【推荐3】Having given good responses to all questions, Thomas, with a perfect resume, failed his job interview last week. Christine, the manager responsible for the interview, showed an actual preference for Thomas but decided to offer the job to her second choice, adding that the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy”.
“It was not until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person.” Christine admitted later. “What I didn’t known at that time was that the candidate’s odd behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a family where respect for those in authority was shown by turning away your eyes. I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact, not realizing it was cultural,” Christine says.
As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces become more diverse, it is increasingly essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions. Mindsets helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots.
Unexpected advantage
At a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can have no personal biases have an obvious advantage. A real estate agent illustrates the positive influence of Mindsets—“Coached by Mindsets for two weeks, I acquired how to own a diversified workforce—I employed people from different cultures and skill sets. When the real estate market began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to stay in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profession.”
Strategic power
“An open mind about diversity not only improves organizations from inside, it is profitable as well.” Such comment is from a customer service representative, who shows how an inclusive attitude can improve sales. It wasn’t until her boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to understand how important inclusiveness was to customer service. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the phone. As a result, our customer base has increased.”
Gender unawareness
Gorden is an account executive who attended one of the workshops. “Through some of the lessons, I discovered my personal bias.” he recalls. “I had a management position open in my department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. Had I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My assumption would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to be home with her children and not travel. Thanks to the workshop, I have learnt to make decisions based on fairness.”

Q1: Why did you choose architecture as a career?
A: When I was young, I knew I wanted a job that was challenging and would allow me to keep learning. I considered chemical research, but I found myself bored by its limited range. I met a friend in college who studied architecture, and I was excited to learn how architecture combines art, math, and science. Whether working on historic structures or new projects, to me architecture is limitless, difficult, and rewarding.
Q2: What are the best subjects to study at school if you want to be an architect?
A: The education of an architect centers on the studio, where communicating ideas is key. Communication includes drawing; writing, speaking, discussing, and model making. To support their work in the studio, students must study a variety of different subjects, including both general classes and architectural classes. I was very lucky to have spent four years in liberal arts (文科) and science before studying architecture. This means that I am able to draw on a wide range of learning experiences.
Q3: Do you have any advice for someone that wants to be an architect?
A: Keep your eyes on the goal. When I was at university, we joked that studying architecture was harder than military training! We had long hours, tough assignments, and difficult exams. You will go through a lot of difficult times when you are studying to be an architect, but remember to enjoy life and take time out for hobbies and sports.

Day 1, Saturday6 a. m. : Hike the Four Mile Trail to Glacier Point. The 9. 6-mile round trip will take six to eight hours with rest stops, so plan accordingly. Leave early to beat the heat and enjoy the sunrise.
Pro tip: Don’t forget to look down-the view of the valley is truly jaw-dropping.1 p. m. : Hike to Vernal Fall. If you’re looking for lunch, a tasty and efficient spot is Curry Village Pizza Deck. It’s a nice cool-down hike after your morning workout and offers easy access to year-round falls.
4 p. m. : Learn some history at Yosemite Valley Visitor Center. Every national park visit requires a stop at the visitor center to learn about park’s history and main features. Here, you can check out the Yosemite Village as well, but the real secret is the free bike share program. Download the app and grab a pair of wheels here for your evening exploration.
Day 2, Sunday6 a. m. : Drive up the picturesque Tioga Road. While your feet are recovering from yesterday’s mileage, take a leisurely drive up Tioga Road. Along the 45 miles to Tenaya Lake, take photos at the many viewpoints, but especially at Olmsted Point, which has a less-visited but very cool perspective on Half Dome. Have breakfast or lunch alongside the blue waters of Yosemite’s largest lake before heading back toward the valley.
3 p. m. : Complete your trip with a visit to Yosemite Climbing Museum in Mariposa. At a last stop, visit the charming historical town of Mariposa to check out the long-overdue Yosemite Climbing Museum opened in 2021. Quick Guide on China Train Travel
If you’re looking for an affordable and comfortable way to get around China, train travel is the way to go. Getting train information and cheap train tickets has never been easier. Online train ticket booking makes it easy for travelers to look through China’s train timetable, compare train fares, and look for ticket availability. Once you’ ve found a suitable train, you can book online and pick your tickets up at the train station or get them delivered to your home or hotel. Train tickets can be booked online a minimum of 35 minutes and a maximum of 60 days before departure.
How to choose train types
When you’re buying China train tickets online, you’ll notice that the journey duration (期) differs depending on which type of train you choose. China train types can be recognized by their letter codes G, D and C trains are high-speed trains, while Z, T and K are slower or overnight trains. China’s high-speed trains run between Chinese provincial capitals and first-tier Chinese cities. G trains (high-speed trains, standing for gāotiě) are China’ s bullet trains — the fastest trains with a maximum speed of 400 km/ h. Tickets for these trains are the most expensive.
How to buy train tickets
Unless you can read Chinese, there are only two ways to make train reservations in China:
— Online train ticket booking with a travel agency (up to 60 days before departure).
— At the train station / local ticket agency with your passport (up to 58 days before departure).
How to read train tickets
When reading your train ticket, please take note of the Chinese characters and Pinyin printed next to your departure / arrival city. Directions (North, South, East, and West) appear in Pinyin (Bei, Nan, Dong, and Xi), not English. Please make sure you are going to the correct train station.

