The world of fashion and beauty is rarely related to disabilities, and even though Hollywood has made steps toward greater inclusion and clothing brand Aerie has featured women with disabilities in their advertisements, seeing disabilities in the mainstream is definitely unusual. The reason why these things make headlines is that they’re so rare.
I learned from a very young age that because of my disability, I would never be connected with beauty or charm. I’d spent so long feeling separated from so many parts of society, but Ulta is sending a powerful message with a single photo: It’s time to challenge conventional beauty standards because beauty comes in all forms.
We all want to feel included. When it comes to disabilities, it is so important, especially for children and teens with disabilities. I was well into my 30s when I rolled into a makeup store for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing and felt like entering a new world without a map; I felt like I was out of place, as if I was peeking (偷看;窥视) at a club without being invited. Imagine how my experience would have been different if I had seen a model in a wheelchair, smiling, as if to say, “Welcome. Yes, you belong!”
That message of inclusion was loud and clear for Maren Anderson, a 4-year-old girl who has a rare genetic disease and just started using a wheelchair. The moment she spotted the advertisement was caught on camera by her mom Carolyn Anderson, and quickly spread last month on Facebook. “It’s just really saying that she feels included, and she feels like she identifies with that, and belongs here just like everybody else. So, thank you, Ulta,” said Carolyn Anderson.
1. What can be learned from paragraph 2?A.There will be more products for the disabled. |

C.It helps make the disabled feel confident and involved. |
D.It breaks the barrier between the disabled and the able-bodied. |
A.Nervous and embarrassed. | B.Sad and guilty. |
C.Excited and proud. | D.Bored and disappointed. |
A.To expose the condition of the disabled. |
B.To show the effect of Ulta’s advertisement. |
C.To emphasize the sense of belonging. |
D.To explore the contemporary beauty standards. |

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it. Residents (居民) of cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason the Mediterranean has always attracted them. Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean resorts and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!
The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italy’s 30,000 hotels are booked solid ( 全部客满) every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks, and roadsides. Spain’s long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit yearly, or one tourist for every person living in Spain.
But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism, it’s getting worse. The French can’t figure out what to do with all the garbage left by campers around St. Tropez. And in many places, swimming is dangerous because of pollution.
None of this, however, is spoiling anyone’s fun. The Mediterranean gets more popular every year with tourists. Obviously, they don’t go there for clean water and solitude (清净自在). They tolerate traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don’t even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it’s still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.

The robot, named Fabio, was part of an experiment conducted by the Heriot-Watt University, which explores the combination of men and machines. Elena Margiotta, co-owner of the Margiotta supermarket chain, says, “We thought a robot was a great addition that could show the customers that we are always wanting to do something new and exciting.”
Fabio’s job was to make customers feel welcome and assist them in locating grocery items if asked. Things seemed to start off well. The almost 4-foot-tall humanoid robot greeted customers, talked intelligently about the weather, and even gave hugs and high-fives. Later, its friendliness appeared to wane when a shopper needed help but received a vague answer. Therefore, store visitors began to seek out human employees for help.
Believing it might be better at a job that required more socializing, the shop assigned Fabio to hand out sausage samples. Unfortunately, things did not go well. While a human employee managed to attract 12 customers to try the food in 15 minutes, the robot attracted just two.
Since Fabio was not trained for any other job, the grocery store management decided to “fire” the robot a week after it had first reported for duty. The director of the Interaction Lab at Heriot-Watt says, “When we had to put it back in the box, one of employees started crying because they had become emotionally attached to it. It was good in a way because we had thought they would feel threatened by it as it was competing for their job. ” As he later discovered, the tears were not out of fondness for Fabio, but it was because the robot freed the human employees from the dull task of responding to customers’ questions.
Although Fabio appears to be different within its family, thousands of other quite similar Pepper humanoid robots employed at various Japanese stores and some stores in America seem to be extremely popular with customers.

