When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do? Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad?”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads drooping.

I was sitting at the dinner table with my mother and step father discussing two different family drama situations when my mom held her breath and her mouth was hanging wide open. She wasn’t speaking so I went and looked on her phone, and it was a friend request on Facebook from my elder sister who we both hadn’t spoken to in four years when all of my sisters got annoyed with my mom because of her lies about their childhood spread by their biological father. They abandoned me too since I was still living with my mom.
I leaned over and hugged my mom over the shoulders and tucked (把……塞入) my head in between her jaw and shoulder as I myself started getting teary eyed. She said, “I don’t want to accept it right away. That would be odd.” And as she finished saying this messenger was ringing and it was my elder sister calling.
They talked for over two hours. And it was the best thing that I heard my sister who I haven’t met or heard from in four years, and my niece and nephew speaking words and full comprehensible sentences. The last time I saw them, they were so little, only one and three years old. Now, four years later, what will they be like? Maybe a lot taller? Maybe getting cuter? I am very excited and happy and looking forward to seeing them soon.
I told my mom after the phone call was done that I was going to wait for my sister to add me and gave her space. I needed this more than I actually knew.

I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry, “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem! Wonderful!” My eyes twinkled when she poured out her praise. “What time will Father be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him, expecting the praise from an editor in chief of Times.
I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out to the best of my ability. Then I drew pictures to match this greatest poem. As seven o'clock drew near, I confidently placed it on my father’s plate on the dining-room table, waiting for him to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine.
This evening when my father burst in, his mood seemed even more thunderous than usual. An hour late for dinner, he could not sit down but circled the long dining room table with a drink in his hand, complaining nonstop about his employees. Under my steady gaze, he paused and glared at his plate. There was an awful silence. “What’s this?” He reached for the paper and read it. Then he dropped the poem back on the table, saying “Awful”. My eyes were getting wet.
“Ben, Buddy is just a little boy. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written. He needs encouragement,” my mother said. But my father disagreed, “Isn’t there enough terrible poetry in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet.” They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dining room crying. A sad story, but you know, the family wounds healed. My mother began talking to my father again. I even began writing poems again, though I seldom exposed them to my father.

Adam was kind and considerate, and always deeply cherished his wife Zoe. He knew how much she liked to do up her long waterfall-like hair and trim her long and delicate fingernails. He knew she loved strawberries in supermarkets. Meanwhile, Zoe married him without complaint; after all, she loved his diligence, honesty, consideration and gentle quality. In order to improve their lives, the couple joined the ranks of migrant workers and moved into the city.
The New Year flavor of the city was still alive, with spring wind blowing and frequent cold wave appearing, which blocked the smell of spring flowers. The city of the new century was abundant in prosperity and vitality, but it did not belong to them. Adam set up a bed and a mini coal stove in a building under construction where he worked as their temporary home; in a plot of land rented in front of a supermarket, Zoe occupied herself steadily by running a barbecue on a cart (推车).
Every day, she would push her cart out from her humble home, standing in the chilly wind as the morning mist rose. After the supermarket closed, she dragged herself back home, exhausted from her daily routine, but in the faith of love, she lived through each day with hope.
Most days, Adam got off work earlier than her, so he would pick her up at the supermarket and give her a hand. The cart demonstrated their love at that time. The happy and intimate couple walked home pushing the cart, with the street lights shining on the road. It was a beautiful scene that no one appreciated.
One day, when Adam got off work later than usual, he found Zoe sleeping soundly. She was so tired that when she rolled over, she did not even feel her hands sticking out of bed. In grief, he gently took her cold, calloused (长满老茧的), swollen, and red hands full of frostbite (冻疮), tears running down his cheeks.

A Thrilling Camping Trip
Grady and his family went camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
The family had been planning it for a long time and had decided on their destination — the Great National Forest. With food and equipment loaded into the car, the family set off. It was cool inside the car.
Jared, Grady’s younger brother, played with a toy dinosaur and made a lot of noise.
Grady’s mother talked excitedly with his father. Grady put on his headphones and listened to some music. He didn’t want to play with his brother or talk to anyone. After what seemed like hours, the car reached its destination. Grady unloaded his backpack and closed the car door.
“This is going to be a long week,” he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground. Hundreds of tall and green fir trees (枞树), some as tall as church towers, covered the mountainside like a green carpet. It would be going dark soon. Grady had hoped the July weather wouldn’t be too hot but now he was feeling sticky.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family did every summer. His father liked cooking in the open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bee stings. His mother and Jared liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of insect pictures that he had stuck to the walls in his half of their room. Grady didn’t like them and thought they proved that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp — two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started preparing dinner, Grady, looking for somewhere to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep enough to swim in.

