Mr Jason has taught math in a remote rural area for ten years. Last year, he was awarded (奖励) $2,000 as “The Amazing Teacher”. People thought he would move with his parents to a nice house in the city. But he surprised then all. When students came back from their holiday, they found the chairs, desks and projectors (投影仪) were all replaced. Even the walls of the classroom were painted white.

As a teacher, Mr Jason not only focuses on students’ studies, but also helps students overcome the difficulties in life. In the rural area, most families are poor and some students often dropped out of school. Mr Jason always tries to help then out.

【推荐1】It was last weekend when my kids and I flew to Texas for my daughter’s trampoline (蹦床) competition, plus a couple of side trips. We would tour the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. We would visit Waco’s Magnolia Market. We would play outdoor mini golf in January.

We would have nothing to complain about! We would be leaving behind school and work for a hotel pool and having wall-to-wall fun!

And yet — we found things to complain about. The pool was bigger in that other hotel! Why do you get to shower first? They call this coffee?

Luckily, I remembered to take my imaginary coat of armor (盔甲) with me. I’ve learned to put it on as soon as we arrive somewhere as no complaint can get through it. They simply bounce off it and land harmlessly at my feet. I shrug (耸肩). I smile.

For three days, we had great fun. Silly complaints were ignored, and we had greater fun. Until it was time to return the car, get on a plane, and fly home.

Except our flight was canceled. And so was the flight after that. And once that airline resumed (恢复) flying, there would be no room on any of its flights for another 21 hours.

We spent the next couple of hours securing seats for the next evening, tracking down our already-checked bags, and finding a hotel room. We hit the hotel pool before bed. We swam well into the night, my kids making up songs and singing and jumping and laughing.

And that was when it hit me that family travel is a lot more than I thought before. It’s discovering that things don’t have to go right to go well. It’s remembering that joy and memories are where you make them, not where you find them. My kids made them at the tail end of a very long day, in a tiny pool near a Texas airport. So I did too.

【推荐3】Born on April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen was an emotional, yet imaginative, child. His father, a poor shoemaker, died in 1816. With a mother who was very superstitious(迷信的)and unable to read or write, the boy received little education as a child.

Andersen traveled to Copenhagen. There, he hoped to become an actor or singer. He was lucky enough to spend some time with the Royal Theater, but when his voice changed, he had to leave. Luckily, one of the directors helped him by arranging his education.

Andersen gained admission to the University of Copenhagen in 1828, and his literary career began soon afterwards. He hoped to achieve success with poems and plays, but underestimated the kind of stories which have made him famous. Though not particularly fond of children, he had a gift for entertaining them. This led a friend to suggest he write down the stories he invented.

Many of Andersen’s tales are based on folklore, and many are products of his own imagination. All of them are told in a humorous and informal style that children loved from the start. Few serious critics, however, took notice of them when they first appeared.

Before his death in 1875, Andersen regularly traveled around Europe, and was enthusiastically welcomed everywhere he went. Because he had always wanted to be famous, he worked hard to gain a reputation in European literary circles. Being a rather vain man, he complained in ”The Fairy Tale of My Life“, one of three autobiographies he wrote, that people were not interested in his “serious” writing.

Nowadays, of course, Hans Christian Andersen is a household name. Whether he would have liked it or not, millions of children and adults will always be grateful for the magic his stories have brought to their lives.
