His designs emphasize the connection of housing, shopping and public space. A popular claim by the advocates of self-driving cars is that not only will they lead to fewer cars, faster communications and a thorough rethinking of cities where finding a place to park is no longer a priority.
Mr. Calthorpe rejects the ideas of tech industry predictors who say personal autonomous vehicles will soon be the solution to urban problems like traffic jams. He is not opposed to autonomous vehicles. Mr. Calthorpe’s quarrel is with the idea that the widespread adoption of personally owned self-driving cars will solve transportation problem. In fact, he worries it will lead to more urban jams.
This year, Mr. Calthorpe challenged Silicon Valley to take another look at its housing and transportation problem in a proposal in which he asked: “Can more houses and streets solve the San Francisco Bay Area housing crisis?” The Valley’s housing crisis can be explained in data that shows that since 2010, the region has added 11 jobs for every new home built; the middlesized house price has reached $934,000; and rents have gone up by 60 percent since 2012. One of the consequences of the growing imbalance between housing and jobs is the increasing traffic jams, according to an Urban Footprint report.
To avoid the traffic jams, Mr. Calthorpe puts forward a plan which requires efficient mass transportation. He has proposed an alternative—autonomous rapid transportation or ART—using fleets (车队) of self-driving tracks in reserved lanes on main roads like E1 Camino Real. Those lanes would allow the vehicles to travel faster and require a lower level of autonomous technology. And the trucks could travel separately or be connected together.

1. Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE is the best smartwatch money can buy right now, but it’s only the right choice for you if you own an iPhone. If you do have an iPhone, you may wonder why the Apple Watch 6 doesn’t take our title of the very best smartwatch? That’s because the Apple Watch SE does almost everything that smartwatch can, but for a much lower price.
The Apple Watch SE comes with a high-end design and a great range of features that you can’t get on every other smartwatch right now. The battery life isn’t the best on the market based on our tests, and there isn’t an always-on display, but if you’re after a great value for money choice for your next wrist companion you should opt for the Apple Watch SE.
2. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a wearable that had a lot of publicity around it. This sees Samsung return to Wear OS, having used Tizen for recent models. But this isn’t Wear OS as you might know it — it’s a new take on the operating system, designed alongside Samsung, and with a very Tizen-like skin on the top.
Add to that great performance, what we found to be a comfortable fit, a lightweight build, and interesting new body composition measurement tools, and this makes for a top smartwatch, especially for those interested in tracking their health and fitness.
But with some of its features requiring a Samsung phone, and no support for iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 isn’t something we can recommend to everyone. It also arguably isn’t worth upgrading to if you already own a recent Galaxy Watch.
3. Apple Watch 6
The Apple Watch 6 hasn’t taken the top spot in our best smartwatch list, but this is the absolute best device you can get if you own an iPhone. Why isn’t it ranked above the Apple Watch SE? Because it’s a lot more expensive than that option.
It isn’t a huge upgrade over the Apple Watch 5 though. There are new features like blood oxygen monitoring and an upgraded chipset, but largely it’s a similar device with the exact same screen and design.
That said, if you’re after an Apple Watch this is the best from the company ever, we just found the lack of any major upgrades a slight disappointment.
1. What is a disadvantage of the Apple Watch SE?A.It has a poor range of features | B.The display is always on |
C.It is poor value for money | D.The battery life is not outstanding |
A.It doesn’t support iPhones | B.It is comfortable |
C.It can’t be recommended to everyone | D.It uses a different operating system |
A.The blood oxygen monitor | B.The screen |
C.The price | D.The chipset |

