With the vacation time around the comer, Joe was eagerly waiting for the arrival of his grandchildren. To well prepare his home for the kids, Joe was as busy as a bee, occupying himself cleaning the home, harvesting the garden, rearranging the household items, buying the favourite gifts for the children, etc. It was in such busy arrangements that he lost his beloved watch. The watch was gifted by his wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch and it became his only companion after his wife’s death.

However, Joe was unaware of the missing watch and was joyful receiving the kids at home. When he was about to take a bath the next day, it struck him that the watch was missing. He recalled that the last time he saw the watch, he was arranging things in the barn(谷仓). Heartbroken, Joe stood still in silence. Noticing his dullness, all the grandchildren gathered around and asked what troubled him.

“Dear children, I lost the most precious watch I have ever had and I ever got in my life. It was gifted by your grandma and I lost it while cleaning the home! On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’re sorry, but your work assignment has ended as of today.” My heart sank.

I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival. I did everything I could to give Kristil a good life, but there were some things my love couldn’t fix. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed the Christmas tree prices.

“Is everything OK?” Kristil asked. “You seem worried.”

“I got some bad news yesterday,” I told her. “But it is OK, honey. Please select your favorite Christmas tree! Let’s take it home!” I didn’t want my daughter to discover the fact that I was unemployed. She started telling me a few months ago that she wanted a Christmas tree.

“Daddy, is it too expensive?” She pointed to a Christmas tree and said to me carefully.

“Absolutely not,” I told her. “Let’s take it home!”

I pretended to swipe my card and pay, and quietly made up my mind to set off on my moneymaking pursuits. Over the next week, I applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. There was no suitable position for me in this world. I felt as if the world was closing in on me.

The day before Christmas, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I went back home, frustrated.

With Mother’s Day approaching, Bruce, a boy of nine years old, with his little sister Alina-six years old wanted their mother to be the happiest one of that day. But they were too young to get a job, even if a part-time one. What could they do? There was only one week left. They felt sad whenever they thought their mother would spend her Mother’s Day without gifts.

Money is hard to make. Buying a bunch of flowers would cost a large sum of money for them. One day when they were wandering at the street, they heard Mr Green was complaining that he had no time to wash those soda pop bottles. It is a kind of soda pop sold in bottles and the bottles can be washed and filled again. Mr Green ran that grocery shop by himself, so he had no time to wash them.

“Would you like to try, Alina?” Bruce asked his sister suddenly. Alina nodded her head without hesitation. After all, both of them knew that maybe it was an opportunity for them to make money for the flowers.

They walked a few steps and came near Mr Green. They looked up at Mr Green and asked whether they could help him to wash those bottles. Mr Green looked at them in astonishment until he was told the reason. He agreed and promised that he would pay 0.1 dollar for every bottle.

Bruce and Alina were very happy even though they knew they would have a busy week.

They came to Mr Green’s shop in the next seven days when they came back from school. On the morning of Mother’s Day, they got the pay—dollars. The boy also had 0.3 dollar saved.

So with a total of 6.4 dollars they walked about a mile to where a flower shop was located. When they came inside, someone asked what they wanted. They told him they wanted to buy some flowers for their mother. The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out their cash asking if that would be enough.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。

I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward, where I worked as a volunteer. Her husband, Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferred from the gurney(轮床)to the hospital bed. Although Connie was in the final stages of her fight against cancer, she was cheerful and always smiled. We got her settled in and then asked if she needed anything.

“Oh, yes,” she said, “would you please show me how to use the TV? I enjoy the soaps so much and I don't want to get behind on what's happening.” Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas, romance novels and movies with a good love story. As we became acquainted, she confided how frustrating it was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her “a silly woman.”

“Oh, I know Bill loves me,” she said, “but he has never been one to say he loves me, or send cards to me.” She sighed and looked out the window at the trees in the courtyard. “I’d give anything if he’d say ‘I love you,’ but it‘s just not in his nature.”

Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to the bed while she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping more, he paced up and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when she no longer watched television and had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill.

He talked about having worked as a carpenter. He and Connie had no children, but they’d been enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could not express his feelings about the fact that his wife was dying.

One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject of women and how we need romance in our lives; how we love to get sentimental(柔情蜜意) cards and love letters.

“Do you tell Connie you love her?” I asked (knowing his answer), and he looked at me as if I was crazy.

“I don’t have to,” he said. “She knows I do!”

“I’m sure she knows,” I said, reaching over and touching his hands rough, “but she needs to hear it, Bill.”

We walked back to Connie’s room. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the bed. He was holding Connie’s hand as she slept. The date was February 12.

Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the hallway, staring at the floor. I already knew from the head nurse that Connie had died at 11 A.M..
