Having won the bid for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games on July 31, 2015, Beijing is set to become the first city in the world to have hosted both the summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games.
With a vision of “Joyful Rendezvous upon Pure Ice and Snow”, Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games will build on the legacies of the landmark Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and expects to encourage millions of people across China to embrace winter sports.
The 109 events in seven Olympic winter sports will be held in the three competition zones of central Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.
Three Competition Zones
Beijing will host all the ice events (curling, ice hockey and skating) and four snow events, making full use of the legacy venues of Beijing 2008 in the spirit of Olympic Agenda 2020.
Yanqing, a suburban district of Beijing (80km to the northwest) and home to the famous Badaling and Juyongguan stretches of the Great Wall, is to host the alpine skiing and sliding events.
Zhangjiakou, further to the northwest in the neighboring Hebei province, will host all the other snow events in its Chongli district, a popular skiing destination.
Seven new events
The addition of seven new events—women’s monobob, freestyle skiing big air (men’s and women’s) and mixed team events in short track speed skating team relay, ski jumping. Freestyle skiing aerials and snowboard cross-to Beijing 2022’s sports programme will bring about the most gender-balanced Winter Olympic Games to date, with more female athletes (45.44 percent) and women’s events than at any previous Games.
Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)

For one Nebraska teen running in what would likely to be his final cross-country outing before graduating from high school, his personal best turned out not to be marking the fastest time but displaying the biggest heart.
Although it was a long shot when he came out from the starting position last Thursday, Brandon Schutt from Bellevue East High School knew if his time was good enough that day, he still had the potential to qualify for the upcoming state meet. A mile into the 3.1-mile race, however, Schutt realized he wasn’t going to be able to keep up the necessary momentum(势头). Rather than risking injury, he slowed to a comfortable pace that would allow him to simply get pleasure from the moment and the day.
Meanwhile, Blake Cerveny from Omaha Burke High School was running a very different kind of race. Aiming to beat his own personal record, after a fast start, he continued to push himself hard. With less than 400 meters to go, Cerveny’s legs cramped up (抽筋), but he didn’t give up. Cerveny rose from the ground and continued on, only to fall again after another 150 meters and again. About 100 meters away from the finish line, he lay curled on the ground. His legs had simply given out.
Before Cerveny’s dad could reach his son, Brandon Schutt was at his side to offer a helping hand. The two completed the final meters of the course. Schutt even made sure the injured runner crossed the finish line first, securing his opponent a faster time.
In today’s competitive world, while the emphasis in athletics is so often on breaking records, it is inspiring to see an athlete like Brandon Schutt.

The preparation work for Beijing Winter Olympic Games, which are expected to begin on Feb 4, 2022, has entered its final stage. In January, 2021, the ice-making work on the “Ice Ribbon”, a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.
In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by a small-time gap, tiny imperfections in the ice can make a big difference. “It’s not just a hunk of ice like you’d normally think of, like ice cubes sitting in your freezer,” told Kenneth Golden, a US mathematician who studies the structures of ice. “It’s a much more fascinating and complex substance than people would normally think.” ① ________
The first step for building any ice rink is to purify the water to remove dissolved (溶解的) solids like salts and minerals. Such impurities don’t fit in the regular hexagonal (六边形的) structure of ice that forms as water freezes. ②________ . The more pure the water is, the more consistent the ice surface.
③________. As one of the most advanced technologies for winter sports venues, a carbon dioxide (CO₂) cooling technology has been applied on a large scale for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. CO₂ is not new when it comes to ice-making. However, it has been gradually replaced by the man-made refrigerant, like Freon.
With increasing attention toward climate change, the old refrigerant has come into use again. ④ ________ . As an element of the atmosphere, CO₂ doesn’t damage the ozone layer. Although CO₂ is a greenhouse gas, its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other man-made refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO₂ instead of Freon as a refrigerant in ice-making, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
“We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way,” told Gao Bo from the Media Operations Department of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
1. What is the result of impurities in water for ice-making?A.The water isn’t able to freeze completely. | B.The quality of the ice will be affected. |

Kit McConnell, sports director of the International Olympic Committee, said the participants believe the artificial snow is outstanding. “The focus is on doing this in a sustainable way, and also ensuring the athletes have an outstanding field of play on which to compete at the Olympic level,” McConnell said.
Artificial snow gives the courses a better and more stable quality. Different from natural snow, certain qualities including particle size, the proportion of water content, and the hardness can be easily changed in creating the artificial snow, to meet the qualities and needs of different competition venues. Natural snow with a very low density cannot be used for competitions as it falls off more easily and brings safety risks.
Though the artificial snow has been used for the Beijing 2022 Olympics, a few years ago China had barely any experience in making artificial snow for the Games. Wang Feiteng, a member of the snow-making team of experts for Beijing 2022, developed a localized snow production and service technology that is suitable to China’s climate with other team members after three years of experiments. The success breaks the key snow-making technology blockade.
Following the Winter Games, artificial snow technology can also be useful. Regulating the temperature within a specific range can maintain the growth of crops in the areas where global warming has had an impact. In high-altitude areas, the application of artificial snow can not only reduce the melting process of snow, but also control water flow, preventing floods and droughts from happening.
1. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?A.Producing man-made snow. | B.Designing ski race tracks. |
C.Ensuring participants get enough training. | D.Helping athletes adapt to China’s climate. |
A.it is too heavy | B.it is hard to store |
C.it cannot keep courses safe | D.it cannot be recycled after the Games |
A.The introduction to the snow-making expert team. |
B.The key experiments made on the man-made snow. |
C.Background information about Chinese making artificial snow. |
D.Demand for qualities of artificial snow used in competitions. |
A.It can be used as agricultural water. | B.It can relieve environmental pollution. |
C.It can shorten the growing cycle of crops. | D.It can be applied to deal with climate issues. |

This year’s Winter Olympics is being held in Beijing, China, and in two areas northwest of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in the winter, but they don’t get a lot of snow. That’s because they’re not far from the Gobi Desert, and are generally very dry.
That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics there. China took water from a reservoir which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water and sent it to a nearby river. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes. China says making the snow took about 49,000 gallons of water. Outside experts say it probably took a lot more water than that.
China hired an Italian company called TechnoAlpin to create the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in this year’s Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 40 miles (64 kilometers) of pipe and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for this year’s Games took seven weeks.
In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. That’s true even in places that used to have a lot of snow naturally. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, roughly 90% of the snow was man-made. As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”
1. Why artificial snow is needed for the Winter Olympics in Beijing?A.Because it’s not cold enough in the area. |
B.Because there is little water in the air in the area. |
C.Because the world climate changes. |
D.Because the competitors perform better on artificial snow. |
A.Sending water to a river is the first step. |
B.Taking water from a reservoir is the second step. |
C.Before arriving at mountains, water is sent through pipes. |
D.By using pipes, water won’t be wasted. |
A.The places that have much natural snow don’t need artificial snow. |
B.With proper preparing work, it doesn’t take much time to make artificial snow. |
C.TechnoAlpin has lots of experience to make artificial snow. |
D.Experts have calculated the exact amount of water needed to make artificial snow. |
A.Opposed. | B.Unconcerned. | C.Enthusiastic. | D.Objective. |
