Jenny lived in a small village. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky. She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird.

When Jane was in the fourth grade, one day, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However, to her surprise, her paper came back with an “F” on it. The teacher told her it was nothing but a “fairy tale”, which could never become true. Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad. In her heart, she didn't want to accept that a girl couldn't become a pilot. But as the years went by, Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her. “Girls can't become airline pilots; never have, never will. You're crazy.” Finally, Jenny gave up her dream.

However, when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future. One day, Mrs. Marsha asked all the students to think about the question: “What will you do in the future?” At that time, Jenny hesitated for a while. She was worried that she would be laughed at again. But soon she felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream of becoming a pilot right away.

As the graduation ceremony’s class speaker, Verda Tetteh, a senior at Fitchburg High School, had just finished her speech and taken a seat when the school made an exciting announcement that Verda had been awarded Fitchburg High School’s General Excellence Scholarship, valued at $ 40,000. She had a few moments to reflect as the ceremony continued. Ten minutes later, she knew what to do. She returned to the platform and apologized for interrupting. Then she made an announcement that shocked the crowd. She refused the scholarship and requested that the funds instead be awarded to a student who needed it more than she did.

“I am very grateful for this, but I also know that I am not the one who needs this the most,” Verda said.

Her generous gesture shocked the audience, made up of her fellow classmates, their families and faculty (全体教员) members. Her mother, Rosemary, loudly cheered her daughter on from the audience.

Verda is planning on going to Harvard University in the fall as a pre-med (医学院预科的) student. The straight-A honor student has already been awarded a full scholarship for her Ivy League college education. However, she could have used her school’s scholarship to help pay for additional expenses such as books, computers and living expenses.

Verda knew, though, just how important a college scholarship is to a student whose family is financially struggling. Her mother earned her bachelor’s degree from a local community college at age 47, while raising her four children and holding down two jobs to support her family. Her mother’s determination to get an education despite her financial hardship inspired the young woman’s selfless decision. She wanted the funds to go to a student pursuing a community college degree, just as her mother once had.

That day, Rosemary took pride in her daughter. “Now I’m 100% sure she is ready to go into the world on her own,” she said.

【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Heart beats harder, time escapes me,” I sang as I played along with my guitar. It was sunset at the beach and no one was around — my favorite time to play.

Just as I got to the chorus, I heard a voice join in with mine in perfect harmony. I turned around to see who it was and came face to face with Liam Payne! Shocked, I stopped singing.

“Hey, you don’t have to stop,” he said in his cute British accent. I tried to reply, but nothing came out. “Here, sit,” he said, walking toward a beach towel. Tripping over my feet, I sat down beside him. I didn’t know what to say, so I just stared at the ground.

“So what’s your name?” he asked.

“Issy,” I replied.

“I’m Liam. Did you ever think about playing that song in another chord(和弦)?” he asked.

“No, I’m not good with higher chords,” I said.

“We should try it together,” he said, showing me how to play the chord. With his beautiful and unique voice, along with impressive chords, he began to sing my favorite song.

“Liam!” I heard Harry’s voice calling as the rest of One Direction came toward us.

“Hi guys, this is Issy,” he said. They all said hi and Harry asked Liam if he was ready to go.

“Yeah, but hey, Issy, do you want to come hang out with us?” Liam asked me.

“Sure!” I replied eagerly.

We grabbed our things and I followed the guys to a nearby campfire they had set up. I sat down in a lawn chair next to him.

“You must be chilly,” Liam turned to me. “Here, take my sweater.”

I put it on and began singing, laughing, and telling scary stories with One Direction. As we got familiar, I told them that I loved singing but didn’t know whether I could make it.

“You’ve got potential,” Liam looked at me seriously. “Why not have a try?”

Lying on bed after we parted, I was lost in thought.

I once work in Indonesia school teaching English on a supporting program. One afternoon, while I was walking across the campus, I noticed a girl sitting on a stone, her head bowed over a notebook, completely absorbed in her studies, her fingers tracing the lines of text as she mouthed the words silently. My footsteps interrupted her, and she stood up to walk towards me. “My name is Andara,” she introduced herself. She asked if I could help her improve her English. I could tell it took immense courage for the young Indonesian girl to approach me and ask for help.

“I want to go to a US university,” she said with confidence. I was surprised. I asked to pay a visit to her family before I made any promises. After a two-hour bus ride, I met her family. I realized they would never be able to afford the expenses of a US university. Andara lived in a two-room house crowded with her parents and two brothers. The walls were dingy patched with years of wear and tear. Moved by her eagerness, I agreed to work with Hani on a volunteer basis to help her pursue her educational dreams.

Andara’s enthusiasm was increasing with her language ability, but I was becoming more and more discouraged. The prospect (前景) of taking part in the Test of English Fluency in Jakarta filled me with worry, as the entire examination was an impossible challenge for someone who had never interacted with a computer before.

One day I received the announcement of a scholarship opportunity for a major US university. After reading the requirements, I knew Andara couldn’t meet the qualifications. I told her that there was only a slim chance and encouraged her to be more “realistic” about her dream. But she remained determined.

“Will you send in my name?” she asked.

I couldn’t turn her down. I completed the application, with the painful truth about her academic life, but also with my praise of her courage and perseverance (坚持不懈).
