I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B. informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Missy was one of my friends. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously expected the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called.“So I’m in group tree,” I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird (怪异的) clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.

I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B. She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why?” I started.

She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this task. Only you can help them.”

When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.

The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word “stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.

In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.

One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.

Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class’s reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.

A Beautiful Group Painting

The art class was over in a blink of an eye. When the recess bell (下课铃) rang, Lisa sighed. At her old school, she used to play with her friends. Now she sat in the corner of the field and watched the other kids play without her.

As she cleared her table, Lisa noticed a box of chalk by the window. She put it in her pockets. Then she took her usual place at the end of the recess line.

As she and her classmates walked down the hall and out into the yard, Lisa remembered how she and her mother used to draw chalk designs on the long driveway leading to the old apartment. The patterns were called rangoli (印度传统地画), and they looked like stars and roses. Lisa’s mother said that the drawings were to welcome guests to their home. Lisa missed the early mornings she and her mother would spend drawing those colorful patterns.

Lisa walked to the basketball court and sat on the sidewalk. She took chalk out of her pocket and began to draw her favorite rangoli pattern. She drew flowers with huge petals (花瓣) and stars with eight points.

“That’s pretty,” a voice said. She turned around and saw that Eric, a boy in her class, was watching her.

“It’s called rangoli,” she said.

“The floor of my grandmother’s house has patterns like that,” Eric said.

“What do you mean?” Lisa asked. “Hand me a piece of chalk,” Eric said. Eric sat down on the pavement and began to draw. He drew flowers that were more detailed than Lisa’s, but still had huge petals. Then he drew circles inside circles, and surrounded them with small diamonds. Lisa kept drawing too.

“What are you guys doing?” a voice asked. Lisa and Eric had been so absorbed in drawing that they hadn’t noticed that their classmate Emma had been watching them.

“Hey,” Emma said, sitting down beside them, “that looks like the rugs (小地毯) in my uncle’s house. Except on the rugs, the shapes are bigger, and aren’t as curly (卷曲的).”
