Salar de Uyuni was part of an ancient salt lake, Lago Minchin, which once covered most of southwest Bolivia, a country in South America. When the lake dried up, it left two seasonal lakes and several salt deserts, including Salar de Uyuni.

From a distance, the salt desert seems like something out of a science-fiction film. During the dry seasons, it looks like a white sea, which stretches on to the horizon (天际). When there is rain, something magical happens: The salt desert becomes a “mirror of the sky”.

Most people may not be familiar with the “mirror of the sky”, but astronauts are. They frequently use it to test remote sensing systems on satellites in orbit, because it is pretty large by anyone’s standards—twelve thousand square kilometers—and it has an unbelievably smooth surface which is highly reflective when it is covered in water, making it perfect for that task.

There are three different types of flamingos (火烈鸟) living in the area. They are one of the few large animals that live happily in these areas. During the rainy seasons, you will see groups of them on your visit and the sight of them flying in the air is breathtaking.

Where to stay, though? You would regret not to take advantage of the local hotels like Hotel Del Sal, which are completely made of salt. You can even picnic if you want. Of course, be prepared for your picnic table to be made of salt, too.

【推荐2】For most people, a minor wound will be relatively harmless. After some time the wound will heal (治愈) and disappear without leaving any visible evidence on the skin. But it is not so simple for everybody. Diabetics (糖尿病人) and elderly people with reduced blood circulation may have far greater issues when it comes to wound healing. However, scientists have introduced a new weapon against such extreme wound reactions.

Swedish scientists from Chalmers University of Technology have developed a technology which can stimulate wound healing so that it can happen more rapidly. The technique involves electrifying the skin. “Long-standing wounds make up a severe problem that we do not hear very much about,” says Associate Professor Maria Asplund from Chalmers University of Technology, who headed the project. “We have now found a method that can make wounds heal up to three times faster, which could be a game changer for elderly people and diabetics, who often have wounds that cannot heal.”

To test this, the Chalmers researchers made a kind of biochip (生物芯片) on which they grew skin cells. They then made small wounds in the artificial skin and tested how fast the wound healing happened when they either passed electricity through the chip or did not. The results showed the healing process happening three times faster in the presence of electricity.

The scientists will now receive funds to continue their research beyond the lab. “At the moment we are investigating how different skin cells react to electrical stimulation to find out what would correspond to realistic wounds,” says Asplund. “We aim to develop a concept that allows us to examine wounds and personalize the electrical stimulation to individual wound types. We are convinced that this is the way to help people with slow-healing wounds.”

The first thing that caught my eye was the architecture. I was astonished, though I am a beat-up traveler. The reason for my surprise is that Lviv’s houses breathe with history. While walking in the streets, you will repeatedly catch yourself imagining getting into the 17th century somehow.     2     I got one of my first bright impressions about Lviv almost immediately after my arrival, walking around the city center early in the morning, searching for a hostel to check into.

    3     They are the number of themed cafes and restaurants, and extremely polite and friendly people. As for the cafes, they can be safely considered a hallmark of the city; looking back, I can tell you that you can hardly find two cafes in Lviv that would be at least remotely similar to each other.

People in Lviv are friendly.     4     The people I was talking to knew English quite well-knowledgeable enough to explain to me where I could go and what to see. Even individuals who didn’t speak a word in English still tried to give me a hand, using gestures and laughter, which was funny both for me and for them.     5     So maybe this was the reason for the people’s uplifted mood.

Belgrade Fortress (Belgrade)

Drwengrad (Uzice)

Famous director Emir Kusturica has built the beautiful village “Drwengrad” (wooden town) in 2004. Drwengrad is not on any map. You can get here by a retro train, which appeared in the director’s film Life as a Miracle. Here Kusturica receives tourist, holds festivals and loudly declares his views. Walking along the wooden bridge, you can meet colorful Serbian grandmothers, offering tourists products made of sheep’s wool.

Fruska Gora National Park (Novi Sad)

Fruska Gora has acquired the status of a national park because of the huge number of rare trees and shrubs.
