Ashley Power's mother bought a computer for her when she was eight. When she was thirteen, she was surfing the Internet regularly, but she couldn't find anywhere for teenagers to meet and talk. And one day she thought, “If I had my own website, I'd make it a really interesting site for teenagers.”

So, when Ashley was sixteen, she launched her own website, called Goose Head. Young people got excited when they searched on this website and step by step they introduced the site to others and made more friends. She had no idea how big a success it would be, but three years later, the site was the most successful teen site in the USA! It was getting 100,000 hits every day, and Ashley had about 30 employees.

After a few years, the website closed down. Then Ashley, who lives in Los Angeles, was asked to write a book called Goose Head Guide to Life. It's safe to say that this is a book for teens that they'll enjoy. The book is about how to design a website and start a business. It begins with a section called “All about Ashley”, where Ashley tells readers what it is like to be the boss of a company when you are only sixteen. “I was so happy. But it was crazy in a lot of ways. I was stressed. I mean, I was only sixteen — I didn't even have a car! If you were sixteen and you had your own company, you'd be stressed, too!”

In an interview Ashley gave advice to teenagers who wanted to start their own business, “Just be strong and have your dreams and work hard at them. And don't listen when people tell you that you can't do it, because I heard 'no' a lot. Just keep going until you hear 'yes'!”

【推荐1】Biodegradable(可降解的) food packaging is designed to detect to what degree the food has gone bad by changing its color. Best-before labels are often poor predictors of when food becomes dangerous to eat, which can lead to waste and food poisoning, says Benedetto Marelli at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. So he and his colleagues tried to create the package that can react to changes in food.

They made four films(膜) similar to plastic package, each consisting of two layers. One layer was made from a protein extracted from silkworm silk, while the other was made of one of four so-called covalent organic frameworks (COFs). These materials contain carbon and hydrogen, as well as atoms like oxygen or nitrogen, all arranged in a network that allows air and water to go through easily.

After checking the films were non-toxic and strong, the researchers tried to compost(堆肥处理) them. For the best performing film, 50 percent of it degraded after being placed in soil for 30 days, which is comparable to existing biodegradable plastics.

The material also changed colour when immersed in water with different pH values, due to the COF layer’s interaction with the liquid. Because the pH of food increases as it spoils, the researchers tried to use a piece of the film as a colour-changing label attached to a packet of raw chicken. The label started off orange but turned yellow and got 17 percent lighter after 20 hours at 30℃, indicating that the meat had begun to spoil. The researchers also loaded the COF layer with a chemical. After 15 days, so ya beans packaged in the film and left in high heat and humidity went bad, but only a third as much as beans wrapped in traditional plastic.

“For a successful market entry, the material will need to be affordable and easy to produce. The standard for competing with plastic production is very high.” says Marelli.

【推荐2】Tasked with helping to make sure Utrecht’s canals remain full of life, and convincing everyone it wasn’t an April Fools’ Day joke, two ecologists in the Dutch city have invented the world’ s first “fish doorbell”.

An underwater, live-streaming camera at the “Weerdsluis” lock door allows residents to ring a virtual doorbell which can be heard by the local lock keeper when they see that fish are trying to get through. A lock is a gate that raises or lowers canal boats into different levels of water separated by two doors, and a sluice is a small fish-sized door that allows water and fish to pass between them.

“You have to see the canal as a motorway for fishes. Sometimes you see literally dozens of fish floundering in front of the lock gate, so a fish jam is created,” says underwater nature expert Mark Heukelum. “The Weerdsluis is the link between the Vecht and the Kromme Rijn. In winter the fish swim deeper, because it is warmer and safer there. In summer they want to go to shallow water so that they can reproduce,” he adds.

Mark Heukelum came up with the doorbell idea while working with wildlife ecologist Anne Nijs on a project to highlight the biodiversity in Utrecht’ s canals. At that time they noticed how the lock keeper Patrick opened the sluice to allow a large group of arriving fish to pass through.

Nijs says it’s a great way to connect residents with their aquatic neighbors, and noted that when Mark took the idea to the municipality they were very excited. The only uncertainty was why they created a camera and a signal to Patrick when they could just install a motion-activated (动作感应的) sensor.

Mark Heukelum explains: “Technically that is probably possible, but this is of course much more fun. I am already addicted to it myself and watch it every night. You suddenly see a large pike swimming by or a lobster. It would be nice if you could spot a rarer fish such as a bindweed or bleak. Or maybe an eel.”

1. What can we know about the “Weerdsluis”?
A.It connects two places on Utrecht’s canals.
B.It is a fish species found in Utrecht’s canals.
C.It is a group of residents on Utrecht’s canals.
D.It controls the water temperatures in Utrecht’s canals.
2. What does the underlined word “floundering” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Performing.B.Settling down.
C.Struggling.D.Giving birth.
3. What gave Mark Heukelum the idea of the “fish doorbell”?
A.Anne Nijs’ suggestion.B.A TV program.
C.An April Fools’ Day joke.D.A scene at the “Weerdsluis” lock door.
4. Why did Mark Heukelum prefer a “fish doorbell” to a motion-activated device?
A.It’s technically much easier.B.It costs much less to build.
C.It is much more interesting.D.It’s environmentally friendly.

【推荐3】When Denis wants to relax at work, he steps into a quiet room, sits in a chair, slips on a virtual-reality headset, and escapes to the beach. For Denis, those minutes are a tool he relies on regularly to both relieve and prevent stress.

He's not the only one at his company to use the room, where workers can also use a headset to watch a moon walk, take a virtual roller-coaster ride or access a meditation (冥想) app.

Research shows VR can help reduce pain and anxiety. But it's not yet clear why it works. Experts believe it's related to the technology's power to distract.

''Whatever their problems are, whatever their stresses are, they can literally neglect them and have a different emotional pulse, '' Denis said.

Virtual-reality headsets haven't taken off with consumers, but they're now powerful and inexpensive enough for companies to consider investing in them to help make workers and customers happier.

The headsets may help people take a virtual break from their surroundings, but there are challenges to consider. Ramon Llamas, a tech market researcher, noted that there could be challenges in handing out headsets. Some people get sick or dizzy while using virtual reality, and the headsets may get dirty or broken. There's also the task of quickly familiarizing people with using the headsets, especially since VR adoption has been so limited and the ways they are controlled can vary.

For now, Llamas said, he's concerned about privacy and security. What if, for instance, someone manages to back into a headset and insert some content into what you're watching?

Another potential issue is the managing of the headsets and software that goes along with them. This is likely not a complication for an office like Umber Realty's, where people can simply take a headset off if they feel something wrong. But it could be more of a problem if you're stuck in a dentist's chair. ''The last thing you want is that in the middle of extracting a tooth something goes wrong.'' Llamas said.

1. What does Denis's company use Virtual Reality for?
A.Improving the customers' experience.
B.Displaying the schedule of his company.
C.Relieving the staff's work pressure.
D.Saving the trouble of transportation.
2. How can the VR devices help the users by Denis?
A.Ignoring reality for the moment.B.Improving their thinking.
C.Designing work for the company.D.Investing in a new industry.
3. What does the author focus on in the last three paragraphs?
A.The potential problems with VR.
B.The privacy policy available for VR.
C.The management of these devices in the market.
D.The standards the VR technology is to follow.
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A.VR, a promising business in future!B.Is VR always making us relax?
C.The adoption of VR needs investments.D.Are we saying ''goodbye'' to VR?
