As mountains go,1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn’t particularly grand. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming self-satisfied with its steep, slippery cliffs(悬崖) , resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, a week shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak’s record. Therefore, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the vista; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking over the lip of the cliff with her husband.
When Grant’s mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly,he heard a heavy dull sound, he told the Cornell Daily Sun. Then he heard something chilling: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled wildly. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was no-where to be seen. She'd fallen off the side of the mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees.Grant told his mother,“I hate to say this, but they’re probably going to find a body.”
Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the trail. But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. “My young dumb brain was like, ‘I can do it,’” he says. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, he made a long and difficult journey alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
After 15 minutes of scrambling over the large rock, pushing past prickly(多刺的)brush, and slipping down patches of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled in a kneeling position on a small rocky.
The woman had fallen about 75 feet.
Unexpectedly,she was alive.
“Paula!” Grant shouted.“Paula.Is that you?”

The Amazing Day I Learnt to Swim
There are certain days when we feel our lives change greatly——days we remember for a lifetime. Such, for me, was one morning in July in the Ligonier Valley of Pennsylvania, at a place called Devil’s Hole.
On that morning, my twin brother Roger and I had finished our chores, and the whole day lay before us. “Let’s go to Devil’s Hole,” Roger suggested. I readily agreed, but for all my eagerness there was a feeling of restlessness deep in my heart. Although he had never said a word about it and never laughed at me, Roger could swim and I could not. I had been too afraid to try. Now Roger could slip through the water expertly with the experienced, confident older kids.
Roger led the way to the kitchen door. “Grandma, can we go to Devil’s Hole?” We leaned against the screen, peering into the dark kitchen. Grandma, busy baking cakes stood at the kitchen counter. “Well, I guess the big kids are up there now, but mind the road and be careful in that place,” warned Grandma.
With a yell, Roger pushed open the screen door, dashed through the kitchen and climbed up the stairs. I followed racing to get into my bathing suit. Throwing towels around our necks, we ran across the field next to our house and headed up the dirt road.
Roger and I reached the destination. Sunlight flooded through a break in the trees. A quiet path of smooth stones and mossy ground led to a deep green pool of icy water reflecting a huge rock on the opposite bank, partially in the water. The rock was my province and protection. While the others swam, I always pretended to be trying to catch fish along its base with an old tin can.
Roger joined the older boys and girls at once. They excitedly dived in, swam swiftly across the pool and pulled themselves up on the big rock to feel the sun on the skin, their shouts, splashes and laughter echoing (回响) through the trees.

When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do? Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad?”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads drooping.

Screen Saver
Rene Compean had hiked the park near his home in Southern California numerous times. But after venturing (敢于去) along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.
As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. With no flashlight, only a liter of water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he’d planned.
Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his legs hanging over rocks.
All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were blowing. And he wouldn’t sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a hear, he spent the night on high alert, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet from the police station, showing a blurry (模糊的) image of a man’s legs. The police search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location,
Kuo has an unusual hobby. “I have always loved looking for where photos are taken,” he says. He frequently tries to identify where movie scenes, television shows, or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful.

It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little under the weather, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I had overslept and as a result, was running a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The road was already crowded with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well.
My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact that I was already late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a resolute and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed a tragic accident. It all happened very quickly, as most accidents do. A car full of school children had made a left turning without signaling and as a result, a school bus crashed into it. A few cars behind the school bus rammed into the bus as they could not brake in time and soon it became a pile-up. The already crowded road became jammed with vehicles that came to a crawl. I told my sister that I wanted to help the victims and she nodded silently. She stopped the car not too far from the accident spot.
The scene that greeted us was something I would never forget. It left an unforgettable memory in my mind to date. The impact of the accident had made the school children seriously injured in the car. The driver, a lady, lay on the steering wheel. I rushed to the children who were preschoolers. Two of them were seriously hurt and bleeding from the heads and hands. They were conscious although too weak to realize what had happened. In the meantime, passers-by had called the ambulance and while waiting we tried as best as possible to help the victims.

Night terror
In the middle of the night, as most of the residents slept, much of a 12-story Florida building collapsed, killing lots of people and sending survivors escaping for their lives. In this darkest time, however, the warmth and sparkles of humanity stood out.
Alfredo Lopez and his wife, Marian, were asleep when the first thundering explosion made them awake at 1:14 am on Thursday, June 24. Moments later, a second boom, much louder than the first, shook the bed in their apartment on the fifth floor.
Alfredo rushed to waken his 20-year-old son, Michael, urging him to get dressed, before running to the balcony window. The swirling (旋动) dust and ash made it difficult to see only a few feet in any direction. “All I could see was just white dust, very thick. I could barely see the balcony,” he recalled. The lights cut out and the emergency alarm came on, warning the residents of the Champlain Towers South to move out. They rushed out and ran downstairs, as they realized before the world knew of the disaster, they were fighting to survive by themselves.
On the same fifth floor, in unit 111, a two-bedroom oceanfront apartment, Gabriel Nir, 7 years old and his 5-year-old sister, Chani, all heard the first thunderous noise. Their parents were out of town for some business, leaving their grandma, Garfinkel, who was asleep, to look after them. They panicked and confused, and after a while, they began to realize what had happened and try to make their grandma wake up. Together they walked to the door, only to find it jammed in the twisted doorframe. All measures taken, they had no choice but to shout, “Help! Help! The door won’t open.”, wishing people outside would hear and come to help.
