The “Swim with Dolphins” tourist industry is becoming more popular every year with the increase of people’s income. After all, it can cost a large amount of money to have this kind of holiday experience. So tour operators try to place eager swimmers as near as possible to the dolphins by trying to predict where the dolphins will be.

Research has shown that while dolphins can move away if they do not want to interact (交流) with human swimmers, they do not like it at all if the swimmers slip into the water directly on top of them or if humans are in their path of travel. However, if swimmers enter the water to one side of them, the dolphins do not avoid the swimmers to the same extent.

In all cases, the dolphins seem to have become more sensitive to the presence of the swimmers. For dolphins, swimming among or with humans is not necessarily a high priority. This research has shown that only 19% of any group of dolphins will participate in interaction. Young dolphins are the most likely to interact; they do seem curious about being with humans. It is believed that they see humans as “entertainment” and that the interaction is a new and unusual experience for them.

It is frequently asked whether “Swim with Dolphins” tourism should be discontinued. The advice is that dolphins should be given enough periods of time throughout the day when they are not exposed to tourism. Permitted interactions should not be too disturbing to the dolphins since there could be mothers and calves (幼崽) present in dolphin groups. There should also be educational campaigns about the creatures and what is likely to cause danger to them.

It is not easy to explain to someone that they cannot fulfill their lifelong dreams because the dolphins are resting, or a mother dolphin and her calf are in the area. But if we are to enjoy these remarkable animals and not just use them for our entertainment, then we must carefully monitor the “Swim with Dolphins” industry worldwide.

1. What makes “Swim with Dolphins” tourism popular?
A.The local government’s encouragement.
B.The improvement of people’s living standards.
C.The increasing number of tourists.
D.The high profits of the industry.
2. Why are young dolphins more likely to swim with humans?
A.They do this out of curiosity.B.They like humans better.
C.They are less sensitive.D.They prefer new things by nature.
3. What does the author suggest the “Swim with Dolphins” industry do in Paragraph 4?
A.Make people know the hidden threat to dolphins.
B.Strictly limit the expansion of the industry.
C.Avoid interaction with young dolphins.
D.Expose dolphins to tourists only in the daytime.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章说明了一项研究结果表明:重新引进消失的动物有助于生态系统恢复。介绍了相关的研究和研究发现。

【推荐1】There are many ecosystems that are truly suffering from degradation. The solution is that they can be restored by re-introducing several animal species. The United Nations funded a study that shows that if you introduce 20 specific large mammals you can successfully restore a lot of the planet.

Some roles that species play in the environment are critical, so the loss of any of these can harm the world. So that means that on the other hand, re-introducing a species can produce positive results. When a few wolves were re-introduced to Yellowstone Park is one of the most cited examples. There is no doubt that the re-introduced wolves did restore the ecosystem.

Dr. Carly, a scientist, along with her team, was able to identify 13 herbivores and 7 predators that if re-introduced, could help restore a lot of what we’ve destroyed in nature. One species can benefit its environment in a dramatic way, helping create more soil insects and worms.

The team compared environments from 500 years ago to conditions of modern environments to know how travel and the industrial revolution have influenced the planet. And at last they figured out that only 16% of the world still has undamaged wild mammal communities and just 6% looks similar to what it looked like pre-1500.

They suggested that a 54% expansion in territory home to undamaged mammal communities can easily be accomplished, especially in South America and northern areas of Africa. In Europe, re-introducing beaver, bison, wolf, and reindeer could really make a dramatic impact. However, just wolves and wild horses could make a difference to Asia.

“Our recommendations may not be suitable everywhere in the world — local assessments will judge if hunting pressures or the lack of adequate preys mean other issues need addressing before reintroducing them. However, our findings show there are huge areas of the world that could be suitable for large mammal restoration if other factors are managed,” said Dr. Carly.

1. What role did the wolves play in Yellowstone Park?
A.Protecting nature from being destroyed.B.Keeping the balance of the ecosystem.
C.Creating better soil for other animals.D.Attracting more visits to the famous park.
2. Why did the team compare environments in different periods?
A.To find out some suitable large mammals.
B.To find out how travel and the industrial revolution have affected the earth.
C.To summarize the influence of human’s activities.
D.To find out the nature of the undamaged environment.
3. What animal could probably restore large parts of Asia?
A.Reindeer.B.Bison.C.Wolf.D.Beaver.
4. What is advised to do before animals are reintroduced ?
A.Make a law to ban hunting.B.Provide sufficient food for them.
C.Solve other environmental problems.D.Assess the potential surroundings.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了由于全球变暖,北极熊正处于危险之中。

【推荐2】In the wild, polar bears spend much of their lives wandering pack ice (浮冰群) in search of food. These bears have adapted to a high fat diet from ocean-going animals: they are rapid and dangerous swimmers, allowing them to easily catch animals as food. Each summer, as the pack ice starts to become smaller, polar bears draw closer to land to give birth to and care for babies. Many give up food during this period, hunting again when the ice returns and living on stored fat.

Pack ice is decreasing globally. When it does form, it disappears more quickly, and tends to be thinner as well. In 2004, several polar bear deaths by drowning were recorded. The bears had been trapped on faraway areas of floating ice, and had tried to swim for land. Due to the disappearance of the ice, they were tired and drowned before reaching shore safely. This problem is likely to grow as the pack ice becomes smaller.

The disappearance of the ice has other impacts for polar bears: they are losing their natural prey (猎物), who are also affected by the loss of habitat. The bears are not very good at catching land animals, and must compete with other species for these food sources. Land animals also don’t provide the high fat diet that polar bears need, which may lead to hunger. Hungry mothers may not be able to provide their babies with the nutrition needed, which will further contribute to the drop in polar bear population.

The deadly factors brought about by global warming put polar bears at risk. Drops in birth and survival rates have already been documented, and biologists are increasingly concerned   about the animals’ odd behavior as a result of the loss of their natural habitat. Environmental organizations believe a global effort is needed to fight against global warming before it is too late for polar bears, as well as many other species that call Earth home.

1. In which season are baby polar bears born?
A.Spring.B.Summer.C.Autumn.D.Winter.
2. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The disappearance of the ice has negative effects on polar bears.
B.Polar bears have to compete with other species for food sources.
C.Land animals don’t provide the high fat diet that polar bears need.
D.Hungry bear mothers can’t provide their babies with the nutrition needed.
3. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Why is pack ice becoming smaller?
B.What measures can we take to protect polar bears?
C.Are polar bears in danger from global warming?
D.Is global warming becoming more and more serious?
