World's Largest Ball of Paint
Alexandria, Ind.
In 1977, Michael Carmichael set out to create the biggest ball of paint anywhere. Starting with a baseball as center, he painted layer(层)after layer of paint day after day, year after year. The ball weighs more than 1,300 pounds, with more than 24,000 coats of paint, which is recognized by Guinness World Records. Visitors can paint the ball themselves and become part of history.
Mount Horeb Mustard Museum
Mount Horeb, Wis.
It's heaven for hotdog lovers! This museum says that it has to have the world's largest collection of prepared mustard(芥末). Its more than 4,100 bottles of spices(香料)come from 60 nations, including Turkey and China.
Visitors learn the history of mustard, from how it's made to how it's advertised and sold. The museum's creator, Burry Levenson, loves mustard so much that he even puts it on ice cream!
The Museum of Dirt
Boston, Mass.
The museum is the idea of Glenn Johnson. In the labeled(贴有标签的)glass bottles are such treasures as dirt from the Great Wall of China, as well as sand from a desert in Sandi Arabia and Omaha Beach in France. Best of all, the cost of seeing this museum is dirt cheap: It's free.
Paper House
Rockport, Mass.
Swedish immigrant(移民)Ellis Stenman was much ahead of his time in 1922, when he started to build a two-room house almost completely out of newspaper. At the time, people didn't give much—if any—thought to recycling paper. In fact, "recycling" wasn't even a word yet. The house is framed(以……做框架)with wood, but the walls are made of 215 layers of newspaper. In all, he used about 100,000 newspapers.

Diving
Divers troop to Palawan, which lies at the very heart of the Coral Triangle biodiversity corridor(走廊). The highlight is Tubbataha Reefs National Park, which is accessible only by live-aboard boat from late March to mid-June.
Island hopping
Top of most visitors’ lists is boarding a trusty speed boat and setting off to explore Palawan’s 1780 islands. Why not take a multiday journey, camping on remote islands under the stars, far removed from other tourists?
Beaches
The best part about Palawan’s glorious beaches? Only a few are known to the masses. The rest are yours for the taking. EI Nido has a seemingly endless supply of sandy sights. North of EI Nido, a rough road leads to Nacpan Beach. Way up north, the Calamian Islands are often ringed 360-degrees by blindingly white sand.
Jungle adventures
Close to 50% of Palawan’s old-growth forest cover remains untouched, by far the most among Philippine provinces. Naturalists can explore the rainforests in search of animals and birdwatchers migrate from around the globe to spot unusual bird species. Additionally, determined hikers can scale numerous peaks.
Palawan has always had a responsible attitude towards its environment. Against the destruction of coastal ecosystems and illegal logging and fishing, several award-wining resorts are leading the way toward a more sustainable future, mixing native design and low-carbon elements to create living spaces that will last. Ecotourism will play a role in determining the future of the islands.

Researchers work in a controlled greenhouse. They have identified a way that could improve crop production in simulated (模拟的) Martian soil, with different crops grown together. The method is called “intercropping”, invented by ancient Maya farmers in what is now Central America.
In their experiments, the researchers grew cherry tomatoes, peas and carrots together in small, round containers. Tomatoes grown in this way produced about double the amount of tomatoes grown alone — or “monocropped” — in the same simulated Martian soil. The tomatoes were also bigger. They flowered and matured earlier, gave more fruit per plant and had thicker stems. The amounts of peas and carrots did not increase with intercropping.
Rebeca Goncalves, an astrobiologist and lead writer of the study, said the research is the first time the intercropping technique was used in space soil, and that it was a big find — one that they could now build further research on. The crops were grown in simulated Martian regolith, a soil with no organic matter — a near-perfect physical and chemical match to real Martian soil.
The researchers added useful bacteria and nutrients. They also controlled the gases, temperature and humidity inside the greenhouse to match conditions expected in a Martian greenhouse. Intercropping involves growing plants with properties that could help each other grow. The method makes the best use of resources including water and nutrients.
The researchers said the tomato plants in intercropping may have benefited from being close to the pea plants. That is because the peas are good at turning nitrogen from the air, with the help of bacteria introduced into the soil, into an important nutrient. Overall, the tomatoes, peas and carrots grew well, though not as well as in Earth soil in the same greenhouse.
1. What is the benefit of intercropping mentioned in the article?A.Increasing crop yield. | B.Preventing soil pollution. |
C.Decreasing sunlight exposure. | D.Reducing water consumption. |
A.Enhancing growth of carrots. |
B.Increasing fruit production in tomatoes. |
C.Transforming nitrogen into a crucial nutrient. |

