The New Year comes with Northeast China's coldest days, but it's also, the peak season for winter tourism.
Harbin
A major draw for Harbin, known as “Ice City”, is its more than 400 activities started from early November to early April. They cover tourism, culture, art, fashion, sports and trade. The 22nd Harbin Ice, and Snow World, a 600,000-squaré-mcter: wonderland of sculptures, opened on Dec 24 and will run until the end of February. Another important event in the city — the 33rd China Harbin Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo — kicked off on Dec 20. At the expo, tourists can view 50 groups of snow sculptures, which use more than 90,000 cubic meters of snow, including the 116-meler-long main snow sculpture The, Chinese Dragon.
Mohe
Mohe, China's northernmost city, is also presenting its unique winter charms to tourists. As the coldest place in China, winter tourism season begins in mid-October and lasts until late January. Beiji Village, 88 kilometers from the city center, attracts almost all the' visitors who land at Mohe. In the village, a recently built hotel made of ice and snow has become a popular attraction. Almost everything inside is made of frozen water in some forms, including the beds, tables, sofas and decorations.
Jilin
During this winter tourism season, which started in mid-November until April, nearly 300 snow and ice themed activities will be held across Jilin. The fifth Jilin International Ice and Snow Industry Expo promoted a combination of Winter Olympics themes, winter culture, ice and snow tourism and winter sports. On the frozen Chagan Lake, an impressive winter fishing lasts ritual(仪式)that dates from the Jin Dynasty also takes place. The activity of winter fishing lasts two months. Cork
Cork is the largest county in Ireland. Located at the southwestern end of the country, this city of more than 200, 000 residents is famous for being home to the Blarney Stone. According to local legend, the stone will give you the gift of eloquence(流利的口才), if you dare kiss it.
Killarney
For the Irish countryside experience, travel to Killarney. The town is surrounded by evergreen hills and valley on all sides, affording plenty of opportunities to become one with nature. Visitors are attracted by Killarney National Park, which features Ireland’s highest mountain range, MacGillycuddy’s Reeks.
Dublin
If you only have time to visit one place in Ireland, go to Dublin. Not only is Dublin the country’s center for politics, culture and music, but it also offers easy access to Blarney Castle, one of Ireland’s top points of interest. While here, do as the Irish do and taste some beer either at the popular Guinness Storehouse or at the Temple Bar.
Killarney
Kilkenny offers a hearty amount of historical attractions for travelers to explore. This is largely thanks to the town’s prior distinction of being the medieval capital of Ireland, which today lives on in the Medieval Mile, Kilkenny’s top attraction. Within the Medieval Mile you’ll find several interesting sights, such as Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice’s Cathedral and the Medieval Mile Museum.

They are very different but equally loved.
Webb is expected to detect light from the universe’s first stars, beyond Hubble’s range. This light will show how the original stars looked 13.7 billion years ago. Hubble has stared as far back as 13.4 billion years, discovering the oldest and farthest object ever observed. Astronomers are eager to close the 300 million year gap with Webb and draw ever closer in time to the Big Bang, the moment the universe formed 13.8 billion years ago. “It’s like looking at the picture book of our kids and missing the first two years. We are trying to figure out where they come from,” explained NASA’s chief scientist Thomas Zurbuchen.
Hubble sees what we see, with a little ultraviolet and infrared thrown in. Webb has infrared vision. That’s why Webb needs to run at -240℃. To stay cold, Webb carries a five-layer shelter to keep it from sunlight. Between each layer of the shelter, whose size is as big as a tennis court, there is a gap so heat can escape out the sides.
To detect the universe’s first and darkening stars, Webb requires the largest mirror ever made for astronomy. The mirror spans more than 6.5 meters, yet is lighter than Hubble’s, which is 2.4 meters across. The mirror consists of 18 smaller pieces, each of which is the size of a coffee table and coated with very thin gold, an ideal reflector of infrared light.
Hubble circles 530 kilometers above the earth. Webb is 1.6 million kilometers away at what’s called the second Lagrange point (L2). This is where the gravitational forces of the earth and the sun balance, requiring minimal fuel for a spacecraft to stay there. Webb will constantly face the night side of Earth as the spacecraft and planet run around the sun in unison (同步).
1. What does Thomas Zurbuchen mean?A.Webb will help scientists see the Big Bang. | B.He wants to find some of his kids’ pictures. |
C.New space telescopes are better than old ones. | D.Webb might detect the light of the first stars. |

