How to Interact with the Blind

Interacting with a blind person may be a little discouraging at first. But with an open mind, you will realize that blind people are just like you and everyone else!

Treat blind people as just another person. Many people assume that blind people have other medical problems. This may be so but is not always the case.     1    . Additionally, Blind does not mean that they cannot do anything, nor does it mean that they have lower-than-average common sense. It is only a physical challenge.

Bear in mind that blind people treat guide dogs as extensions of their bodies. Never distract(使分心)guide dogs from their job without permission.     2    . Once distracted, they may fail to prevent a blind person from danger.

3    . When having a conversation in a group, remember to identify the person you are speaking to, i.e. using his or her name—otherwise, the blind person will be confused as to whether or not you are speaking to them. When leaving, always inform the blind person so that they will not be left talking to the air.

If you offer assistance, just let them know.     4    ; however, make sure they are aware that you are going to help them. Do not clap, repeat or push when guiding a blind person. This would be somewhat rude.

Relax.     5    . Just as a person who uses a wheelchair still goes for a walk, a blind person will still be pleased to "see" you. In other words, blind people use the same expressions as those who are sighted.

A.Many blind people will accept help
B.Be considerate in conversation with the blind
C.Don't talk to the guide dog instead of the blind person
D.Some words such as "handicapped" are seen as not politically correct
E.Guide dogs are not super animals, and they can be distracted by whistling or food
F.Unless you know for sure, assume blindness is the only medical condition this person has
G.Don't be embarrassed if you use common expressions such as "See you later" or "Did you watch the movie?"

【推荐1】How to protect your ears

You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard.     1     So no harm done…right?

Not quite. Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious--- and irreversible(无法治愈的)--- hearing loss. A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss.     2    But the good news is that there plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage — and still listen to the music you love:

Ask around. Put your earbuds in or your headphones on, and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what you’re listening to.     3    Turn it down.

Buy noise-canceling headphones. A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volumes.

Take breaks.       4     So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.

5    You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts — or while playing or practicing your own music — without changing the quality of the sound.

A.Use earplugs.
B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.
C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.
D.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.
E.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.
F.Unfortunately, there’s no way to get back hearing you’ve already lost.
G.The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.

【推荐2】Nowadays with the development of the economy, our life is becoming easier and easier in many ways. We can drive a car to travel to and from work. We can save a lot of time, shopping online instead of going to stores. Besides, the elevator is widely used in our daily life.     1     The elevator safety troubles us from time to time. Here are several ways for you to help you use the elevator safely.

    2

Before stepping on the elevator, you should check your and your children's clothing for the loose parts, such as shoelaces(鞋带)and gloves, which can be trapped in the moving parts.

Mind your position.

3     Tell your children not to lean on the handrail(扶手), which can slow down the elevator and may make other people lose their balance. You should stand on the right instead of on the left, which is convenient for some people who are anxious to go downwards or upwards.

Locate the emergency stop button.

4     The button may be near the bottom, but sometimes alongside the stairs. If the elevator breaks down, it is helpful for you to stop the elevator.    5

A.Watch your step.
B.Check your clothing.
C.However, every coin has two sides.
D.This will also avoid many accidents.
E.How to use the elevator safely is troubling us.
F.Teach your children to face forward and stand still on the elevator.

【推荐3】So let’s say that you’re sitting at a restaurant and when your food arrives, you take one bite and decide that something is preventing you from taking a second bite. No matter what the reason is, this dish is going back to the kitchen, and now it’s up to you to find a way to send it back politely.

First of all, the single most important thing to do when you’re sending something back is to do it immediately. If you eat half the dish before sending it back, the server and kitchen will believe that you really don’t need to send it back.

If a dish is too salty that it cannot be eaten, you should first let the server know what the situation is, and they’ll take it back to the kitchen and bring you a new one. Remember that it is not the server’s fault, so don’t take it out on them. Also, don’t be afraid that they’ll get angry at you, or someone will spit (吐) in your food. It’s their job to make sure that you’re satisfied, and if the kitchen clearly makes a mistake the server will be frustrated with the kitchen, not with the diner who has been served an inedible meal. A new dish will be cooked, and nobody’s going to spit in it.

There is, however, one example when you are sending back a dish which will really annoy both the server and the kitchen. If you order a pasta dish that contains pancetta but then send it back to the kitchen because you’re a vegetarian (素食者) and don’t know what pancetta is, and then congratulations because you’re one of the most unbearable types of customers a restaurant can have. A perfectly good plate of food is just thrown out because you don’t ask what pancetta is before ordering.

So the bottom line: Use common sense if you think that you need to send your dish back. If the kitchen do something wrong, then they’re on the hook for a new plate of food. If you do something wrong, then hopefully you’ve learned a lesson.

1. When the diners find something wrong with the dishes they ordered, they should __________ .
A.send them back immediatelyB.eat half the dishes before sending them back
C.go back to the kitchen themselvesD.wait until the cook apologizes to them
2. The underlined word “inedible” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “ __________”.
A.unbearableB.unpleasant
C.tastelessD.uneatable
3. What will happen when you are sending back a dish owing to your own mistake?
A.You’ll be fined by the restaurant.
B.Your request will be refused immediately.
C.You’ll be forced to leave the restaurant.
D.Your food will be thrown out of the restaurant.
4. The passage is intended to __________.
A.guide diners how to enjoy a good meal in a restaurant
B.introduce the best way to send back food in a restaurant
C.introduce the bottom line people should have in a restaurant
D.inform the diners of the most important things to do in a restaurant