On one sunny afternoon in August, Riley and I were over the moon when Mom and Dad said we were renting an RV for family camping trip because our family hadn’t been out for several months. Mom researched nearby areas for a long time and finally zeroed in on a campground up in the mountains, about five hours away from our home. We packed everything we’d need—sleeping bags, tents, chairs, sunscreen, and about a million other things—into the RV and headed off to the mountains.
On the way, Riley and I talked happily about what we would do in the evening: singing, dancing around the fire, enjoying the moon, and a million other things. Arriving at the campsite, Dad drove past a small office building but then hit the brakes when he saw someone run out and wave for him to stop. Apparently, we needed to stop to register for our campsite.
After registering at the front office, Dad drove the RV down to the camping area and parked. “Riley, Sean, you need to help set up the site,” Mom said. We all pitched in, dragging out our camp chairs, and other supplies, and soon we were ready to kick back and relax. Sitting at the picnic table, I popped opened a bag of chips.
“Let’s get some music going,” Dad said. “Hey, where’s the electrical hook-up?” “Oh, boy,” Mom said, “We are in the tents-only area, where there’s no electricity. We’re not even supposed to be in this area with an RV.” We had no choice but to choose another camping site.
Twenty minutes later, we’d broken camp and packed everything back in the RV. Mom drove around the campgrounds until we spotted other RVs and then pulled to a stop. After we unpacked everything, I sniffed and was immediately slammed with the most horrible stench I’d ever smelled in my entire life. “We’re right near the dumpsters!” I groaned. What to do next? Again we had no choice but to find a new one.

As an undergraduate in a university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Catherine had volunteered at the Hope Rescue Mission in her hometown with her mother who served as the shelter’s development director. After working with the homeless and receiving cards from her mom in the mail, Catherine decided to begin her project. “You’ve Got Mail”. She had a huge heart for those in need.
For the people that she was helping, she saw the homelessness firsthand and it was a battle. She thought no one wanted to choose to be homeless, and she always donated the basic needs, including the toiletries, the shampoos and toothbrushes.
In her mind, individuals facing homelessness certainly suffered physically, but for many, the emotional suffering was even more painful. Feeling alone and hopeless cut deeper than feeling hungry and cold. Therefore, she held it that, a kind gesture, such as her project about encouragement cards, could be that light in someone’s day to keep them striving and hoping for a better tomorrow.
One day, she shared her idea with her mother, “I was thinking of a box filled with holiday cards. I want to do something to make the homeless with empty hearts smile, letting them know many people still care about them.” Her mother, smiled and said, “Just do it and spread your love!”
Then Catherine launched a holiday card drive for the homeless after being inspired by volunteering at the shelter. She collected 2,000 cards, surpassing her original goal of 500 in just a few weeks.
Catherine’s compassion for others didn’t stop at just feeling sympathy for them in their hardships. She also followed her mother’s advice to look for ways to help them beat those hardships through her kindness.
So Catherine asked her online friends for holiday-themed cards, and soon, her inbox was flooded with people offering to help. Amazingly, the people she knew, the people she hadn’t spoken to since primary school, and the people she had never spoken to before, sent the cards to her. Then she asked for cards from anyone. She was not turning down any. She thought it was really great to accept them.

When I was four, my seven-year-old brother received a baseball mitt (手套) for his birthday. Every night, as we went to sleep, I’d listen to him throwing a ball into the mitt over and over to soften the leather. I wanted a mitt so much that I almost cried. But, back then, girls didn’t play sports; they played with dolls.
Fast-forward twenty-six years. Now a thirty-year-old mother of three happened to see a notice in my local paper: “Women’s Slow-Pitch Softball League opens soon. Anyone interested, sign up at the recreation center.” I cut it out and set it on the kitchen counter. Could I ? After all these years? Was it even possible to think about playing baseball, a game I’d never actually played but had dreamed of playing my entire life? And I’d certainly watched enough Chicago Cubs games to know how the game was played.
I looked at that notice on my counter every day. I thought of a thousand reasons why I couldn’t play. But the idea of playing baseball stuck in my head and wouldn’t go away. Finally, I got up my courage and signed up at the recreation center. On the way home, I bought myself a mitt.
On Monday, heart pounding, I walked through the park filled with women of all ages practicing. It took me a while to find my team. They were all high-school girls, seventeen and eighteen years old!
The coach was not at all happy to see me. He had put together top athletes for his team, and he didn’t want some old lady messing things up.
That first day, he had me run bases. What that meant was I’d stand near home plate(本垒板)while one of the girls batted, and then I’d run as hard as I could to first base, trying to get there before they threw me out. I did this over and over and over. I never got a chance to bat or play the field. I just ran bases all night. The next morning, I could barely stand.

An unlucky experience in my youth left me with an almost extreme fear of snakes. No matter how much I tried to learn about snakes, I found myself shaking with fear at so much as a photograph in a magazine or a toy snake.
Then, I became a mother. Time flew. When my son reached Cub Scout (童子军) age, I signed him up for the local pack. Within a short time, I volunteered to work as a caregiver.
A family camping trip to the local Scout campgrounds provided opportunities for the boys to learn at a variety of nature stations. I went from one post to another with the kids excitedly. All my positive feelings disappeared, however, when the staff member pointed us up the path to the next post.
“You guys are going to love the reptile (爬行动物) station,” a staff member announced.
“They’ve got a live snake you can hold.”
Live? Hold? Was he kidding? I almost turned and ran away until I remembered I was responsible for these boys. I couldn’t leave them.
The boys ran to the reptile station. I forced my feet to follow them.
The young man there went through his presentation on the importance of snakes in the environment with good humor and lots of information.
“Are you ready to meet Humphrey?” he asked.
The boys cheered. The young man carried a snake from a covered container beside the table.
He regarded Humphrey as a camp mascot (吉祥物) for a few years. As he talked about the characters of the species, he held the snake on his arm. The snake rested quietly there as the young man spoke. He explained the snake was not a threat to humans.
“Watch this,” he said, and placed the snake on the tabletop beside him. The snake stayed there quietly.