【推荐2】“What’s your favorite color?” is a common question, particularly among children. However, there is a new color that might offer a partial solution to global warming by one day reducing the need for air conditioning (AC).
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, AC only causes a part of global greenhouse gas emissions. But that threat will continue to grow as temperatures rise with climate change, and people install (安装) more AC units. Facing this problem, researchers at Purdue University tried to replace the need for conditioning power and invented the world’s whitest paint. It is so white that it could efficiently reflect enough sunlight to cool off buildings.
In 2021, the researchers focused on two key parts of the white paint. The first is that the chemical mixture barium sulfate (BaSO3) can effectively reflect light. The second is that BaSO3 particles change in size allowing the paint to reflect more incoming light. The white paint reflects 98.1% of solar rays and sends out infrared heat (红外线热量) at the same time. Using highly accurate temperature-reading technology, researchers found that the paint kept surfaces 34.2°C cooler, even during the hottest hours of the day.
The white paint can be a suitable choice to replace traditional AC. Air cooling power uses an about 5 kilowatts per 1000 square meter, but the researchers showed that their white paint could double that amount of power. If this innovation (革新) is applied to the outside of buildings, AC will be replaced with paint.
The team is optimistic about getting this paint into the market. They are working with a company at present. The white color can change the way people think about their cooling systems. Instead of installing large AC units that already use a lot of electrical power, people can turn to the world’s whitest paint to do the same job.
1. Why did the researchers develop the whitest paint?A.To cut the cost of decorating buildings. |
B.To collect more sunlight to warm up rooms. |
C.To reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. |
D.To improve the cooling effect of air conditioners. |

Pure Dairy is a food company which specializes in making yogurt which is often sold in plastic containers. But plastic, unlike paper, can take hundreds of years to break down, leading to long-lasting waste. Now, Pure Dairy’s first-ever paper cups will replace the plastic cups previously used to hold its yogurt products.
“People have been asking for a paper cup, and we welcome this challenge to start reducing our plastic use, and to spark a conversation about how we can drive change together. I think we all have a role to play in protecting our planet.” said Hamdi Ulukaya, Pure Dairy’s founder and chief executive officer.
Pure Dairy currently produces yogurt, creamers, coffee and plant-based drinks. Many of these products already come in paper-based, recyclable packaging. But its yogurt products had always been sold in plastic. That’s why the company has spent the past two years working to create a paper cup. They wanted it to hold yogurt just as well as the plastic cups do. The paper cup is expected to hit grocery shelves at the end of this year, which is 80 percent paperboard made from renewable materials.
The new paper cup still has a thin plastic lining to maintain the quality of the product and prevent the yogurt from seeping into the packaging. Although packaging with mixed materials is often not recyclable, Pure Dairy will continue working with partners to make it happen. This group works with businesses to make their products and packaging more sustainable, meaning they want to use resources so that they will continue to be available in the future. The yogurt company says it hopes to put more sustainable packaging on shelves all over the country which will use less plastic and more paper.
1. Why will the company sell yogurt in paper containers?A.To reduce waste. | B.To create a new packaging. |
C.To recycle the plastic containers. | D.To specialize in making paper cups. |
A.Share. | B.Continue. | C.Dominate. | D.Activate. |
A.It can be recyclable. | B.It is made of plastic and paper. |
C.It doesn’t satisfy the public’s demands. | D.It is not the joint effort of the companies. |
A.Paper cups may replace the plastic cups. | B.A lot of paper products will be available. |
C.A renewable material will replace yogurt. | D.The company hopes to produce more packaging. |

