With exams just around the corner, now is a good time to explore some of UCL’s lesser-known study spaces and get down to some revision. Here are some good choices for you.
UCL Senate House Hub
UCL Senate House Hub opened in 2015 and provides 144 study spaces. What’s more, you can check how many spaces are available online before you head to the place. Located on the 3rd floor of the South Block of Senate House, the center has room for individual and group study in traditional library spaces, as well as armchairs and wi-fi coverage.
UCL Eastman Dental Library
The newly redecorated UCL Eastman Dental Library is located halfway along Gray's Inn Road and is open from Monday to Friday, 9:00am 800pm. The library has 72 study spaces, and many IT facilities(equipment with access to the Internet). The library also has a study room for meetings and a computer cluster room with a whiteboard.
UCL Language & Speech Science Library
UCL Language & Speech Science Library(LASS)has disabled access and has recently been decorated to add extra study spaces. With only 49 spaces, LASS is smaller than most other UCL libraries and tends to fill up quickly, so get there early to avoid disappointment.
Senate House Library
This one may be cheating as the Senate House Library is not technically a UCL library. However, all UCL students and staff can register for free membership online. With millions of books and journals, Senate House Library offers some places a little less used by UCL students but perfect for students who want to focus on some hard work.

They try slipping into the ocean to cool off, but sharks drive them back onto the boat. At night, they use a single wet suit to keep warm.
This is a real story of two American boys. Driscoll and his best friend, 18-year-old Josh Long, were found six days later and more than 100 miles from where they had set off from Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, on April 24. The boys had lost a lot of water and were tired, but otherwise in pretty good shape.
They set out fishing on a 4.3-meter sailboat on a windy day when the National Weather Service had warned small boats to stay out of the water, but they didn’t care. They realized they were in trouble almost immediately and tried to swim back to shore, pulling the boat along with them. Within hours, they were far out to sea.
“We lost our fishing equipment, ” Driscoll said. “So we couldn’t catch any fish. ” The boys’ hopes faded with each day passing. They stood on their boat every time they saw another boat, waving and shouting, but without success. One night they were woken up by water coming into the boat. A large ship was very close to them.
A coast guard boat set out to look for them. The boys got up and made some noise. This time, they were heard.
“What we have is a completely surprising story of survival that’s going to be studied for years to come, ” said Richard Goerling, Long’s uncle, “I think the boys have a book to write. ”

The researchers looked at how long the virus that causes the new coronavirus can survive on different things from cardboard to copper. The results show that the COVID-19 virus appears to survive longest on plastic and steel, where it can survive for two to three days. It did the least well on copper, lasting up to four hours, and can survive on cardboard for a day—up to 24 hours.
As well as looking at the virus' survival ability on certain things, the team looked at how long the virus can remain active in the air. Tests suggest it can remain in the air for up to three hours, explaining how mass gatherings can lead to multiple infections. This also means it is spread through people's coughs and sneezes in small drops that can remain present in the air and on surfaces.
The virus has been difficult to control and has caused a higher number of deaths than the SARS outbreak of 2003. The study's authors say there may be many reasons for this including the rate that asymptomatic carriers can spread the virus before symptoms develop. According to the WHO, it is not known how long the new coronavirus survives on surfaces but it seems that they can survive for several hours and days. The exact amount of time a virus can last depends on conditions like temperature and the amount of water in the air.
The WHO states: "If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with soap or something that can kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.”
1. On which thing does the COVID-19 virus have the shortest survival time?A.Copper. | B.Plastic. | C.Wood. | D.Cardboard. |
A.Don't cough in public. | B.Avoid mass gathering. |
C.Stay away from virus. | D.Don't touch strangers. |
A.Because people know little about this virus. | B.Because the weather conditions are changeable. |
C.Because this virus can survive for a long time | D.Because there are some asymptomatic carriers. |
A.It is necessary to clean every surface. | B.Cleaning hands can protect your mouth and eyes. |

