On August 27,2019,my friend and I boarded the first leg of our journey from Vancouver Island, taking us to Peru,South America.
Twentyfour hours and four airports later we landed in Cusco,Peru,a city of one million people.Coming from Vancouver Island, where we live and which is only 100 feet above sea level,we knew that we were now at a much higher altitude (海拔)—over 11,000 feet—and needed time to get used to the scarcer oxygen (缺氧) levels! We followed the advice of other travellers and the locals:drink lots of coca leaf tea and rest for a couple of hours before any activity.
We were soon hiking through the ruins (遗迹) and surrounding ancient castles of Cusco.Leaving Cusco the next day,we stopped at the Moray Ruins, which were used for farming by the Incas.Their size and unique design should be considered a lesson in historical engineering skills. This Inca site is one of the least known tourist destinations, but it’s one of the most interesting places to visit.
Arriving in the beautiful Sacred Valley,we stayed at Willka T’ika for the next week. This place is wonderful. We enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals, all made with local produce by loving Quechua people.
You can’t go to Peru without visiting historic Machu Picchu. The “road” up to the ruins is made up of an endless series of switchbacks (急转弯),resulting in cold sweats (汗).It was worth the ride though,as we walked through the ruins.
Too soon,it was time to leave Peru.We learned the unique history of Inca,Quechua culture, and the farming methods still widely practiced. The best thing we took away was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth and everyone they meet.We promised to be more mindful upon returning home to Vancouver Island.

Tiger research: Indonesia While sustainable tourism helps protect many of the Indonesia’s wildlife, one of its rarest species, the Sumatran tiger, suffers as the island’s cities expand into its forest habitat. Fortunately Biosphere Expeditions have created a trip that not only benefits the seriously endangered animal, but helps protect it too. Based in a remote camp in the heart of the rainforest, volunteers will be needed to tour the landscape, documenting tracks, kills and scats (粪便) to aid important research into the lives of these big cats. Cycling tour: Cambodia With an ancient world of temples and jungles, Cambodia is the kind of country that needs to be explored slowly. PEPY Tours offers 621 miles of green fields, dusty orange tracks and winding rivers on its 15-day cycling expeditions. Money goes directly to local people through homestays and lunches, while tours allow visitors to learn Khmer customs and contribute to ongoing community development projects. Travel shows the big picture.
Khot believes we may lose ourselves in our own lives from time to time. “Sometimes we can’t separate our daily existence from the broader perspective,” she argues. “
When you are on the way, chances are that you will deal with flight delays, slow buses, bad food, horrible accommodation and much more. As Khot pointed out, if there is one constant in a traveler’s life, it is that travel will throw up situations that challenge you. You may have made the most detailed plan, but the next minute something just goes wrong.
Travel makes you more grateful.
Whether you travel from a big city to the quiet countryside, or vice versa, there will come a moment when you are grateful for all you have. “When you meet someone with one leg who is hiking up a hill, you will close your eyes for a second and say ‘thank you’.” she said.
Travel helps you overcome your shyness.
During travel, you’ll be forced to communicate with many more people than you used to.
A.Travel makes you more adaptable. |
B.Travel makes you more single-minded. |
C.They’re an important part of the experience. |
D.You may meet something pleasant when you travel. |
E.Travel provides a chance to get away from your routine. |
F.And sometimes you won’t even be able to use your first language. |
G.You’ll go through anger and disappointment, but hopefully, you’ll learn to laugh at it and move on. |

Peter E 1:00 PM. | Thanks for meeting today. I wanted to touch base with all of you regarding the new ad campaign we just launched. Can you give me an update on the statistics? |
Bob 1:02 PM | Sure. The audience out here in the East is responding very well to the commercials. Our sales have increased by about 40% since the launch. I think the emotional aspect of the ad is working. |
Peter E 1:04 PM. | That’s really good to her. Is there anything we should be concerned about? |
Bob 1:05 PM | I’m just worried about the cost. I looked over the budget for the campaign, and it seems extraordinarily high. I’m not sure if the increased sales will cover the costs. |
Camilla 1:07 PM | That’s what 1 was thinking too. My territory isn’t seeing the same increase in sales a5 Bob’s. And the costs are similar here as they are out East. |
Bob 1:09 PM | We should rethink when and where we play the commercials. The sales increases are coming mainly from younger people. Maybe we should focus more on social media outlets rather than the traditional and more expensive methods like television. |
Camilla 1:10PM | I completely agree. |
Peter E 1:11 PM. | Thar’s certainly something to consider. I’ll bring this up to my team here. Camilla, can you give me an idea of your figures? |
Camilla 1:12PM | Sure. Our sales saw a slight increase of 5% this last month. |
