The “Swim with Dolphins” tourist industry is becoming more popular every year with the increase of people’s income. After all, it can cost a large amount of money to have this kind of holiday experience. So tour operators try to place eager swimmers as near as possible to the dolphins by trying to predict where the dolphins will be.
Research has shown that while dolphins can move away if they do not want to interact (交流) with human swimmers, they do not like it at all if the swimmers slip into the water directly on top of them or if humans are in their path of travel. However, if swimmers enter the water to one side of them, the dolphins do not avoid the swimmers to the same extent.
In all cases, the dolphins seem to have become more sensitive to the presence of the swimmers. For dolphins, swimming among or with humans is not necessarily a high priority. This research has shown that only 19% of any group of dolphins will participate in interaction. Young dolphins are the most likely to interact; they do seem curious about being with humans. It is believed that they see humans as “entertainment” and that the interaction is a new and unusual experience for them.
It is frequently asked whether “Swim with Dolphins” tourism should be discontinued. The advice is that dolphins should be given enough periods of time throughout the day when they are not exposed to tourism. Permitted interactions should not be too disturbing to the dolphins since there could be mothers and calves (幼崽) present in dolphin groups. There should also be educational campaigns about the creatures and what is likely to cause danger to them.
It is not easy to explain to someone that they cannot fulfill their lifelong dreams because the dolphins are resting, or a mother dolphin and her calf are in the area. But if we are to enjoy these remarkable animals and not just use them for our entertainment, then we must carefully monitor the “Swim with Dolphins” industry worldwide.

The United Nations funded a study that shows that if you introduce 20 specific large mammals you can successfully restore a lot of the planet.
Some roles that species play in the environment are critical, so the loss of any of these can harm the world. So that means that on the other hand, re-introducing a species can produce positive results. When a few wolves were re-introduced to Yellowstone Park is one of the most cited examples. There is no doubt that the re-introduced wolves did restore the ecosystem.
Dr. Carly, a scientist, along with her team, was able to identify 13 herbivores and 7 predators that if re-introduced, could help restore a lot of what we’ve destroyed in nature. One species can benefit its environment in a dramatic way, helping create more soil insects and worms.
The team compared environments from 500 years ago to conditions of modern environments to know how travel and the industrial revolution have influenced the planet. And at last they figured out that only 16% of the world still has undamaged wild mammal communities and just 6% looks similar to what it looked like pre-1500.
They suggested that a 54% expansion in territory home to undamaged mammal communities can easily be accomplished, especially in South America and northern areas of Africa. In Europe, re-introducing beaver, bison, wolf, and reindeer could really make a dramatic impact. However, just wolves and wild horses could make a difference to Asia.
“Our recommendations may not be suitable everywhere in the world — local assessments will judge if hunting pressures or the lack of adequate preys mean other issues need addressing before reintroducing them. However, our findings show there are huge areas of the world that could be suitable for large mammal restoration if other factors are managed,” said Dr. Carly.

These bears have adapted to a high fat diet from ocean-going animals: they are rapid and dangerous swimmers, allowing them to easily catch animals as food. Each summer, as the pack ice starts to become smaller, polar bears draw closer to land to give birth to and care for babies. Many give up food during this period, hunting again when the ice returns and living on stored fat.
Pack ice is decreasing globally. When it does form, it disappears more quickly, and tends to be thinner as well. In 2004, several polar bear deaths by drowning were recorded. The bears had been trapped on faraway areas of floating ice, and had tried to swim for land. Due to the disappearance of the ice, they were tired and drowned before reaching shore safely. This problem is likely to grow as the pack ice becomes smaller.
The disappearance of the ice has other impacts for polar bears: they are losing their natural prey (猎物), who are also affected by the loss of habitat. The bears are not very good at catching land animals, and must compete with other species for these food sources. Land animals also don’t provide the high fat diet that polar bears need, which may lead to hunger. Hungry mothers may not be able to provide their babies with the nutrition needed, which will further contribute to the drop in polar bear population.
The deadly factors brought about by global warming put polar bears at risk. Drops in birth and survival rates have already been documented, and biologists are increasingly concerned about the animals’ odd behavior as a result of the loss of their natural habitat. Environmental organizations believe a global effort is needed to fight against global warming before it is too late for polar bears, as well as many other species that call Earth home.

“Humpback whale song is loud and travels far in the ocean,” said marine biologist Dunlop of the University of Queensland in Brisbane. She has long studied humpback whales and helped lead the new study. Her work has centered on humpbacks that reproduce near Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. She made an unexpected discovery as the number of whales sharply rose following the end of commercial whaling. “It was getting more difficult to actually find singers,” she said. “When there were fewer of them, there was a lot of singing. Now that there are lots of them there is no need to sing so much.”
Scientists first began to hear and study the songs of the humpback whales in the 1970s. They used underwater microphones to do so. Only male whales sing. Scientists think the whales sing to display their power.
Eastern Australia’s humpback whales came close to disappearing in the 1960s, when their number dropped to around 200. But over time the population began to regrow, climbing to about 27, 000 whales by 2015. That number is near pre-whaling levels. As the number of whales increase, their singing behaviors changed. Dunlop said while 2 in 10 males made wailing noises in 2004, 10 years later the number had dropped to 1 in 10.
It is said that humpback whales must have been singers long before whale fishing diminished their numbers. But the new study proves how necessary their beautiful songs were to their survival and recovery. Clearly singing became extremely valuable when their numbers were very low.
1. What is the probable reason why humpback whales sing according to the new study?A.Danger. | B.Hunting. | C.Hopelessness. | D.Loneliness. |
A.Humpback whales always keep silent. |
B.The more humpback whales, the less singing. |

