Perhaps the most important element involved in becoming an outstanding athlete is genetic. Most Olympic competitors are equipped with certain physical characteristics that make them different from the average person. Olympic weightlifters, for example, have a large number of fast- twitch fibers (快速收缩肌肉纤维) in their muscles. These allow them to lift hundreds of kilos from the ground and over their heads in seconds. Surprisingly, a large, muscular body is not the main requirement to do well in this sport. It is more important to have a large number of fast-twitch fibers in the muscles.
The legs of an outstanding marathon runner, on the other hand, might contain up to 90 percent slow-twitch muscle fibers. When we exercise long or hard, it’s common to experience tiredness, muscle pain, and difficulty breathing. These feelings are caused when the muscles produce high amounts of a substance called lactate and can’t remove it quickly enough. Athletes with many slow-twitch muscle fibers seem to be able to clear the lactate from their muscles faster as they move.
Some athletes’ abilities are naturally enhanced by their environment. Those raised at high altitudes (海拔高地) in countries such as Kenya have blood rich in hemoglobin (血红素). Large amounts of hemoglobin carry oxygen around the body faster, enabling these athletes to run better. Although genes, environment, and even culture play a part in becoming an outstanding athlete, training and practice are needed to succeed. Marathon runners may be able to control tiredness and keep moving for long periods of time, but they must train to reach their goals. Weightlifters and gymnasts perfect their skills by repeating the same motions again and again until they become automatic. Greg Louganis, winner of four Olympic diving gold medals, says divers must train the same way to be successful: “You have less than three seconds from takeoff until you hit the water, so it has to be reflex (对刺激的本能反应). You have to repeat the dives hundreds, maybe thousands, of times.” Training this way requires an athlete to be not only physically fit but psychologically healthy as well. Otherwise, they couldn’t handle the training loads.

Get ready for the spectacular sporting event with our fact-packed tournament guide. On 20 November, the FIFA World Cup tournament kicks off in Qatar. Around five billion football fans around the world are expected to watch live on TV as the best men’s teams battle it out for football’s ultimate prize.
Who are some of the star players to watch?
From Son Hueng-min to Gareth Bale, there will be more top talent on show than ever in this tournament. It’s the first time teams can take a squad of 26 players, rather than the usual 23. Sadly, it may be the last World Cup for two of the greatest players in the game: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s a chance for some fresh talent to shine, however: look out for younger players such as England’s Jude Bellingham, Germany’s Jamal Musiala and Pedri for Spain.
Which teams will be at the World Cup?
Thirty-two teams will compete for the trophy (奖杯). For the first time ever, Qatar will take part in the tournament. As hosts, they qualified automatically but the other 31 teams had to win a number of qualifying matches. The next World Cup in 2026 will be even bigger — forty-eight teams will be in competition.
Which teams are the favourites to win?
France is the current champion and one of the favourites to win again with a star-studded squad featuring strikers Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema. Other European teams hoping to do well include England, Germany, Portugal and Spain. Argentina, Brazil and Senegal are some of the strongest nations outside Europe. Wales is playing in its first World Cup since 1958, but Scotland and Northern Ireland did not qualify.
How does the tournament work?
The 32 teams have been drawn into eight groups of four. The teams in each group play each other once in a mini-league, and the top two from each group progress to the knockout stage. Teams must win that game, then a quarter-final and a semi-final to reach the final on 18 December. As well as the World Cup trophy for the winning team, there are individual trophies for the best player (Golden Ball) and top scorer (Golden Boot). England’s Captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot in 2018.
What conditions will players face in this World Cup?
Since the first men’s World Cup in 1930, the tournament has been played in June and July. However, Qatar is so hot in the summer that the 2022 competition was moved to November and December, when it’s cooler. It’s still warm, though, and each of the eight stadiums has air-conditioning. It will take the equivalent of 100 bathtubs of water a day just to keep the pitches in the stadiums green.
As well as a brand-new city and airport, seven spectacular new stadiums were built for this World Cup. Look out for the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, which glows different colours at night; the Al Janoub Stadium, which is designed to look like the sails of a traditional Qatari boat; and a stadium built from 974 recycled shipping containers.
1. Who is likely not to attend the next World Cup in 2026?A.Lionel Messi | B.Gareth Bale | C.Son Hueng-min | D.Karim Benzema |
A.Senegal is one of the strongest nations outside Europe. |
B.Qatar had to win a number of qualifying matches to be qualified. |
C.Golden Boot will be awarded to the best player. |

However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata (奏鸣曲) by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.
Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.
Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised, “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. A bout two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me — I hear the notes and can bear them in mind — each and every note,” says Samuel.
Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently, “It’s all about super memory — I guess I have that gift.”
However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn't stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

Churchill, Manitoba
Set on the shores of Hudson Bay, this subarctic(靠近北极的)town has earned international fame as the polar bear capital of the world. So plentiful are the bears that the town actually has a “polar bear prison,” which holds bears that are resistant to people's instruction and wander into town until they can be released back into the wild. Encountering a polar bear in the wild is no doubt an unforgettable experience.
Banff and Lake Louise, Alberta
Set inside the borders of the vast Banff National Park, Banff and Lake Louise is one of the best places to visit in Canada. Here you'll find a Rocky Mountain wonderland; a place of electric blue glacial lakes, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife (from elk to bighorn sheep). Stay either in Banff, the busy center of the area and home to classic hotels like the Fairmont Banff Springs (one of Canada's greatest hotels), or hike trails up into the mountains—and unparalleled(无与伦比的)silence-are just steps away.
Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick
Recently shortlisted in a massive international competition to name a new seven wonders of the natural world, the tides on this big bay, make it truly one of the best places to visit in Canada. The most extreme tides on earth, they rise and fall more than 50 feet in some places. These can be seen most dramatically at a place like Hopewell Rocks, unique stone formations that, at low tide, form towers on dry land but become islands as the water rises.
Quebec City
The oldest walled city in North America, Quebec City holds both British charm and culture alongside its unmistakable French-Canadian character. It also bears the distinction of being the place where, as every good Canadian history student knows, Wolfe defeated Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham, securing Canada for the British Empire.

Behind me there was a family going up the same way and they also noticed the tarantula. Without doubting it, a kid shouted, ''Quick, Dad, kill it. '' His brother also encouraged their dad to do that.
Then I stopped their dad. ''Wait. This is the last place the tarantula has to live in. Do you really want to kill it? ''
''Well, it's dangerous and we have kids here…''
''Why not stand still and let it cross safely? Then you can go and admire the rest of the park. ''
After some discussions I persuaded them to stand still and watch. Soon, the tarantula crossed and hid into the bushes.