Just as she began to take a deep breath to calm her anxiety, an exam booklet(册子) was placed in front of her. This was the moment she had been expecting ever since she began law school three years ago. She picked up her pencil, and opened to the first page of the bar exam, a test for all students wanting to become licensed lawyers.
Liana never thought she would want to become a lawyer. Her parents were both artists. Law was something she had not been exposed to as a child. But art made for a tumultuous career—both of her parents had struggled to find jobs and worked round the clock when they were young. Even though they finally seemed successful and happy, Liana wanted something different.
She was the anchor on her high school debate team, and consistently impressed her competitors with her analytical thinking. “Never argue with Ms. Lakes,” her teachers would say. So she chose to major in law. In her mind, she pictured herself in a New York City courtroom(法庭) dressed in an expensive suit, with papers in her hand, waving at the jury(陪审团) in a speech on human rights.
But now, with the bar exam sitting in front of her, she started to worry. “What if I don’t pass? Did I study enough?” Her thoughts raced through her mind. On the first page were seven paragraphs detailing a law situation followed by a series of questions. Liana read through the paragraphs, and quickly scribbled down an explanation of the first question before moving onto the next question. The next few hours went like this as the clock ticked closer and closer to the lunch hour.
At 12:00 p.m. sharp, a buzzer(蜂鸣器) sounded and everyone was told to put down their pencils and walked out for an hour-long lunch break. At lunch, Liana met her friend, Kevin.
“How did it go?” she asked. “To be honest, I’ve no idea. I just kept writing.” Kevin said. Liana laughed and said she felt the same way.
After lunch, the two exchanged words of encouragement. They strolled back into the exam center a bit more refreshed. Liana finished the second half of the exam that day with a better feeling than what she started with in the morning.
1. What do we know about the bar exam Liana is taking?A.It is for someone to be a qualified lawyer. |

【推荐3】If a diver surfaces too quickly, he may suffer the bends. Nitrogen(氮) dissolved(溶解) in his blood is suddenly liberated by the reduction of pressure. The consequence, if the bubbles (气泡)accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent body—thus the name. If the bubbles form in his lungs or his brain, the consequence can be death.
Other air-breathing animals also suffer this decompression(减压) sickness if they surface too fast: whales, for example. And so, long ago, did ichthyosaurs. That these ancient sea animals got the bends can be seen from their bones. If bubbles of nitrogen form inside the bone they can cut off its blood supply. This kills the cells in the bone, and consequently weakens it, sometimes to the point of collapse. Fossil (化石)bones that have caved in on them selves are thus a sign that the animal once had the bends.
Bruce Rothschild of the University of Kansas knew all this when he began a study of ichthyosaur bones to find out how widespread the problem was in the past. What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of decompression over the 150 million years. To this end, he and his colleagues traveled the world’s natural-history museums, looking at hundreds of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic period and from the later Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
When he started, he assumed that signs of the bends would be rarer in younger fossils, reflecting their gradual evolution of measures to deal with decompression. Instead, he was astonished to discover the opposite. More than 15% of Jurassic and Cretaceous ichthyosaurs had suffered the bends before they died, but not a single Triassic specimen(标本) showed evidence of that sort of injury.
If ichthyosaurs did evolve an anti-decompression means, they clearly did so quickly—and, most strangely, they lost it afterwards. But that is not what Dr Rothschild thinks happened. He suspects it was evolution in other animals that caused the change.
Whales that suffer the bends often do so because they have surfaced to escape a predator (捕食动物) such as a large shark. One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, both of which were fond of ichthyosaur lunches. Triassic oceans, by contrast, were mercifully shark- and crocodile-free. In the Triassic, then, ichthyosaurs were top of the food chain. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, they were prey(猎物) as well as predator—and often had to make a speedy exit as a result.
1. Which of the following is a typical symptom of the bends?A.A twisted body. | B.A gradual decrease in blood supply. |
C.A sudden release of nitrogen in blood. | D.A drop in blood pressure. |
A.how often ichthyosaurs caught the bends | B.how ichthyosaurs adapted to decompression |
C.why ichthyosaurs bent their bodies | D.when ichthyosaurs broke their bones |
A.confirmed his assumption | B.speeded up his research process |
C.disagreed with his assumption | D.changed his research objectives |
A.failed to evolve an anti decompression means |
B.gradually developed measures against the bends |
C.died out because of large sharks and crocodiles |
D.evolved an anti decompression means but soon lost it |
