A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighborhood, I couldn’t imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” His blue eyes were hopeful.

“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.

“Yes,” his voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?”

My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I’ll get my money.”

The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for some tea?” Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie.”

The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. “What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”

The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years ago, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.

This was it.

Today was the day.

Finally, she would be able to see her again.

It’d been five long years. Her university days now felt like a lifetime ago. When Jennifer thought back to it, she didn’t like the girl she had been then, but when she thought about Yui Fay,   that discomfort disappeared and her whole life lit up.

Actually, the exact time and place for meeting was yet to be appointed. Yui Fay promised to call her instantly the flight landed. Jennifer couldn’t be more excited. She kept imagining their meeting —how they would run towards each other, hugging and talking of the old times. As she imagined, happiness spread through her body.

It was time to get dressed. As she was struggling about what to wear, she spotted a red summer dress, which she bought that day in Barcelona. She would never forget that day five years before. After a hard week at university, Yui Fay and she spontaneously(心血来潮地) bought bus tickets to Barcelona. They slept on the bus and then spent the whole day exploring the city. Walking past a shop, they were attracted by the red summer dress. Yui Fay said it would look perfect on Jennifer. In fact, every day with Yui Fay was wonderful.

After university Yui Fay went back to China where she took over her family’s business, while Jennifer took the job in an office. They promised to keep in contact. But then life happened. The occasional calls faded with time and they had not talked for over two years. Yet, of all her friends, Yui Fay was still the one she felt the closest to. She knew all her fears, dreams, and her wildest stories. She knew that if something happened, Yui Fay would be there for her no matter what. And viceversa. Some friendships just survive the passage of time.

Yet the idea of meeting her was also terrifying. What if…? The idea was too hard to put into words. What if the person she was so fond of was no longer? What if this dinner turned out to be nothing more than a meeting between two boring businesswomen?

She put on the red summer dress and kept checking the phone anxiously.

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: A beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors) was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.

I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.

One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify (伪造) records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.

But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board (董事会), but he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”

The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through. “…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”

To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.

The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So, if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”

Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, “I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day of the year, I went for breakfast in downtown Little Rock.

Even at 8 a. m. there was a waiting line at the cafe. Customers stood in groups, chatting and rubbing their cold hands together, waiting to share a hot breakfast and more conversation before pouring into the stores for bargains. I could feel the cheery excitement of the holidays, but it was tied with the usual stress that spoils the season with layers of anxiety and tiredness.

Finally, I was seated by a large window. I noticed that it had begun to rain lightly outside. “Oh, no,” I complained. “I’m going to be dashing around in the rain. Shopping will be messy today!” I heard others complaining, too.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed an elderly man on the other side of the window, making his way carefully down the sidewalk. He was carrying a black umbrella in his left hand, sheltering himself from the rain, and balancing several brooms (扫帚) on his right shoulder. Beneath a thin gray coat, he was dressed in a brown pants. A striped ski cap protected his head and thick glasses covered his eyes. As I watched, he smiled and stepped politely aside to allow a couple to rush by.

“Who’s that?” I asked the waitress.

“That’s Melvin. He’s been walking these streets for years and years. I’ve heard he put several orphans through college selling those brooms. He’s almost blind and in his seventies, but he keeps on keeping on. I don’t know how he does it. Everybody buys brooms from him. He lives a poor life but he was a wonderful person. People here have always been good to him.”

Suddenly I was curious. This dear man could hardly see. Selling brooms on the streets could not earn good money. Melvin was the one who needed help! “So how do he help people?” I asked frankly.
