However, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) have created robots    1     can create custommade(定做的)wooden furniture. They say the robots will not take the place of human carpenters,     2     instead allow them to do more important     3     (task) such as design. It is hoped that the robots will also greatly ensure     4    (safe).

“Every year thousands of carpenters injure their hands and fingers when    5    (do) dangerous work such as sawing,”the team said.

The MIT team used technology to create what they call the AutoSaw. AutoSaw could let people customize different items that can then be made     6     the help of the robots. The robots will cut the wood     7    (correct), adding the holes needed to fit it together. Compared to traditional machines     8    (use)by carpenters, AutoSaw is much     9    (cheap).

Researcher Adriana Schulz said:“Our goal is     10    (let)users make what best fits their needs.” She believes it will help people to create better designed furniture.

This ensures that the clothes made     3     it remain clean. But the scientists are not yet ready to make public the     4     (detail) information of this "miracle" chemical.

A well-known French company recently launched     5     new range of jackets that have Teflon in them. Teflon is the plastic coating on non-stick cooking pans,    6     has a special characteristic: No reaction to anything. As a result, dirt and water slip away from the Teflon fabric, as     7    (easy) as oil slips out of a Teflon-coated pan.

American scientists have gone a step     8    (far). They have added insecticide (杀虫剂) to the fabric that kills mosquitoes on contact. 【推荐2】A South Korean biomedical start-up called Ybrain has developed a headband that they claim will offer relief from the symptoms of    1    (depress). The device, called Mindd, works    2    (use) a technique called transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS). Here, a low-voltage electrical current    3    (apply) to specific areas in the brain via electrodes (电极) placed on the skull.

tDCS is not new-the basic    4    (principle) have been understood since the early 19th century. But the past decade or so has seen increased interest in its use in treating neurological and psychiatric conditions, and a 2016 meta-analysis of hundreds of studies concluded that it’s “possibly or probably effective”    5    a treatment for depression.

tDCS equipment can stimulate particular brain regions either ‘anodally’ (increasing neuronal activity)    6    ‘cathodally’ (decreasing neuronal activity). The Mindd headset applies anodal stimulation via electrodes in the headband to the frontal lobe, an area    7    decreased activity is associated with depressive disorders. Mindd is not intended as a DIY solution: patients would use it in    8    own homes, and all data regarding treatment would be sent automatically to their doctor.

The headband is    9    (current) undergoing clinical trials at Harvard Medical School, and at 12 hospitals in South Korea. Early results are said to be    10    (promise), and if all goes well, Ybrain hopes to market the device to health providers by 2019.

It can take a little imagination to see how some innovations might change an economy. Not so with the latest Al tools. It is easy — from a writer’s perspective, uncomfortably so —     1    (think) of contexts in which something like ChatGPT, a clever chatbot which    2    (take) the web by storm since its release in November 2022, could either dramatically boost a human worker’s productivity or replace them outright. The ChatGPT in its name stands for “generative pre-trained transformer”,     3     is a particular kind of language model.

4    (feed) huge amounts of human-created text, ChatGPT looks for statistical regularities in this data, learns what words and phrases     5    (associate)with others and therefore predict what words should come next in any given sentence and     6     sentences fit together. The result is a machine that can persuasively mimic (模仿) human language.

This capacity     7     mimicry allows ChatGPT to write essays and poetry, think up jokes, formulate code, and answer questions whether to a child or an expert. Its performance is so astonishing     8     many over the past months have been both celebrating and panicking. “Essays are dead,” wrote the cognitive scientist Tim Kietzmann. Others claim that it will finish off Google as a search engine. And the program     9     thinks it may be able to replace humans in jobs from insurance agent to court reporter.

Nevertheless, there is an     10    (underlie) problem that faces any form of artificial intelligence. A computer manipulates (处理) symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules with which to transform one string of symbols into another, or to recognize statistical patterns. But it does not specify what those symbols or patterns mean. To a computer, meaning is irrelevant ChatGPT ”knows" what appears meaningful to humans, but not what is meaningful to itself