The four-legged robot took only an hour to learn how to walk steadily, roughly the same amount of time as newborn horses need. And it’s the first time that a machine learning technique has been so successfully applied to four-legged robots.
Morti is controlled by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (算法) that doesn’t have much information about the robot’s legs, such as the exact shape of each element. “The AI, working like the central nervous system, gives walking instructions for Morti to follow. It then adjusts (调整) them based on readings from foot sensors that signal when the robot falls and loses contact with the ground. Initially (最初), Morti falls down, but after about an hour the AI finds the best way to make it walk,” said Ruppert.
Because the AI learns rather than computing details of each leg’s movement in advance, which can use a lot of energy, Morti walks using 42 percent less energy than when it first starts at the end of an hour-long learning process. Morti’s process copies the way baby animals learn to move, as they also find the most efficient way to use their muscles by trying and initially tripping.
Dhireesha Kudithipudi at The University of Texas at San Antonio said that AI robots can often learn a specific task very well but can’t readjust when the environment changes and that Morti’s design, which relies on continually adjusting the robot’s movements, may perform better in that regard. Ruppert said he and the team are working on adding more sensors and range of motion to Morti to make it a more animal-like robot.
1. What is special about Morti?A.It is pre-programmed to walk. | B.It can help teach the newborns. |
C.It is the first four-legged robot. | D.It can learn to walk by itself. |

The views of the Crimean coast from the top of 1,234-metre high Ai-Petri Mount are amazing. The hanging bridges built in recent years can reach the top of the mount. If just walking across the bridges is not dangerous enough, it also happens to be one of the windiest places in the world. It is said that the bridges blow from side to side as wind speeds reach 170 kilometres per hour for 125 days of the year. It’s also very foggy, so you may not be able to see clearly!
U Bein Bridge, Myanmar
This five-metre-high, 1.2-kilometre wooden footbridge does not look as dangerous as the others, but do not be fooled. It was built in the 1850s and it’s certainly feeling its age! Some of the old wood is not as strong as it used to be. It is easy to lose your footing. Although there is no handrail (栏杆), large numbers of tourists cross it every day. When the tourists arrive in the evening to watch the beautiful sunset, this bridge could become the most dangerous of them all!
The Trift Bridge, Switzerland
At 100 metres high and 170 metres long, this is one of the highest bridges in the world. Built in 2004, the bridge is hidden among the high Swiss Alps. You wouldn’t have wanted to walk across the bridge before its repair in 2009. But if you have the courage to cross this bridge, you’d better do it quickly!
The Hussaini Hanging Bridge, Pakistan
In the mountainous area of Northern Pakistan, the Hussaini Hanging Bridge helps travelers cross the Borit Lake. However, you will not feel too confident when you get close to this bridge. It’s one of the oldest bridges in Pakistan and many locals use it every day to travel to work and school — imagine losing your homework over the side of this bridge! Today, space efforts cost about $200 billion a year. Joint efforts between governments and businesses are helping to lower costs and increase our understanding of the universe.
The business of space looks good for Orbital ATK, a company based in the United States. In January, the company launched its Antares rocket. The rocket was carrying the first of eight planned supply shipments to the International Space Station. Orbital ATK is one of the two American companies paid by NASA to transport supplies to the space station.
A company called Arianespace is a private European space business. Clayton Nowry heads the American division of the company. He says the increase in rocket launches is partly the result of increased demand for space-based technologies. These include high-definition (高清的) broadcasts and satellite broadband services.
While there is more demand for satellites, the end of NASA's Space Shuttle program in 2011 has hurt the space industry. Janice Starzyk works at International Launch Services. She works on education issues at the Washington Space Business Roundtable. She said, "It's a pity that the program's shutdown was a huge, huge set of lay-offs (下岗人员) in the industry."
But even as NASA reduces its spending, other countries have announced plans to explore space. In December 2013, China became just the third country to land an unmanned space vehicle on the moon. A month later, India sent its first communications satellite.
