With paper flowers and music hanging around in the air, Lyu Jun was hosting a small farewell ceremony at an industrial zone in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. It was a funeral for a pet dog. Lyu came up with the idea of becoming a pet mortician (殡葬师) four years ago when he was preparing to start a business.

“At that time, there was only one brick-and-mortar(实体的) business that provided funeral services for pets in Shenzhen, but hundreds of pets die every day in this city,” he said. According to Lyu, many pet owners used to bury the remains of their beloved animals near their homes , which had a harmful impact on the environment and created the risk of spreading disease.

He saw a gap in the market for someone able to properly handle the death of pets. “A pet funeral service provides treatment of the bodies that is harm-free, and it is the greatest comfort to pet owners,” Lyu said.

He takes good care of the remains of the pets and tidies up their appearance before the funeral. In addition, he prepares funeral addresses and selects suitable tombs for the pets. He also films funerals for owners who cannot attend the ceremonies, and provides paper and pens for those who want to write down their blessings and hang the notes on the wishing tree.

Over the past four years, Lyu has bid farewell to more than 2,000 dogs, cats and other kinds of animals. He also does volunteer work in his spare time to promote responsible dog raising. “The pet funeral service industry is still in its babyhood, and I hope there will be a set of strict standards for people who take on this job and a belter environment for the industry,” Lyu said.

1. Why did Lyu start the business on pet funeral service?
A.Because he could earn a lot of money from it.
B.Because he thought it met the market requirement.
C.Because he thought it would be a unique and challenging business.
D.Because he could help owners bury their dead pets near their homes.

A.He delivers speeches to mourn the pets.
B.He gives best wishes to the pets' owners.
C.He makes films of the pets for their birth.
D.He nurses and cares for the pets carefully.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Lyu volunteers to raise pets on his own.
B.The pet funeral service has got a big success.
C.More strict standards should be set for pets' owners.
D.There remains a potential in the pet funeral industry.
4. From which is the text probably taken?
A.A research report.B.An advertisement.

【推荐1】Dogs and horses may not be the closest teammates, but the two animals can have their fair share of fun — at times even playing together and mimicking(模仿)each other's facial expressions, new research suggests. These findings, published in the journal Behavioural Processes, mark the first example of so-called rapid facial mimicry occurring between play partners of different species, and suggest the existence of a universal language of play.

Though the purpose behind play remains unclear, scientists suspect the behavior is to help animals develop hunting and social skills, relieve stress or promote relationships with each other. Learning more about the contexts in which different animals play together could tell researchers a lot about play's origins and development. But apart from a handful of studies featuring humans and their pets, scientists haven't had many chances to analyze examples of interspecies' plays.

In 2018, when someone sent Palagi, an animal behaviorist, a video where a dog and horse play together, interacting with each other fluently, she took the chance to investigate further. The two species were good choices for study, because they both could recognize facial expressions in other animals. Gathering a team, Palagi began to collect and analyze hundreds of other videos where canines(犬类)and equids (马科动物) played together.

At last, 20 videos were picked out: showing animals freely playing on their own, for at least 30 seconds, without human involvement. In the videos, dogs and horses often mimicked each other's moves, jumping, pushing and even biting slightly and naughtily at each other. They also put themselves in weak and easily attacked positions, such as rolling on their backs, displaying their throats and stomachs — a strong sign that they were at ease and even showing their friendliness.

The two creatures also frequently mimicked each other's facial expressions, both adopting the relaxed, open mouths — a behavior that's been noted in wild, social primates(灵长类动物),but never between a pair of animals of different species.

1. What does the new research find about dogs and horses?
A.No animals have a closer relationship than them.
B.They can share fun with each other.
C.They have facial mimicry and a possible universal language of play.
D.Any other species can be their play partner.
2. What can we infer about interspecies' plays?
A.Scientists can never know the reasons for the plays.
B.The plays help animals to survive and socialize.
C.Knowing their evolution helps learn about animals' contexts.
D.The play between humans and pets isn't included.
3. What can we know from Palagi's investigation on canines and equids?
A.They are perfectly suitable for the study.
B.They play longer with humans joining m.
C.They show closeness with specific positions.
D.They mimic as the wild, social primates do.
4. According to the passage, what could be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A.More examples of facial mimicry.
B.Study on mimicry of the wild, social primates.
C.Facial expressions of different species.
D.A possible universal language of play.

【推荐2】Honeybees can't swim, and when their wings are wet, they can't fly, either. But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop into bodies of water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide toward land-like surfers who create and then ride their own waves.

As with many scientific advances-Isaac Newton's apple or Benjamin Franklin's lightning bolt-Dr. Roh's experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech's Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water's surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water.

Dr. Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local Pasadena honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to restrict each bee's bodily movement, allowing close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and producing a forward force. Bees get trapped on the surface because water is about three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It's a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity.

The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn't been documented in other insects and most semiaquatic (半水生) insects use their legs for propulsion (推进力), which is known as water-walking. It may have evolved in bees, they predicted.

Dr. Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees'surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea. “This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can't send a boat or helicopter,” Dr. Gharib said.

3. What does the underlined word “evolved” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Changed quickly.B.Developed gradually.
C.Became better.D.Became worse.
4. What can Roh's robot do according to the passage?
A.It can search wild animals in the forest fire.
B.It can travel across sky with the aid of helicopter.
C.It can get samples of the surface of the ocean by itself.
D.It can rescue survivors from underground after earthquake.

【推荐3】Scientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warming oceans from climate change.

Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks’ growing process. That meant the sharks were born earlier and very tired. The findings could be used in the study of other sharks, including those that give birth to live young.

The scientists studied 27 sharks. Some were raised in average summer water temperatures, about 27 degrees Celsius. Others were raised in higher temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. They found that the sharks raised in the warmest temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures. They also showed reduced energy levels.

Epaulette sharks can grow to a length of about one meter. Their name comes from large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing.

One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanie sharks and rays dropped more than 70 percent between 1970 and 2018. Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten shark.

Carolyn Wheeler is a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia. She was the lead author of the epaulette shark study. She said that while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough to survive for long in the wild.

She added that if the sharks are born smaller than usual “they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner—and they’re going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings.” The study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful management is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks.

1. In what aspect do the warmer conditions affect the baby sharks?
A.Their food.B.Their body weight.C.Their living habits.D.Their moving route.
2. How did the scientists carry out their study?
A.By studying former data.
B.By tracking sharks in the wild.
C.By collecting information about climate change.
D.By comparing sharks in waters of different temperatures
3. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.The origin of sharks’ names.B.The sharks’ appearance.
C.The threats to sharks’ survival.D.The sharks’ living environment.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Scientists Raise Sharks to Deal with Problems
B.Global Warming Has Reduced Shark Populations
C.Baby Sharks Struggle to Survive in Warming Oceans
D.Scientists Are Struggling to Save Sharks from Extinction