Gather a team.
Students can do a lot on their own, but you’ll need adults for a project this big. Get teachers, parents, and even the headmaster interested. Don’t forget the maintenance staff-they know more about your school’s yard than anyone else and can give you lots of help.
Map your site.
Which part of the schoolyard can you turn into a habitat? Is there an unused corner of the playground? You’ll need to make a map of the area showing what is there now. Then you can figure out how you want to change it. For that, you need a plan.
Plan a habitat.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your area attractive to wildlife.
Food: Plant flowers and trees. These provide foods for birds, insects, and small animals. You can also add some feeders for birds. Where possible, stick with native plants-wild plants that grow naturally in your area. They need less care, which means less work for you.
Water: A small pond, a bird bath, or even a dish of clean water on the ground will attract birds.
Shelter: Trees make great escapes for birds. Tall grass and weeds are home to insects and some birds.
Reach for resources.
To make the habitat happen, you’ll need lots of plants, seeds, and other supplies. You’ll also need to buy or borrow tools and maybe even some heavy equipment. Now’s the time to reach out for donations. Start by asking your parent-teacher organization. Then go to garden clubs, garden stores (they might give you a discount), local government agencies, and businesses. If they can’t donate supplies or money, ask if they can donate workers!
Build your design.
Now you can dig in. Set a date, and get growing!
1. What is the part of “Plan a habitat” mainly about?A.How to attract wildlife to the habitat. |

● Fiddling (好动) — Playing with your watch or a pen looks like you’re bored or impatient.
● Clock watching — It looks like you’re to move on to something else.
● Tapping — Tapping your feet or fingers suggests you are impatient or nervous.
● Staring — An unblinking (不眨眼的) stare conveys threatening or violent behaviour.
● Legs crossed or body hunched (弓背,耸肩) — Closing up your body profile — becoming smaller — looks like you lack confidence.
● Arms crossed — If you keep your arms folded during communication, you appear to be defending yourself against the others.
● Touching your face — When you have your hand in front of your mouth, you appear very shy.
● Rubbing your nose, looking away — People who are lying often rub their nose or look away when speaking.
● No eye contact — If you won’t look the other speaker in the eye, you seem to have low interest or a lack of confidence. (Don’t forget staring above.)
How you communicate with your body language is just as important as what you say. Watch your body language and control the unconscious messages you might be sending.

Some of the earliest adopters of the unmanned store model have been in China. For example, the F5 Future Store, a convenience store without cashiers, opened in Guangzhou in 2014. In this store, the products are dispensed by special machines. Customers pay for them using their smartphones.
Amazon, a world leader in online shopping, has also entered the cashier-free space. Its first such supermarket, Amazon Go, opened in Seattle in February 2020 and offered over 5, 000 items for purchase. In just one year, Amazon has added twenty-five more Amazon Go stores across the country.
The cashier-free model isn't suitable for all retail stores, however. One reason is the absence of the personal touch. Since there is no cashier, the connection between customer and cashier is missing. For this reason, the cashier free model may not be appropriate for department stores where customers are used to asking cashiers about products and getting other assistance from them.
The cashier free model also has an effect on add-on sales. In stores with cashiers, customers commonly have to wait in line to check out. While in line, they often grab extra items like candy or magazines that are displayed near the register. Cashier-free stores aim to shorten or eliminate checkout lines altogether. Customers in these stores like the fact that they can check out faster without waiting in line. The stores, however, lose add-on sales.

Then, consider this: you might be in a state of sub-health(亚健康). Sub-health, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline(界限)state between health and disease.
According to the survey by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of sub-healthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam-week.
Symptoms include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia, anger, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from sub-health, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements — vitamins and other elements that are important to the body.
Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化道). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding sub-health.

However, not everyone in the USA is a native speaker of English. Most immigrants (移民)are speakers of other languages. There are hundreds of communities around the USA where English is not the most commonly used languages. Chinese,Italian,German,Greek,Spanish and French are all spoken in various communities in the USA. Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language after English. It is widely spoken in New York and across the southern part of the country. For speakers of other languages, learning English is important, but teaching people to speak English as a second language was given little attention. Non-English speakers were expected to “pick up ” the language by meeting with others in public. Recently, this has changed.
Today, most large public schools and community colleges have ESL(English as a Second Language )programs; American English teachers feel that English students should learn the language the way they will use it. Therefore,ESL programs offer different English lessons to different students. Some programs teach students to communicate in English in public.