However, Zawawi warns that if symptoms are not reversed (倒转) in the first 72 hours the damage could become permanent. Due to findings in previous studies about it, Zawawi says that the team of researchers has suspected that something may stop this repair process; therefore, the team set out to determine if caffeine could be a contributing cause to hearing loss. According to the Medical Daily, the researchers tested what they suspected on female guinea pigs(FGP) (豚鼠).
To perform the test, 24 female guinea pigs were split into three equal groups with each group exposed in different levels to caffeine, and loud noises. The researchers found that the guinea pigs subjected to only sound had their full hearing recovered by day eight. However, the guinea pigs that were subjected to both caffeine and loud noise never fully regained their hearing. Therefore, the researchers concluded that caffeine is a likely contributing cause to permanent hearing loss.
“This research confirms that while a cup of coffee may seem appealing after a long night at a loud concert, drinking caffeine produces more of a risk than benefit when it comes to a person's hearing. Although further research is required to understand the effect on humans, the results are promising," says Zawawi. If the research proves successful, the removal of caffeine from your diet following noise exposure could prevent permanent hearing loss as the body will be more able to repair itself naturally.

This UNESCO World Heritage basilica(长方形基督教堂),which is Barcelona’s most visited tourist attraction, began building in 1882 based on a design by architect Francisco Lozano. However, when he stepped down, architect Antoni Gaudi took over the design in 1883.The building won’t be finished until 2026—one hundred years after the architect was killed by a streetcar in the city. His body was buried in a room under the floor of the Sagrada Familia.
To get its paperwork rubber stamped, the church authorities have agreed to finally pay the government a 36 million fee for a building permit. Gaudi was told to get the paperwork processed, but the architect failed to do so—proceeding with construction. The money from the church’s permit will be used to upgrade transport links and beautify the area.
Gaudi played an active role in directing the construction of the Sagrada Familia until his death in 1926.He would often request that work be modified and adjusted until it was exactly what he had in mind. However, interpretation of the designs by present day architects is particularly challenging because of the nature of the existing designs.
Gaudi and his works have become symbols of Barcelona, the capital city of Catalonia, northeast Spain. The unfinished building is called a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and it is perhaps the most unique and mysterious building in the style ever constructed. The popularity of the site with tourists has helped fund the push to complete the church and pay for the paperwork.

This is very unusual in a state where Korean Americans are less than 1 percent of the population. The interactions of the Korean American students at GBS were the subject of an article in Asian Week magazine.
Different Korean American students react differently to being in a high school were most students are white. Professor Pyong Gap Min, an expert on Korean life in America, believes that Korean Americans in this situation can sometimes feel inhibited or ashamed of their Korean identity. Asian Week interviewed a number of GBS students, and each had a different attitude.
Alice 18 years old
I used to spend time only with Korean American friends. Although I felt secure with those friends, I found myself motivated to form closer relationship with non-Koreans, too. I felt I was missing out on new experiences and challenges.
Paul 16 years old
I have some Korean American friends, but I spend most of my time with white friends. I’m often the only Asian American in the group, but I don’t mind. What I like about the white culture is that I can be more radical. I can be as loud and funny as I want to be. I don’t see as much of that among the Asian students.
John 17 years old
In junior high school, most of my friends were white. After coming to GBS, my sense of my Korean American identity was restored, and I decided to have mainly Korean American friends. I feel that my Korean American friends and I mainly understand each other better. For example, we understand about severe parental pressures to succeed at school; I felt my white friends couldn’t really understand.
Without belittle(轻视)the importance of what these students had to say, it’s important to remember that their opinions at this phase of their lives ate bound to change as they grow into adulthood. But these honest opinions can help us better understand issues of culture relations, and their honesty might help Americans from different cultural groups to get along better in the future.