While studying, I began exploring Mexico, crossing the country several times by bus. Now I work as a photojournalist in Mexico and along the border, documenting desperate situations that rarely seem to improve for everyday Mexicans. Though necessary and important, news stories don’t reflect the Mexico that I fell for and that is home to so many people I love. An assignment focused on the country’s natural beauty was a welcome reprieve.
I had three nights to film the magical scene in the forest. According to our guides, visitors are usually not allowed to photograph the fireflies because the presence of artificial light from electronics can affect their habits. As I started shooting, I adjusted my exposures constantly to account for the fading light. In order to get the composition that I wanted, I placed my tripod((三脚架)) on a steep, rocky path and had to steady it during the long exposures. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the fireflies were very interested in the camera and, by extension, in me. I stood completely still while they crawled(爬) all over me—my arms, my hair, my face. From what I observed, peak firefly presence happens for only about 20 minutes each night, so I had time for just a few tries.
On the last night everything came together. The weather cooperated. I had improved my method for focusing and composing in the dark with quick flashes from a powerful flashlight—and I’d grown accustomed to insects on my face.
I was rewarded with the image you see here. Each dot of light is one of several bursts that a firefly makes as it travels within a 30-second exposure. You can trace the insects’ paths: Some make small loops(环), like those in the bottom center of the frame, while others move steadily in one direction or another.
1. How did the author feel about the editor’s request?A.upset. | B.delighted. | C.confused. | D.embarrassed. |

I wanted something that I could grow quickly, that wouldn't take up a lot of space and that wouldn't get too big. I ran this experiment in early fall in Maryland. So I knew I needed a plant that could grow when it's cool. I picked radishes (小萝卜), which grow well in the early fall or spring. Some varieties can grow a full radish in only 21 days.
I kept 12 of the pots and one pack of seeds for myself. I gave the other 12 pots and the other packet of seeds — along with some fertilizer and soil — to my editor, Sarah. This was to provide an additional control for location. After all, what if my yard just happens to be much better for growing plants? What if it's worse? By dividing the plants up between my yard and Sarah's, I hoped to make sure that any difference with the plants came from the fertilizer.
Sarah and I planted our seeds. Sometimes, seeds don’t sprout (发芽). So we carefully planted four evenly (相等地) spaced seeds in each pot. Six of my pots (and six of Sarah’s) served as controls — pots that would not get fertilizer. Our other six were treated with fertilizer. For each of us, this added up to 24 control seeds, and 24 seeds that would get fertilizer.
We watered all the plants equally with clean water every other day (unless it rained). Once a week, we applied fertilizer to half the pots. We also took pictures every day, so we could see the plants change over time. As I expected, many of our seeds didn't sprout. In fact, only about a fourth of mine sprouted. Sarah has a greener thumb. She successfully grew half of hers.
1. Why does the author want to grow such a plant?A.To enjoy it. | B.To make it very cool. |
C.To take up more space, | D.To make an experiment. |
A.From the fertilizer used. | B.From the different way. |

A.She's fond of growing plants. | B.She's smarter than the author. |
C.She has a gifted for growing plants. | D.She's a devoted and friendly woman. |

In the study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, a group of researchers collected tears from a variety of animals including macaws, owls, parrots, hawks, sea turtles, tortoises and caimans. Additionally, they collected tears from 10 healthy humans.
The tear samples were then examined and were found to be similar when it came to electrolyte (电解质) composition with one slight difference being in that bird and reptile (爬行动物) tears had a slightly higher concentration than other species. Additionally, in the tears of the sea turtles and owls, there were higher levels of protein found.
Where variation eventually did come in was when the researchers examined how tears became solid as they dried. They found that the tears from different animals form totally different patterns, much like snowflakes (雪花) each has individual and unique shape. They noticed that the turtles’ and caimans’ tears were especially different. They owed this to their adaptation (适应) in some way in order to be able to better function in their habitats.
One note that the researchers made was that the tear samples they collected were from captive (圈养的) animals, which could be completely different from animals found in the wild. However, the study still is one of the biggest studies of its kind in comparing tear compositions across varying species.
Lead author Arianna P. Oria from Brazil said, “This discovery is vital for understanding the evolution and adaptation processes, and is essential for the discovery of drugs to treat eye diseases. This knowledge helps in the understanding of the evolution and adaption of these species, as well as in their conservation. ”