Applications for degree courses beginning this autumn were up by 15% this January, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. A spokesman for the Royal Economic Society said applications to do economics at A-level were also up.
Professor John Beath, the president of the society and a leading lecturer at St Andrews University, said his first-year lectures --- which are open to students from all departments --- were drawing crowds of 400, rather than the usual 250.
“There are a large number of students who are not economics majors (专业), who would like to learn something about it. One of the things I have done this year is to relate my teaching to contemporary events in a way that one hasn’t traditionally done.” He said.
University applications rose by 7% last year, but there were rises above average in several subjects. Nursing saw a 15% jump, with people’s renewed interest in careers in the pubic sector (部门), which are seen as more secure in economic crisis.
A recent study showed almost two thirds of parents believed schools should do more to teach pupils about financial matters, and almost half said their children had asked them what was going on, although a minority (少数) of parents felt they did not understand it themselves well enough to explain.
Zack Hocking, the head of Child Trust Funds, said, “It’s possible that one good thing to arise from the downturn (低迷) will be a generation that’s financially wiser and better equipped to manage their money through times of economic uncertainty.”

Bicester Village
According to a 2019 Visit Britain report, over 275,000 Chinese tourists visit the UK every year. And where do they go? It claimed that “they are mostly interested in symbolic elements: the Royal Family, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey”.
Then there’s the shopping. Bicester Village, a vast retail estate on the outskirts of the Oxfordshire town, is the second most visited UK attraction for Chinese tourists after Buckingham Palace, and three in four Chinese visitors head there.
King’s College, Cambridge
A famous tree, for Chinese people at least, can be found in King’s College, Cambridge. The willow(柳树), regarded to be a holy thing to lost youth, is mentioned in a much-loved poem by Xu Zhimo, who spent a year studying at King’s College - Taking Leave of Cambridge Again.
Bonn
The former West German capital is another popular port of call. Chinese love classical music, particularly Beethoven, making his birthplace an obvious highlight of any trip to Europe. The city’s tourist board offers maps in three foreign languages: English, Chinese and Japanese.
Verona
Both British and Chinese travelers flock to Venice, Rome and Florence, but Verona typically appears higher on the wish lists of China’s tourists. That’s because of the country’s adoration of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The play is popular on UK shores, of course, but the love is doubled in China as it was among the first of the Shakespeare’s works to be translated into Chinese Mandarin. Its plot bears a striking resemblance(相似之处) to a famous Chinese folk tale, The Butterfly Lovers. Expect to see queues at the popular House of Juliet on Via Cappello (a statue of the character stands beneath her balcony).

Out of more than 1,000 Americans who were surveyed, more than half said that they couldn’t recall the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors. And 44% said that they couldn’t remember their relatives’ phone numbers. In their eyes, there is no point in filling their heads with phone numbers if they’re all stored in smart phones that are with them almost all the time.
In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia. More than 90% of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online extension of their brains. Rote memorization was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That’s making us worse at remembering things.
Researchers found that when people expected to have access to information online, they were less likely to remember actual facts, but more likely to remember how to find them. As a result, we are already becoming one with our computer tools, growing into interconnected systems that remember less by knowing information than by knowing where the information can be found.
However, some believe it isn’t necessarily a bad thing—maybe it gives them more chances to think through things. We certainly have access to more knowledge now than ever, even if it isn’t all stored in our brains.
Even so, I still believe that there are more risks to this new world of memory beyond losing our ability to recall some information such as who the 15th President was. That kind of information may always be a click away, but the important things are personal ones, like the way your parents smiled at your wedding. It’s harder to recall or find online. If you’re relying on yourself to keep track of those memories, they will be much more meaningful.