Postcards from summer camps. And so many photos:birthdays, graduations, weddings and trips to wonderful places.
After my father’s death,I found many handwritten pity letters from his friends. Rereading them once a year,I am transported back to the time I miss so much. Of course,I received many emails about Dad as well, but I wouldn’t begin to know how or where to find them. Besides, personal messages are more meaningful when presented in the hand of the sender.
My kids, now in their 20s,have mostly digital keepsakes. Increasingly they rely on Facebook to store memories. Their letters from college, sent by email, are long gone. Many photos, never printed, have disappeared. I really worry that for them.
In Andrew Hoskins’new book Digital Memory Studies,he concludes,“Despite the gradual disappearance of photographs, letters and other objects that are reminders of people and past experiences, their keeping is like holding on to those people and experiences. ”Digital items offer nothing of the kind.
Mark B. McKinley explained that collecting physical memorabilia(值得纪念的事物)can serve as a means of control to bring out a comfort zone in one’s life, calming fears and easing worries. It’s no wonder that children are fond of collecting things—it's important to their development.
One mother says,“My Son collects pieces of broken stones. ”The kid might become a great geologist or a successful businessman. But will his mom print out a photo of that unique collection? Will his degree in geology be memorialized on paper,or will he be given a digital diploma? And will he collect his first paycheck or will he be paid by direct deposit?
1. What can be concluded from the first three paragraphs?A.People don’t collect physical objects. |

【推荐2】Plants: we eat them, juice them, weave them — and now it seems we can mine them too!
After a successful experiment on the island of Borneo, Botany Professor Alan Baker and a group of researchers want to introduce phytomining (harvesting minerals from plants) as a better, partial substitute for traditional mining.
Phytomining means collecting metal from live plants. However, this can only be done with a group of plants known as “hyperaccumulators.” They naturally attract and absorb minerals through their roots and then store huge, pure concentrations of these minerals in their bodies. The metal can then be extracted from the plant’s sap (液), oil, or sometimes even live tissue.
The term “phytomining” was coined in 1983 by Rufus Chaney of the US Department of Agriculture, who had worked with Baker in early phytomining experiments. But the idea of plant-mining was actually thought of 500 years ago by German scientist Georgius Agricola, who smelted leaves to identify the metals underground.
Baker and his colleagues see a lot of potential in phytomining. Not only can it help meet the growing global demand for metals, but is also a way of undoing some of that damage to the environment by traditional mining.
One of the biggest problems with traditional mining is that it pollutes the surrounding area. Phytomining can extract that metal waste, plus planting the hyperaccumulators would regrow the deforested areas created by mining operations.
Aside from this, if phytomining is able to replace part of traditional mining, then there would be fewer instances of bad mining practices like abandoned mines, which pollute the nearby waters. Also, since phytomining provides metal that is already naturally pure, there is no need to use huge amounts of energy to purify the ore (矿石).
However, phytomining has its drawbacks. Harvesting plants on a large scale is expensive today, compared to traditional mining. Besides, plants can be wiped out by diseases or unexpected weather conditions.
However, there are many reasons to consider phytomining. It gives us the hope that our advancement doesn’t mean sacrificing Mother Earth.
1. What makes hyperaccumulators different from other plants?A.The ability to take in and store metals. |
B.The ability to process various nutrition. |
C.Their roots deep through the earth. |
D.Their oil extracted from live plant tissue. |
A.It can pollute the nearby area. |
B.It can waste huge amounts of energy. |
C.It can do harm to our climate. |
D.It can be affected by bad weather. |
A.The term came up even 500 years ago. |
B.Its potential mainly lies in lower cost, compared to traditional mining. |

【推荐3】It was a cloudy Monday in late October 2012 when Hurricane Sandy approached Long Island. I was confident that Sandy would pass through, leaving us undamaged because of our experience with Hurricane Irene last year.
Some of my neighbors chose to leave, but my husband and I decided to stay. My husband moved my car to higher ground and left his in the driveway. We pulled out our candles and flashlights and felt prepared for Hurricane Sandy.
The sky had become very dark. The heavy winds and rains had moved in. Power lines moved from side to side rapidly and water rose quickly in my front yard. My husband put pumps in the garage to fight against the water. I watched in disbelief and helplessness as I realized that even the most powerful pump could not manage it.
My husband went to turn off the main power of the house to prevent a fire and move his car to higher ground. The time that he was gone felt like an eternity and I was afraid to be alone. When I opened the door, my husband was standing there and informed me that the water was too deep for us to try to go through We had to stay and wait out the storm.
When the water reached the third step of our high ranch home, we decided that we would climb to the roof if the water continued to rise.
