The first time we set eyes on "Big Red", Dad, Mom and I were walking through the freshly fallen snow on our way to Hubble's Hardware store on Main Street in Huntsville. As we passed the Eaton’s department store's window, we stopped as usual to gaze and do a bit of dreaming. The beautifully decorated window display held the best goods ever, which were all sat comfortably beneath the breathtaking skirt of Big Red.

Mom's eyes were glued to the red shining dress, dotted with twinkling stars. "My goodness," she managed to say in wonder. "Would you just look at that dress!" Then, totally out of character. Mom gave a spin of a waltz on the slippery sidewalk. But soon she was her usual self again and shook her head in disgust. "Who on earth would want such a fancy dress?"

As we continued down the street. Mom turned back for one more look. "My goodness! You'd think they'd display something a person could use!"

Christmas was nearing, and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mom, of all people, was not one to wish for, or spend money on, items that were not practical. Dad, on the other hand, liked to indulge (纵容) whenever the budget allowed. Of course, he'd get a scolding for his occasional splurging (挥霍),but it was all done with the best intention.

There were many other modern things that old farm needed, like electric range and a clothes dryer, but Mom insisted that those things would have to wait until we could afford them. She had worn the heavy, grey wool coat every winter for as long as I could remember though she did have one or two "special" dresses saved for church on Sundays.

Choosing something for Mom was much harder. When Dad and I asked, she thought carefully and then hinted modestly for some tea towels, face cloths or a new dishpan (洗碗盆).

On our last trip to town before Christmas, we were driving up Main Street when Mom suddenly exclaimed in surprise: "Would you just look at that!" She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton's.

“I’m not putting up a Christmas tree this year. I just don’t have the spirit,” my husband Bill’s mom said sadly over the phone.

My husband’s parents used to have a big Christmas. There were many lights in their yard, decorations hanging from the ceiling, a big well-decorated, freshly cut tree, etc. It was amazing.

But this year would be different. With Bill’s dad passing late that November, it was understandable that his mom’s holiday spirit was nonexistent. Christmas decorating had been something husband and wife had undertaken together for over fifty years, and she simply would not do it alone.

Still, it was heartbreaking to think that not even a tree would decorate their home this year. Phone calls were made to Mom and conversations were made with her children and grandchildren in order to try to bring back her holiday spirit. Yet, it was no use.

That season, every Christmas song I heard in the stores only made me sadder as I thought of the barren (荒芜的) spot in Mom’s heart. There had to be something that could be done to bring some joy back into her life.

One afternoon, while passing a discount store, I saw many fresh green tabletop trees. They were so beautiful. Then I got an idea. I walked into the store, and selected a multi-colored string of lights and many other decorations I could find. Then I grabbed the largest tree, paid for all the things and walked home with four bags in one hand and a tree in the other.

I couldn’t imagine what I looked like, out in the cold, carrying a tree for half a mile. I only knew I felt a boost in my own heart — a boost I hoped Mom would also feel when I delivered the tree to her. And I wanted her to know that if Dad had still been alive, he would have wished her to be happy. If he had seen her unhappy, he would have been sad.

When I got home, Bill saw the tree. I told him that I would give it to Mom.

When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate(幸运的) than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three- year-old Meghan.

These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.”

I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate(捐赠) some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed.

Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved doll, hugged tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.

“Oh, Honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”

Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”

Last week, I was creating a picture book for my dad as his birthday gift. It was about our family’s grocery store (杂货店). There were lots of fruits in the store, so my pictures centered on apples, pears, grapes and any other fruit one could think of. I worked forever making each picture as perfect as possible. Every time I messed up, I started all over again, so the floor under the kitchen table was covered with half-finished drawings.

“Dad’s going to love this,” my mom said as she looked over my shoulder, “but it’s housework time now.” I was responsible for folding the clothes, and my little brother Ben, sweeping the floor. “And Amy, please remove the paper from the floor to the recycling bin in the yard when you finish your project,” my mom added.

I finished folding the clothes as fast as possible. Just as I was about to get back to the picture book, my friend Marry showed up.

“Hi, Amy! Want to go and play in the park?” she asked.

“I definitely would, but brrr…It’s freezing cold outside!”

“Exactly!” she said. “It’s the perfect weather for not getting overheated.”

That’s a cool thing about Marry. She has this way of looking on the bright side of pretty much anything.

So, we headed to the park. But as soon as we arrived there, the sky was filled with giant gray clouds and rain started pouring down. We had to go back, dripping wet.

Ben was taking out rubbish to the recycling bin when we stepped into the yard. And that’s when my heart pretty much stopped. Right there in the yard, in front of the recycling bin, was a box full of wet paper. And not just any piece of paper. That was my picture book.
