apply this knowledge of cross-species communication to evaluate cat health in various places like veterinary (兽医的) clinics and shelters, according to Humphrey. A deeper understanding of how cats interpret and respond to humans can improve our ability to properly care for household and outdoor cat populations, McComb concludes.

1. How was the second experiment different from the first one?
A.It recorded the interactive behavior of cats.
B.It required cat owners to blink from a distance.
C.It studied how cats communicate with each other.
D.It focused on how cats react to strangers’ slow blinking.
2. Why may cats develop slow blinking according to experts?
A.To attract their owners’ attention.
B.To show friendliness to other animals.
C.To respond to humans’ positive reactions.
D.To send out a signal for help to their partners.
3. What do the researchers hope to apply their findings to?
A.Improving cat behavior and habits.
B.Assessing health conditions of cats.
C.Developing ways to treat cats’ diseases.
D.Helping cat owners train their cats quickly.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Humans can communicate with cats by blinking slowly.
B.Extending hands to cats can strengthen the bond with them.
C.Cats respond favorably to humans’ friendly facial expressions.
D.Understanding cat signals improves humans’ ability to care for them.

【推荐2】Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD)(孤独症)is a disability that can cause serious social, communication and behavioral problems. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that makes them different from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from pretty good to extremely bad. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives;others need less.

People with ASD often have problems with social, emotional, and communication skills. They might repeat certain behaviors and might not want change in their daily activities. Many people with ASD may also have difficulties learning, paying attention,or reacting to things.Signs of ASD begin during early childhood and probably last throughout a person's life.

Diagnosing(诊断)ASD can be difficult since there is no medical test, like a blood test,to assess the disorders.Doctors look at the child's behavior and development to make a judgement.ASD can sometimes be diagnosed at 18 months or younger.By age 2,an experienced doctor can be considered very reliable in diagnosing ASD.However, many children may not see a doctor until much older.

There is currently no cure for ASD.However, research shows that early treatment services can improve a child's development.Early treatment services help children from birth to 3 years old(36 months)learn important skills. Therefore,it is important to talk to your child's doctor as soon as possible if you think your child has ASD or other developmental problems.

We do not know all of the causes of ASD.However, most scientists agree that genes are one of the highest risk factors that can make a person more likely to develop ASD.

If you think your child might have ASD or you think there could be a problem with the way your child plays, learns, speaks,or acts, contact your child's doctor, and share your concerns. If you're not sure who to contact, call the Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center(ECTA)at 919-962-2001.Or visit the ECTA website:https://ectacenter.org.

A.The earlier an ASD kid is diagnosed, the better it is for his(her)treatment.
B.Doctors simply have no way to diagnose an ASD kid at all.

【推荐3】Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the magic medicine many of us dream it could be.

In a new study, researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being, but only up to a point.

People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who’d had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest.

Part of finding the “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have. The researchers conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3½ to seven free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things (like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV). Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day, but only if they used it unproductively. In other words, how people use their free time matters.

Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you. If watching two hours of Real Housewives in your free time increases your happiness, you should do that. And even more traditionally productive or purposeful activities can be easy and fun. Engaging in a bit of low-key cardio, like walking, can help burn stress. Free-time activities like reading, cooking or gaming are also known to put people in a state of flow.
