A golden haze settled over the cornfields. The sun prepared to rest for the evening, and I intended to follow. Saying goodbye to the clan (宗族) I was staying with, I headed back to camp. I looked forward to setting my camera aside for an evening to reflect on my time in Ethiopia.

It wasn’t long when I heard a voice behind me, “Photo, photo, photo.” A young Surma boy about eight years old followed closely at my heels. I breathed a tired sigh. I had no energy to press the shutter button one more time, no matter how beautiful or eager he was.

Over the past four days, many in the camp had wanted their photograph taken. I hoped the boy would find someone else to snap his photograph, but he kept following me and saying, “Photo, photo, photo.” He managed to catch my eye. With eyes wide full of hope, he asked me again with anticipation on his face.

As I looked at him, half interested, an idea for a composition flashed in my mind.

I kneeled in the cornfield and instructed the boy where to stand and how to pose. As I prepared to take the photograph, his energy suddenly shifted from eagerness to shyness to fear.

No matter what I told him to do—how to stand and how to look—I just couldn’t get the shot. Frustrated, I gave up. I looked at the boy, who looked alone and awkward. He’d wanted his photograph taken, and now he’d gone camera-shy.

In an effort to cheer him, I clapped my hands, saying, “That was great. You were great.” Others in his clan gathered around, cheering and clapping loudly. The boy’s face immediately broke into a smile. I intuitively (凭直觉地) took a few shots of the moment. That photograph turned out to be better than I’d imagined.

【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Little Ashley had just gotten home from the annual fair with her dad and her grandma. Dad and Grandma were sitting in the yard, chatting happily. And Ashley had her helium(氦气)—filled balloon that she had gotten from the fair, running around. It didn’t cost much but they were on a tight budget. They should have spent the money on daily necessities. But the eagerness in Ashley’s eyes reminded Dad of the moment some forty years ago. It was in that same fair market that Dad got his desired toy from Grandma. Ashley’s innocence melted his heart. “Nothing can ever take the place of real love and family togetherness,” Grandma always said so.

The wind blew, and the beautiful balloon seemed like it was trying to escape. It was almost like trying to hold on to a horse that was bent on speeding away. Her dad warned her, “Never let go or else you’ll probably never see it again.” She listened well and held on tight. She kept her balloon until the helium all came out of it, and it slowly floated to the ground.

A couple of months passed, and unfortunately Grandma got sick. She went into the hospital. Ashley kept asking her dad about going to see her. But Dad was always too busy. He’d say, “We’ll go see Grandma next week. I’ve got so much important work that just can’t wait.”

That next week just seemed to keep getting farther and farther away. Ashley kept annoying her dad about it. After a day of the usual bothering about visiting Grandma, Dad finally said impatiently, “All right young lady, you listen here, I want you to stop bothering me about this. We’ll go see your grandma very soon, and she’ll be just fine until then. This work I have to do is very important. I must finish it!”

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Ryan picked up a snowball and began to polish it so that soon it was hard as a cricket ball. He smiled to himself. Now, all that he needed was a target. He walked down the High Street.

Paul was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was a skinny boy whose legs were so thin that they looked as if you could break them. He was so skinny that the other kids used to joke about him getting blown away when it was windy. He was helping old Mrs McTell by sweeping the snow off the path and putting salt down to melt the ice. He liked Mrs McTell.

Paul had his head down and was sweeping a piece of ice when the snowball struck him full in the face. He staggered(踉跄) back, put his hand to his lip and wiped off the dirt. He heard Ryan laughing and shouting names. But Paul ignored it. He had had problems with Ryan at school and did not want to stir up more trouble. He ducked down and made his way round to the back of Mrs McTell’s to see if she wanted any shopping.

Bored by the silence, Ryan soon gave up and walked down to the park. It was a short-cut to home and by now his fingers were aching with the cold. The park pond was frozen over and Ryan laughed at a couple of ducks, waddling(摇摆着走) on the ice. They were finding it hard to keep balance. Quickly, Ryan picked up a stick and without thinking made his way onto the ice. In his mind’s eye, he could see the feathers flying as he hit one of the ducks.

Ryan was a few yards out when the ice cracked. It sounded like gun shot across the frozen park. The ice broke into pieces before his eyes. Screaming, he fell straight down into the icy water. The ducks flew off.

1. 所续写短文的词数应为100左右。
2. 续写部分为一段,开头语已为你写好。

Paul heard Ryan’s voice as he entered the park.
