When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a brown-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.

The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no identification marks. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.

By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found part in the local newspaper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood. They sounded anxious. My hands shook.

Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the dog Molly. It followed the girls everywhere they went. But there was one problem bothering me: my conscience (良心). I knew in my heart I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Molly was the dog they were eagerly looking for. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.

Today was the finals of the Dance Competition. Our team of five had me as the lead dancer; then there was Grace, my best friend and Eric, a dance lover who is a master in perfecting our choreography (编舞); and two talented twins, with such flexibility and grace on the stage that one cannot take their eyes off them.

We had found a perfect coach for our team. Jackie, a cousin of Eric’s, worked in a dance school. She was a bit hesitant at first, but quickly agreed when she saw the progress we had made so far.

In the dressing rooms, there were so many other competitors preparing for their performance, rushing here and there.

Grace and I had changed into our costumes and were putting on our shoes when Eric murmured, “Who are they?”

We turned to follow his stare, among many people, four beautiful girls along with a lean boy had just walked in.

“They’re first-rate!” cried Grace, “more like fashion models.”

They sure were. A look at the list of competitors told me they were from “Tweekverse”, the most famous dance school in the whole country.

Jackie came up behind us, “Guys, it’s time, come on. Let’s go!”

“Oooh, do you get the vibe (氛围)?” Grace was excited. I could understand her, I didn’t feel any less thrilled.

When we entered the concert hall, my jaw literally just dropped. It was massive. There were so many people. The four judges, who were seated at a large panel, did look very serious.

The competition started. The first performances were brilliant. One team had the neon (霓虹) theme, in which they wore shine-in-the-dark costumes and the whole place was dark. I was attracted to their impressive display. Obviously, everybody was. The judges’ cards displayed the scores. They were marking out of ten.

The next performances were even better, but for us, they became more competitive. The group from Tweekverse was the best. Their costumes, charming faces and fascinating performance impressed everyone.

Every time Jim crossed the street on his way to work, he would see a little girl selling flowers on the street. She sat by a large green board with the names of the flowers and their prices on it. Unfortunately, no one paid attention to her, and she rarely sold anything. Jim wanted to help her, and one day he got his chance. His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.

“Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses?” Jim said as he approached the girl.

The girl didn’t raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. “I’m Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me,” she said. “Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me? I will tie them together for you. I can’t see. ”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.

“Here,” she said, holding the bouquet. “That’ll be $5.”

“Thanks. They’re beautiful,” Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.

The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn’t see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn’t show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).

Jim was concerned about Cassy, wondering if something bad had happened to Cassy. Surprisingly, he finally met Cassy again on the street with her flowers.

Tom and his friend were walking to work. They were talking about the big football match.

“Are you going to see the match?” Tom’s friend asked him.

“No, I must go to work.” Tom said.

Tom worked in the office of Mr. Bates. When Tom got to the office a letter was waiting for him. He opened it.

“Dear Tom.” the letter began. “I’m writing to thank you for all your help. I’m sending a ticket for the big match. I cannot go to the match because I am ill. I shall see it on TV. You can go to the match with my ticket.”

Tom looked at the ticket. He could not believe that he had it. A ticket for the big match!

He looked at the ticket again. “I must go to the match.” he thought. “I must. But how can I go? How can I get out of the office? I can’t tell Mr. Bates that I’m ill. He will know what I’m doing. He’ll know I’m trying to get out of the office and go to the big match.”

Tom thought and thought. He could not do any work. Then, at twelve o'clock, he knew what to do. He stood up and walked to a telephone at the end of the street. He spoke to his sister, Jean. “Jean, this is Tom,” he said. “I want you to make a telephone call to my office. Ask to speak to Mr. Bates. Tell him you are speaking from a doctor’s office. Tell him that my mother is ill.”

He put down the telephone and went back to the office. At one o'clock, Mr. Bates came up to him.

“I have had bad news for you, Tom,” he said. “Your mother is ill. The doctor telephoned. You must go to her.”

“Thank you.” Tom said. “I’ll go now. I’ll come back as soon as I can.” He left the office quickly for the football ground. The big match did not start until three but the ground was nearly full. But Tom’s ticket was a good one. He could stand near the front. The football match was very good. Many people saw the match on TV. People at home could see everything in the football ground. And there was a TV on the office wall.
